A PlayStation that switches off on its own usually falls into one of a few groups: it entered rest mode because it was idle, it overheated, a power or cable connection was interrupted, or a software or hardware fault forced it off. The indicator light and the timing of the shutdown are the fastest way to tell these apart. PlayStation’s official guidance does not identify the cause for any individual console, so the checks below help you narrow the problem rather than diagnose it.
First, confirm whether the console actually powered off
Rest mode is an automatic power state, and it is the most common innocent explanation. On PS5, the setting is called “Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.” On PS4, the equivalent is “Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off.” Both are found in the power-saving settings described on PlayStation’s power-saving settings page. If the console went quiet after a period of inactivity, check these timers first.

A rest-mode timer is unlikely to explain a shutdown that happens in the middle of active play. In that case, the symptom categories below are more useful.

PlayStation’s PS5 power troubleshooting guide separates power problems into distinct patterns. Identifying which one you have determines which official path to follow.
Power loss shortly after startup
The console turns on, then loses power within a short time. This pattern points to the PS5 power guide’s dedicated path for this symptom rather than to a single cause.
Failure to turn on
The console does not start at all. Note whether the indicator changes when you press the power button, since that detail narrows the next step.

Crashing or freezing during play
The game or system stops responding before the console shuts off. A freeze followed by a shutdown is a different pattern from a sudden power-off with no warning, and PlayStation’s guide treats them separately.
Shutting off during play
The console powers down while a game is running. Because this happens during use, a rest-mode timer is an unlikely explanation, and the heat and cable checks below deserve attention.
Check heat and airflow
PlayStation’s indicator guidance identifies pulsing red on PS4 as overheating. The same advice appears on its PlayStation Japan power troubleshooting page for PS4, which is written in Japanese. Work through these steps in order:

- Turn the console off and let it cool before restarting it.
- Move it to a well-ventilated place, away from enclosed cabinets and soft surfaces that block airflow.
- Check the vents for dust or obstruction, and clear any blockage you find.
If shutdowns continue after the console has cooled and airflow is clear, heat is less likely to be the sole cause. Note the room temperature and whether the shutdowns cluster during long sessions, since that pattern is useful if you escalate later.
Test the cables, then power-cycle the console
PlayStation’s Safe Mode troubleshooting page is written for a console that will not launch Safe Mode. It says the USB, HDMI, or power cable may be the problem, and it recommends trying a different cable and checking Safe Mode after each change. Use this as a practical swap test. A cable that changes the result is worth replacing, but a swap that makes no difference does not rule out a power problem.
The same page describes a power-cycle procedure: turn the console off, remove the power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again. Use this only after the console has fully shut down, and follow the data protection steps described later in this article.

If you buy a replacement power cable, confirm the exact console model and connector type first. A cable that fits the socket but not the console will not help.

PlayStation’s power-saving guidance warns against disconnecting the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking. The company says this may cause data loss, corruption, or damage to the console. Wait until the indicator has gone dark before unplugging anything.

If the shutdowns continue after the steps above, PlayStation directs PS5 users with power symptoms to its Repairs diagnostic tool. The tool provides troubleshooting steps and lets you check repair eligibility. Eligibility is not guaranteed, and the outcome depends on the console and your region.
Before you contact official support, write down the following so the process moves faster:
- Your console model (PS5 or PS4 and its variant)
- Which symptom category matches the shutdown, and when it happens
- What the indicator did before the shutdown
- Any message shown at the next startup
- Whether the shutdown repeats after the airflow and cable checks
What the official guidance cannot establish
- It does not rank the causes by how often they occur.
- It cannot identify a failed internal component without diagnosis of the specific console.
- It does not confirm whether a particular console can be repaired at home, which depends on the model and region.
The checks in this article are the official first steps that apply across these symptoms. Where a shutdown continues after them, the console needs diagnosis through PlayStation’s support channels.
