Android night photos look blurry or grainy because the camera receives far less light than it does in daylight. To make a usable image, the phone may lengthen the exposure, capture a burst of frames, raise sensor gain, and combine the results with computational processing. Any movement during that process can smear the whole scene; movement by a person or animal can blur only the subject. Brightening a very dark capture also makes noise—visible grain—more obvious.
Start with the phone’s built-in night mode, keep the device still until processing finishes, add light when possible, and inspect the lens and focus. Low-light softness alone does not prove that the camera is defective.

What the camera is trying to do in the dark
A camera sensor records individual photons. In a dim scene, fewer photons reach each pixel during the available capture time, so the unprocessed image is dark and contains less reliable detail. The camera has three broad ways to compensate:
- Longer exposure: the shutter stays open longer, collecting more light but making hand movement and subject movement more visible.
- Higher gain (ISO): the camera amplifies the signal, which lifts detail and also amplifies random electronic variation that appears as grain.
- Multi-frame processing: the phone captures several images, aligns them, combines useful information, and applies noise reduction and sharpening.
Google describes the limitation plainly: “Low lighting can cause photos to look dark, grainy, or blurry.” See Google’s Pixel photo-quality guidance. This is a normal low-light constraint, although a camera that is consistently poor in bright daylight needs separate troubleshooting.

Why night mode can look blurry
Camera movement smears the entire frame
Still-photo night modes commonly use a burst rather than one instantaneous exposure. Android Developers says the night mode camera extension captures a burst, combines the frames, and processes the result to recover more detail; its guidance is at Choose the best low-light option. If the phone shifts while those frames are being captured, stationary edges can appear doubled, streaked, or generally soft.
The preview may look sharper or darker than the final photo because the preview is real-time, while the finished image is assembled after capture. Pixel instructions therefore ask users to hold still for a few seconds. A small movement while pressing the shutter, or touching the phone before processing ends, can be enough to reduce sharpness.
Subject movement is a different problem
A person walking, a child turning their head, a pet moving, or leaves blowing in the wind can remain blurred even when the phone is mounted on a tripod. If the background and fixed edges are sharp but the moving subject is smeared, subject movement is the more likely cause. A stable support prevents camera shake; it cannot freeze motion inside the scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReal-time low-light modes trade quality for speed
Android also supports a low-light boost option intended for real-time viewing or faster capture. Android Developers notes that low-light boost can show more motion blur and artifacts than the still-photo night mode extension. The exact behavior depends on the device and camera app, but the trade-off is consistent: less delay generally means less opportunity to collect and merge light.
Why night photos look grainy
Noise is strongest where the signal is weakest
Dark parts of a low-light image contain fewer captured photons, so random variation is a larger fraction of the signal. Raising exposure or brightening the image makes both detail and that variation more visible. Fine speckles, colored flecks, or mottled shadows are the result.
Google’s original Night Sight explanation gives historical context: single-image smartphone cameras “begin to struggle at 30 lux,” while merged captures can perform down to about 3 lux, with the original project targeting scenes between 3 and 0.3 lux. Those 2018 figures describe that research and its implementation, not a universal threshold for every current Android phone. Read the explanation at Google Research’s Night Sight article.

The same guidance recommends reducing exposure and brightening later when necessary because that approach can produce less noise than making the capture excessively bright in camera. It is a practical principle, not a guarantee for every sensor or app.
How Android night modes build the final image
Night mode may take a sequence of short or long exposures, align them, reject frames or regions that do not match, and merge the remaining information. It then applies tone mapping, noise reduction, color correction, and sharpening. Samsung’s US support page describes Galaxy Night mode as combining 30 images into one photo; that is Samsung’s description for supported Galaxy software, not a frame count shared by all Android phones. Samsung also states that Night mode availability varies by model and software version: Galaxy night photography instructions.
Frame merging works best when the scene is stable. Algorithms can align a stationary building or a night sky, but they have less consistent information when a person crosses the frame between captures. The result may contain ghosting, a smeared subject, repeated edges, or processing artifacts even when the phone itself did not move.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
| Walls, signs, and other fixed edges smear across the image | Phone movement during a long or multi-frame capture | Brace the phone, use a stable surface or tripod, and do not touch it until processing finishes |
| Background is sharp but a person, pet, or vehicle is blurred | Subject movement | Add light, ask the subject to pause, or use a quicker ordinary-photo capture |
| Fine speckles or colored noise mainly in shadows | Insufficient light and amplified sensor noise | Add available light, avoid excessive digital brightening, and accept that detail may be limited |
| Haze, streaks, halos, or flare around lights | Fingerprints, dust, a lens protector, condensation, or scratched cover glass | Clean the camera glass and test without interfering protective gear |
| Everything is soft, including daylight photos | Focus, cover, condensation, or hardware issue rather than night mode alone | Check focus, remove the cover, compare lighting, and inspect for damage |
Step-by-step fixes for blurry or grainy night photos
1. Turn on the phone’s built-in night mode
Use the mode supplied for your particular model rather than assuming every Android camera has the same controls.
- Pixel: Night Sight can activate automatically in Photo or Portrait mode when the scene is dark, and it can also be selected directly. Follow Google’s Pixel low-light instructions.
- Galaxy: Samsung’s current US path is Camera > More > Night. The option and menu layout vary by model and software version.
- Other Android phones: look for Night, Night Sight, Moon, or a similar low-light mode in the camera mode selector. Names and capabilities are manufacturer-specific.
After pressing the shutter, keep the phone in the same position until the capture and processing indicator ends.

2. Stabilize the phone completely
For a stationary street, building, landscape, or night-sky scene, rest the phone on a solid surface or use a phone mount or tripod. Avoid holding it at arm’s length. A timer can prevent the tap on the shutter from shaking the phone. Pixel’s guidance recommends a stand, tripod, or stable surface for astrophotography and low-light scenes; see the same support page.

Stabilization is only a camera-motion solution. It will not make a moving person sharp during a multi-frame exposure.
3. Add light before raising brightness later
Turn on a nearby lamp, move toward a lit area, open a curtain, or reposition the subject near existing light. Even a modest increase can give autofocus and the sensor more information. Avoid pointing directly at a bright lamp if it causes flare; use the light to illuminate the subject from an angle instead.
4. Decide between night mode, flash, and a quicker capture
For a stationary scene, night mode generally gives the camera time to gather and merge more light. For a moving subject, compare the phone’s ordinary Photo mode with flash on and off. Google recommends this comparison when diagnosing quality problems. Flash can freeze a nearby subject but may produce harsh shadows, reflections, or an unnatural background; the result depends on the phone and distance.

Android’s low-light boost may reduce waiting, but Android Developers warns that it can introduce more artifacts and motion blur than still-photo night mode.
5. Clean the camera glass
Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Fingerprints and dust scatter point lights, creating streaks and halos that can be mistaken for sensor noise. Do not use abrasive material or liquid directly on the camera opening.
Inspect the lens protector, case opening, and camera glass. Google advises checking for dirt, scratches, cracks, condensation, and protective accessories. Samsung likewise notes that a lens protector can cause focus problems or distortion and that smudges make glare more noticeable. Samsung’s maintenance guidance is at its Galaxy photo and video quality page.

6. Set focus deliberately
Tap the main subject in the viewfinder before taking the picture. In very dim scenes, autofocus may have too little contrast to lock reliably. Google’s original Night Sight discussion reported autofocus beginning to fail below 0.3 lux on that original Pixel implementation; do not treat 0.3 lux as a specification for every modern Android phone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A lens cover, condensation, or scratched glass can also prevent reliable focus.
7. Test the camera in daylight
Take several ordinary photos outdoors or in a bright room. If daylight images are sharp but night images are not, the limitation is likely the available light, movement, or the phone’s night-mode processing. If daylight images are also blurry, remove any lens cover or protector, clean the glass, tap to focus, and compare another angle and lighting condition.
Persistent haze, distortion, visible cracks, internal condensation, or failure to focus after those checks points to a physical or software problem that needs manufacturer support rather than another night-mode setting.

Stationary buildings and landscapes
Use night mode and a stable support. Frame the shot, start a timer if available, tap to focus, and do not touch the phone during capture. Keep bright signs or lamps out of the lens path if they create flare.
People at night
Give the subject more light and ask them to pause briefly. Try flash on and off, then compare with ordinary Photo mode if night mode creates ghosting. A tripod helps only with your hands, not with a moving subject.

Pets, children, and sports
Prioritize shutter speed over maximum brightness. Use available light, move closer to it, and take several quicker frames. A darker but sharp photo can be more useful than a bright multi-frame image with a blurred subject.
Stars and night skies
Use the phone’s supported astrophotography or night-sky setting, place it on a stable surface or tripod, and avoid touching it during the exposure. Clouds, moving branches, aircraft, and light pollution can still limit the result even when the phone is perfectly stable.
When the problem is not simply “low light”
Do not attribute every poor photo to darkness. A dirty or scratched lens, a poorly fitted protector, condensation, an obstructed camera opening, or a focus fault can affect images in every lighting condition. Compare the same camera in daylight, with and without the accessory, and after cleaning. Check more than one camera if the phone has multiple lenses; a problem isolated to one lens is useful information for support.

Also distinguish the preview from the saved image. A preview may be noisy and dark because it must update immediately, while the saved night-mode photo may be brighter after processing. Conversely, a saved image that is consistently smeared despite a stable phone and stationary subject suggests a focus, lens, or processing issue worth escalating.
Bottom line
Android night photos become blurry when the phone or subject moves during the longer, multi-frame capture required in low light. They become grainy when the sensor has too little signal and the camera amplifies or brightens it. Use the correct night mode, hold the phone still until processing ends, add light for moving subjects, clean the lens, and check focus and accessories. If the same blur appears in daylight, investigate the lens, cover, condensation, or hardware instead of treating it as an unavoidable night-photo effect.
