If they fail everywhere, check the connection and your computer or phone’s audio route. On Windows, whether the headphones appear in Sound settings helps distinguish a routing problem from a device-detection or driver problem.
First, find out whether the problem is Discord or the headphones
- Play audio in another app. Use the same headphones to test a video, music, or system sound. If they work there, focus on Discord’s output selection, volume, and voice settings. If they fail in other apps too, check the connection and the operating system’s output settings.
- Check whether your device detects the headphones. On Windows, open Settings > System > Sound and look under Output. If the headphones are listed, select them and check their volume. If they are missing, move to the Windows detection steps below.
- Identify your setup. The next steps vary by desktop app, browser, or mobile, and by connection type. Make sure a USB plug or 3.5 mm jack is firmly seated; for wireless headphones, confirm they are connected to the device you are using.
Check Discord’s output device and volume
Desktop app or browser
Open Discord’s User Settings > Voice & Video. Under the output-device control, choose the headphones you intend to use, then check the output volume. A device selected in Discord may differ from the one selected by Windows, so verify both routes.

If you use a USB headset, try another USB port. If the connection and selected output are correct but Discord still has no sound, use Discord’s Voice & Video reset option. Discord also lists switching between the Standard and Legacy audio subsystems as an advanced troubleshooting step for persistent desktop or browser problems; try this only after checking the device and volume.
Use the mic test to check the selected output
Discord’s Mic Testing tool plays a recording back through the selected output. If you can hear that playback, it helps confirm that the selected output works while you diagnose microphone input. It does not replace testing ordinary audio in another app.

Check Windows sound settings
In Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > System > Sound, select the headphones under Output, and make sure they are not muted. Raise the system volume as well as Discord’s volume.
If several playback devices are available, open More sound settings (or the Sound Control Panel) and set the intended headphones as the default playback device. If audio still fails, Microsoft recommends disabling audio enhancements, which can interfere with playback.

If Windows does not detect the headphones
A device missing from Windows Sound settings points to a detection or driver issue, not necessarily a Discord fault. Microsoft lists missing, outdated, disabled, or incorrectly loading drivers among possible causes.

If it is absent, use Device Manager’s option to show hidden devices, then scan for hardware changes.
- Install the latest audio driver from your PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site. Avoid driver downloads from unverified third-party sites.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter and restart the computer.
Fix Discord audio on a phone
In the Discord mobile app, open User Settings > Voice, check the output selection and volume, and test the relevant voice options. On iOS, Discord’s guidance says you may need to choose an external call-audio output through AirPlay rather than speakerphone.

Mac users with a USB audio interface
Discord’s guidance on macOS audio interfaces says that professional USB audio interfaces are not officially supported for voice chat in the guidance it provides, and recommends a traditional headset or microphone for more consistent performance. This caveat applies to audio interfaces; it does not mean ordinary Mac headphones are unsupported.

If you have checked the connection, Discord’s output and volume, and the operating system’s audio route without fixing the problem, follow Discord’s troubleshooting guide. Be ready to provide your client and platform details, device list, and the screenshots or debug information the guide requests.

Consider replacing the headset only if it also fails outside Discord or another test isolates it as faulty. The troubleshooting steps do not establish that a particular headset model or connection type is a universal fix.
