Golden State Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase went down near the bench late in the team’s October 2, 2026 playoff game against Dallas. She was helped up by athletic trainer Katelin Knox and finished the game. Afterward, assistant coach Kasib Powell said Nakase was fine and expected to coach again Sunday. No diagnosis or definitive cause has been established in the available reporting.

What happened to Natalie Nakase?

With 1:40 remaining in Game 3 of the Valkyries’ first-round series against the Dallas Wings, Nakase went down to her knees near the bench, with her head and hands on the court. Athletic trainer Katelin Knox helped her up. Nakase stayed through the end of the game and left the floor with a staff member after the final buzzer rather than joining the team’s midcourt celebration. The Associated Press reported that Golden State won 77–73 to clinch the series.

Hindustan Times reported that Nakase had been speaking with officials about a no-call after a Gabby Williams layup shortly before she went down. Its account also relayed ESPN play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco’s live description of an “episode” and his question about whether she may have slipped. Those observations do not establish that she fainted or explain why she went down.

Is Natalie Nakase okay?

After the game, assistant coach Kasib Powell told reporters that Nakase was talking and laughing in the back and said the team expected her to coach Sunday. Powell said: “Natalie’s fine, obviously it’s a quick turnaround, we play again on Sunday. She wouldn’t miss it for anything.” Guard Gabby Williams also said, “She’s OK, she’s fine.” These were immediate postgame reassurances, not a medical report.

Why did Nakase go down? Was it fainting?

Hindustan Times relayed ESPN reporter Kendra Andrews’s report that Nakase was exhausted and felt lightheaded during the game. That is the explanation reported in that account, but it does not amount to a diagnosis. The reviewed coverage does not establish that Nakase fainted or confirm a cause such as dehydration, heat, or stress. Calling the incident a faint as a settled fact would go beyond what has been reported.

Will Nakase coach the next game?

Powell said the team expected Nakase to coach Sunday, October 4, when Golden State was scheduled to host the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals. That was the team’s postgame expectation; check for a later team update for confirmed availability.
