If dishes still feel greasy after a dishwasher cycle, the wash may not be getting enough hot water, the spray may not be reaching the surfaces, or the filter, spray arms, detergent, or cycle choice may be working against a clean result. Start by checking loading and spray access, then confirm the hot-water supply and clean the parts your model’s manual says to maintain.
Why do my dishes still feel greasy after a dishwasher cycle?
Dishwashers need hot water, effective detergent, and unobstructed water circulation. A problem in any of these areas can leave food soil behind. Greasy feel alone does not identify a specific fault: residue might be oily food, visible suds, detergent left behind, or a non-greasy film such as hard-water deposits. Whirlpool discusses spots and film as possible cleaning symptoms, but they should not automatically be diagnosed as grease. Whirlpool’s cleaning guidance covers several of these possibilities.

Water may be too cool
Hot water helps dissolve grease and activate dishwasher detergent. Whirlpool says its dishwashers perform best with incoming water at 120°F (49°C); that is Whirlpool guidance, not a universal specification for every brand or model. Check your dishwasher’s manual for its requirements and confirm that the hot-water supply and shutoff valve are set up correctly. Water may not be reaching the dishes
Overloading, nested dishes, or a large item blocking a spray arm can prevent water from reaching soiled surfaces. A spray arm that cannot turn freely or has clogged openings can also reduce coverage. The filter, cycle, or detergent may be a poor match
A clogged filter or spray-arm openings can interfere with cleaning. A cycle that is too light for a heavily soiled load, stale detergent, the wrong detergent, or too much detergent can also contribute. Use only detergent made for automatic dishwashers and follow its package directions; hand dish soap can create excess suds and impair washing. Rinse aid mainly supports drying and helps reduce spots or filming—it is not the primary fix for oily food residue.
How to fix greasy dishes coming out of the dishwasher
Work through these checks before buying parts. Follow the owner’s manual whenever it gives model-specific instructions, especially for filter removal, spray-arm cleaning, cycle settings, and water temperature.

- Scrape off large scraps. Remove large food pieces before loading, but do not assume every dish needs thorough pre-rinsing. Bosch notes that small food debris can help detergent work.
- Reload for open spray access. Leave space between dishes, avoid nesting, and point dirty surfaces toward the spray. Keep tall cookware from blocking spray arms. Before starting a cycle, check that the arms can rotate freely.
- Choose a cycle suited to the soil. For heavily soiled loads, use a cycle appropriate to that soil level. If your model offers a high-temperature option, consult its manual to see when to use it.
- Confirm the hot-water supply. Check that the dishwasher’s hot-water line and supply valve are in order. Use your model’s manual for the target temperature and any recommended settings; Whirlpool’s 120°F (49°C) recommendation applies to its own dishwasher guidance, not every machine.
- Clean the filter and inspect spray arms. Remove and clean the filter only as directed in your manual. Check spray-arm holes for debris and clear them using the method the manufacturer recommends. Filter designs and removal steps vary by model.
- Use fresh, correctly measured detergent. Use automatic-dishwasher detergent, follow the package directions, and keep it closed in a cool, dry place. Avoid adding extra detergent in an attempt to compensate for poor cleaning.
When to call for service
If dishes remain greasy after you have corrected loading, cleaned the filter and spray-arm openings as directed, used appropriate detergent, and confirmed the water supply, contact the dishwasher manufacturer or a qualified appliance technician. Whirlpool lists heating-element or sensor problems among possible reasons water may remain too cool, but greasy dishes alone do not establish that a particular part has failed. A technician can diagnose a persistent temperature or cleaning problem for your model.

What not to treat as the main fix
- Rinse aid: It is primarily for drying and reducing spots or filming, not for correcting poor grease removal.
- A dishwasher cleaner tablet: A cleaning product may help with interior maintenance, but it cannot correct cool incoming water, blocked spray, crowded loading, unsuitable detergent, or a failed component. Whirlpool recommends dishwasher-cleaning products for interior cleaning; use one according to its label and your manual.
- More detergent: Too much or the wrong type can create excess suds and poor wash performance rather than solve the problem.
