A single canyon may include rocky walls, ledges, soft sediment and coral patches, each suited to different organisms. But canyons are not all alike: how much life they support depends on local depth, geology, water movement and food supply.
What makes a submarine canyon different from the surrounding seafloor?
A submarine canyon is a steep incision in a continental margin. Its defining ecological feature is not simply that it is deep, but that its slopes, walls and floor create a varied landscape within a relatively confined area. Instead of one uniform stretch of seabed, a canyon may contain cliffs, ridges, ledges, rock outcrops, boulders and patches of softer sediment.

Those surfaces offer different living conditions. A coral or sponge needs a firm place to attach, while animals living in or on soft sediment use a different kind of habitat. Changes in depth and terrain also create nearby niches with differing physical conditions. As a result, different communities can occupy adjacent parts of the same canyon rather than every organism being spread evenly across it.

NOAA Ocean Exploration describes Atlantic-margin canyon habitats that include cliff walls, rocks and boulders, deep-sea corals, chemosynthetic ecosystems and soft sediments. That list illustrates the range of settings that can occur in canyon systems; it is not a checklist for every canyon worldwide. The key idea is that a canyon is a bundle of habitats, not one habitat with one characteristic community.

How does canyon terrain affect currents and food?
Steep relief interacts with moving water. Tides, internal waves and other currents flow through or along canyon terrain; their effects depend on the shape of the canyon and local ocean conditions. The resulting movement can shift sediment and organic material, carry suspended particles past animals, and resuspend material from the seabed.
That matters to suspension feeders, organisms that obtain food from particles carried in the water. NOAA Ocean Exploration notes that swift currents along steep canyon walls can move and resuspend sediment, making suspended food available to deep-sea corals and other suspension feeders. Rocky ledges can provide these animals with attachment surfaces, while the water flowing past can deliver particles. The physical habitat and the food supply therefore work together: a hard surface can offer a place to live, and moving water can bring material within reach.
Currents also transport material through a canyon rather than only feeding animals in place. A 2017 review by Fernandez-Arcaya and colleagues describes canyon hydrodynamics as enhancing the down-canyon transport of litter. That is a reminder that transport pathways do not distinguish between useful organic matter and unwanted material. What moves through a canyon depends on what enters it and on the currents that carry it.

In some settings, currents interacting with steep canyon relief can form eddies and drive upwelling: the upward movement of deeper, nutrient-rich water. NOAA Fisheries describes nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates being lifted toward sunlit waters in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts region. There, nutrients can support phytoplankton, which are eaten by zooplankton; those small consumers can in turn support fish and larger predators.

This is one way canyon oceanography can connect deep water to food webs higher in the water column. It is not the same process as particles feeding corals on a canyon wall. Suspended particles can supply food directly to some seafloor animals, whereas upwelling can bring nutrients into sunlit waters and support plankton-based food webs. Both mechanisms may matter in a region, but which one is important depends on local conditions.
Upwelling is not an automatic property of every canyon. It depends on how currents meet the local terrain and on the surrounding oceanography. A canyon can still have varied benthic habitats and active particle transport without producing the same upwelling effect described for a particular regional setting.
What kinds of life have been observed in canyon habitats?
On hard substrates along the Atlantic margin, NOAA Ocean Exploration describes stony corals including Lophelia pertusa, Solenosmilia variabilis and cup corals in the genus Desmophyllum, as well as octocorals and black corals. These are regional observations, not a universal species list. Corals and sponges can use rock and ledges as attachment sites, while soft-sediment areas provide a different habitat for other invertebrates.

NOAA Fisheries names corals, sponges, invertebrates, squid, octopus, skates, flounders and crabs in Oceanographer, Gilbert and Lydonia canyons in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts area. These examples include animals living on or near the seafloor as well as mobile animals using the canyon waters. Whales and other wide-ranging animals use the broader region, but their presence should not be confused with the community attached to a canyon wall.

The contrast matters because “canyon life” can refer to more than one ecological setting. A coral growing on a rocky wall, an animal living in sediment, and a mobile predator passing through the water are connected to the canyon in different ways. Describing them separately helps explain why the animals recorded at a site may reflect both its seafloor habitats and its role in a wider food web.
Are submarine canyons always more diverse than nearby slopes?
No general rule says that every canyon contains more species or more animals than its neighboring slope. Canyon shape, depth, substrate, water movement and organic-matter supply vary from place to place, so the biological outcome varies too. Some canyon locations may have locally high abundance or diversity, while other comparisons may show a different pattern.
NOAA’s account of exploration off the northeastern United States says canyons may have higher biomass and biodiversity than adjacent slope areas. The qualified wording is important: it describes a possibility for some canyons, not a universal result. The same 2013 account reported organic matter and nutrient-rich sediments concentrated in canyon areas, strong currents exposing hard substrate, and diverse deep-sea observations. Those observations provide expedition-era context for the region, not a current census of every canyon or proof that all canyon floors have the same conditions.
Two U.S. Geological Survey-listed studies show why comparisons need to be made at the site level. A 2020 study examines macrofaunal diversity and density patterns in Baltimore and Norfolk canyons and nearby slope settings. A 2023 study, “Consumer isoscapes reveal heterogeneous food webs in deep-sea submarine canyons and adjacent slopes,” uses carbon and nitrogen isotope mapping to examine differences in food-web structure and energy pathways. Together, these study topics highlight that both animal communities and the ways energy moves through them can be heterogeneous.

There is no single globally representative figure for how much more abundant or diverse life is in canyons than on nearby slopes. A sound comparison needs to specify the locations and conditions being compared, along with what was measured. Species diversity, animal density, biomass and food-web pathways are related but distinct questions; one result should not be treated as an answer to all of them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can canyon communities differ from one another?
A meaningful comparison between two canyons would consider several connected factors rather than treating “canyon” as a single habitat type:
- Depth and shape: Differences in depth, wall steepness and overall geometry affect which habitats occur and how water moves through them.
- Seafloor material: Rock, boulders and ledges provide hard surfaces; soft sediments support different organisms and processes.
- Current conditions: Tides, internal waves, other currents and possible upwelling can alter particle transport, resuspension and nutrient movement.
- Food sources and transport: The supply of organic matter and the paths by which it moves influence which consumers can use it.
- Measured biology: Surveys may examine community composition, density, diversity, biomass or food-web structure, which are not interchangeable measures.
- Survey coverage and human pressures: The strength of a comparison depends on what areas have been studied and what disturbances affect each site.
This framework also explains why a dramatic observation from one expedition cannot establish how canyon ecosystems work everywhere. A finding about hard substrate, a coral community or animal density applies most directly to the place and conditions that were examined. Broader patterns require comparisons across locations and consistent measurements.

Submarine canyons are not isolated from human activity. The 2017 review by Fernandez-Arcaya and colleagues identifies fishing, mine-tailings dumping, and oil and gas extraction among pressures relevant to canyon environments. The review also discusses possible climate-driven changes to current intensity and points to the need for better understanding of canyon ecology and human impacts.
Best Value
These pressures matter partly because canyon habitats are physically diverse and connected by moving water. Activity affecting one part of a system can alter a particular habitat or introduce material into pathways that carry it elsewhere. The review’s account of down-canyon transport, for example, underscores that material entering a canyon may be redistributed rather than remaining where it first arrives. The scale and consequences of any impact depend on the activity and site; the evidence here does not support assigning one uniform effect to all canyons.
Incomplete knowledge is itself relevant to conservation. If communities, currents and food-web connections differ among canyons, protecting or assessing them requires site-specific information rather than assuming one canyon stands in for all the others. The review calls for improved understanding of canyon ecology and impacts, while the USGS studies illustrate approaches that examine biological patterns and energy pathways directly.
What is the clearest way to understand canyon biodiversity?
Think of canyon life as the outcome of several interacting features: a varied seafloor provides multiple places to live; currents redistribute particles and organic matter; and, in some locations, upwelling supports plankton and food webs in sunlit water. These conditions can produce distinctive communities and locally high abundance or diversity, but their effects depend on the individual canyon.

That distinction avoids two common misconceptions. Canyons are not simply deep holes with one kind of habitat, and they are not automatically richer in life than every neighboring slope. Their ecological importance lies in the particular mix of terrain, water movement, food supply and organisms found at each site.
