A rebasing token’s displayed amount can change without a transfer, while a bridge or cross-chain swap can separately fail to support that token’s accounting. Check the token contract and balance on the correct network first; before swapping, confirm that the exact route supports the asset and the representation you expect to receive.
Why did my token balance change after a rebase?
Rebasing tokens use contract code to adjust supply, which can change the number of tokens attributed to a wallet without an ordinary transfer. A wallet may not immediately show the updated amount: some rebasing contracts do not emit the events wallets use to track balance changes. Uniswap Labs recommends checking the token balance on a blockchain explorer. Uniswap Labs explains rebasing token balance changes.

- Confirm that your wallet is connected to the network where you hold the token.
- Find the token’s contract address from a trusted source, then inspect that contract and your address on a block explorer for the same network.
- Compare the on-chain balance with the wallet display. If they differ, the wallet may not be displaying the token correctly; do not infer that a rebase explains every discrepancy.
A transfer, a different network, an unsupported token, or a display problem can also explain a mismatch. The explorer check establishes the on-chain balance for the selected contract and network; it does not by itself establish whether a particular bridge or swap supports the token.

Only if the specific route supports that asset and accounts for how its balance changes. A cross-chain system must determine what is debited on the source chain and what is credited on the destination. Ordinary debit-and-credit logic assumes the amount sent equals the amount received, an assumption that can break for rebasing tokens unless an integration reconciles actual balance changes. LayerZero describes this accounting issue in its cross-chain token standards documentation.

Support is route-specific, not a blanket yes or no. Gnosis Chain’s OmniBridge documentation, for example, says bridge operations are disabled for rebasing tokens because a balance reduction could leave users unable to exit. That restriction does not establish that every bridge rejects every rebasing asset. Check the protocol’s documentation and interface for the exact token, source and destination chains, and route.
How is a cross-chain swap different from providing liquidity?
A cross-chain swap combines moving value between chains with an exchange along the route. Providing liquidity to a decentralized exchange is a separate activity with different exposure. Documentation for two versions of Uniswap describes rebasing-related risks in its liquidity accounting:

- Uniswap v2: a negative rebase can cause reserve drift and shift losses to the next account that transacts; a positive rebase can leave surplus tokens outside reserve accounting. See Uniswap v2’s common errors documentation.
- Uniswap v3: liquidity providers can bear the loss from a negative rebase while their position is active. See Uniswap v3’s documentation.
These are version-specific explanations of liquidity risks, not proof that every DEX behaves the same way. They also do not mean that swapping and supplying liquidity have identical risks.

stETH is a specific example of a rebasing asset; do not assume another rebasing token has an equivalent wrapper. Lido describes wstETH as an ERC-20 wrapper whose token count stays stable while its value in stETH changes. It represents the holder’s share of stETH supply, so the amount of stETH represented by a given wstETH balance can accrue over time. Lido explains that this format can help with integrations that do not support rebasing tokens, including some cross-chain uses. See Lido’s wstETH documentation.

That does not make wstETH a universal bridge solution. Lido’s cross-chain adoption guide cautions that technically bridging stETH or wstETH as a standard, non-upgradable ERC-20 may not fit its long-term interoperability approach or support stETH’s rebasing nature. Before using a wrapper, verify the exact wstETH contract representation on both chains and that the selected bridge or swap route supports it. See Lido’s cross-chain adoption guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check before confirming an omnichain swap?
- Source asset: verify the token name and contract address on the source network. A matching ticker alone is not enough to identify a token.
- Route support: establish whether the route accepts the rebasing token itself or requires a supported non-rebasing representation.
- Destination: check the destination network and the exact token representation you expect to receive.
- Quote: review the estimated output, bridge and network fees, and any route minimum shown in the interface. Quotes and route availability can change.
- Receiving wallet: confirm it supports the destination network and token.
Product details are not interchangeable across providers. Uniswap says its cross-chain swaps combine bridging and swapping and currently use Across with Uniswap routing; its support page says fees appear in the quote and timing depends on the networks and current conditions. See Uniswap’s cross-chain swap guide. Stargate V2 describes same-asset bridging and offers “taxi” immediate messaging or “bus” batching, in which destination receipt may take longer. See Stargate V2’s transfer documentation. These descriptions do not establish support for your token; confirm that separately in the route you plan to use.

What if the swap completed but the token is not visible?
Check the destination network selected in your wallet, then verify the transaction and token balance on that network’s block explorer. The wallet may not support or automatically display the received token. Follow the specific protocol’s transaction-status and support guidance before taking another action. Uniswap’s troubleshooting page recommends manual bridging and swapping only when needed; do not resubmit blindly. See Uniswap’s cross-chain swap troubleshooting guide.
