Why DayZ Vehicles and Tents Despawn After a Restart—and How to Fix It

A DayZ restart does not automatically wipe the map. Vehicles and tents normally return from the server’s saved world state, but they can be cleaned up for being ruined or past their lifetime, move during the restart, fail to respawn because vehicle events are misconfigured, or vanish after a rollback or damaged persistence store. The fix is to identify which of those happened before changing XML files.

What “despawned” can mean in DayZ

Players use despawn for several different outcomes. A car may still exist but have rolled down a slope. A tent may have been deliberately removed by cleanup rules after its lifetime expired. A host failure may have restored an older save in which the object had never been placed. Those cases look similar in-game but require different fixes.

  • Movement: Vehicles can occasionally move or slide during a restart, depending on where they were parked. The object is still present, just not at its original coordinates.
  • Cleanup: Ruined objects and objects whose lifetime has ended are eligible for removal even when persistence is enabled.
  • Event failure: Dynamic vehicles are created by the event system. If an event is disabled, has no valid spawn coordinates, or is blocked by wrecks, a replacement vehicle may never appear.
  • Rollback or loss: A database or host disconnect, corruption, accidental deletion, or a deliberate wipe can restore an earlier world state or remove placed objects.

DayZ persistence is associated with an object’s home server. The DayZ Wiki explains that world-item persistence applies only to that server; it does not follow an item to another server unless a player carries it there. Therefore, changing servers is not a valid test for whether a private server saved a vehicle or tent.

First, determine the pattern

Before editing a file, record the server version, map, mod list, and whether the server is official or privately hosted. Then compare the missing object with other objects. The pattern usually identifies the configuration layer involved.

Observation Most likely explanation First check
One intact car is missing immediately after a normal restart The vehicle moved or slid Search the original spot, nearby slopes, buildings and likely roll paths
One tent or car is gone after weeks of no interaction Its cleanup lifetime expired Check the class lifetime in types.xml and the object’s damage state
Several cars disappear after an XML change or server migration Vehicle events or persistence data are wrong Inspect events.xml, cfgeventspawns.xml and the persistence backup
All placed tents and stored cars revert to an earlier arrangement Rollback, corruption or a wiped persistence store Compare backups and inspect storage_1/ with the server stopped
Wrecks remain but usable vehicles stop spawning Damaged wrecks are occupying event slots Review the vehicle event and its damaged-vehicle cleanup setting

Four questions make the diagnosis faster: Is it one object or everything? Did it happen immediately on restart or after hours or days? Was the object ruined, damaged or intact? Is the suspected setting in persistence storage, types.xml, or a vehicle event file?

Restart timing matters

An object that disappears immediately after a routine restart suggests a different problem from one that vanishes after a month of inactivity. Immediate changes warrant a search for movement, a clean-stop failure, or a rollback. Delayed disappearance points more strongly to lifetime cleanup, especially when the object was not opened, moved or otherwise interacted with.

Compare the last known state with the first state after the restart. If inventories, player-built objects and vehicle positions all changed, treat the incident as a save or rollback problem rather than as an isolated despawn. If only one car changed and all other objects are normal, investigate its location and damage before touching global settings.

Also separate a server restart from a server change. Persistence belongs to the home server; joining another server does not prove that the original server deleted anything. Record the server identity, map and mod list whenever you test a suspected persistence problem.

Step-by-step recovery checklist

1. Confirm that the restart really completed

Check the host control panel and server log for a clean stop and start. A crash, database disconnect or forced host reboot can leave the server loading an older save. Note the exact restart time and whether players were connected while the process was shutting down. Do not make configuration changes until you know which save the server loaded.

2. Search for a vehicle that may have moved

Use the vehicle’s last known location as a starting point, not as proof of deletion. Inspect the original parking area, the downhill side of the terrain, road edges, building interiors, ditches and obstacles that could stop a sliding vehicle. Check nearby areas in the direction of the slope and any route the vehicle could have rolled along. The DayZ Wiki specifically warns that vehicles can move during a restart depending on their location.

This check is especially important when only one vehicle is missing and it was intact before the restart. Changing a lifetime value will not bring back a car that is sitting a few hundred metres away.

3. Check whether the object was ruined

Persistence does not make an object indestructible. Ruined vehicles, tents and other persistent objects are cleaned up under the game’s rules. A vehicle that was destroyed by damage, or a tent whose condition reached ruined, can disappear on the next cleanup pass even though the server restarted normally. Review screenshots, player reports and the last known condition before changing configuration.

4. Check the relevant lifetime

Open the class entry in types.xml and inspect its lifetime value. Lifetime controls how long an item can remain eligible for cleanup; it is separate from whether the world save itself is being written. Contents stored in a container can inherit the container’s lifetime, so extending the lifetime of an item inside a tent does not necessarily extend the tent.

Current DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list a 45-day lifetime for car tents, large tents, medium tents and canopy tents. That figure is a reference for those listed tent classes, not a universal value for every modded tent or vehicle. Mod authors may define different classes and lifetimes; use the class definition supplied with the mod rather than copying a vanilla value.

Interaction with a persistent object resets its cleanup timer. In practical terms, a tent that is periodically opened or otherwise interacted with is not equivalent to one left untouched for the full lifetime. A ruined object and a wiped world remain exceptions.

5. Check vehicle events, not only types.xml

Vehicles are event-driven. The vehicle class’s lifetime in types.xml does not activate a missing spawn event and cannot repair invalid event coordinates. Inspect both events.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml:

  • events.xml controls whether the vehicle event is active and how many instances the event can maintain.
  • cfgeventspawns.xml supplies coordinates for fixed vehicle events. A vehicle event with no matching or valid coordinates cannot create the intended spawn.
  • Wrecks and damaged vehicles can occupy event slots. Review the event’s damaged-vehicle cleanup behavior; remove_damaged="1" is a documented setting to check where appropriate.

Make sure the event name, counts and spawn definitions match the server’s map and mod set. A configuration copied from another map can contain coordinates that are invalid for the current terrain. If the problem began after adding or removing a vehicle mod, verify that the event and spawn definitions belong to the installed version of that mod.

6. Inspect persistence safely

The storage_1/ directory contains serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions. Stop the server before inspecting, copying or replacing it. Make a complete backup first. Deleting persistence files is not a repair step: it removes the saved placed objects and can reset the world to a new state.

Compare the current directory with the last known-good backup if one exists. A missing tent together with an older vehicle position, reset inventories or other world changes points to rollback or loss of persistence rather than a single object lifetime. If the directory is corrupted, use the host’s documented restore process and test the restored save before allowing players back in.

What each configuration file actually controls

File or directory Role What it can and cannot fix
types.xml Item classes, economy values and item lifetime Can change cleanup timing for the specified class; cannot enable a vehicle event or recover deleted persistence
events.xml Dynamic event activation and vehicle counts Can allow or restrict vehicle spawning; does not move an existing car back to its old position
cfgeventspawns.xml Coordinates used by fixed vehicle events Can correct missing or invalid spawn locations; does not change tent cleanup timers
storage_1/ Serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions Restoring a backup can recover an earlier state; deleting it removes saved placed objects
globals.xml and related economy settings Other global cleanup and restart-related controls May affect server-wide behavior, but should not be changed as a substitute for checking the specific class or event

File names and locations can differ between hosting panels, server builds and mods. Use the path exposed by your host and keep the original file names and XML structure intact.

How to change a setting without making the problem worse

  1. Stop the server completely. Wait until the process is no longer running. Editing while DayZ is active risks having the server overwrite your change or persistence data on shutdown.
  2. Back up configuration and persistence. Copy the relevant XML files and the entire storage_1/ directory to a dated, offline location. Keep at least one copy from before the change.
  3. Change one narrow setting. If the evidence points to a tent lifetime, edit that class in types.xml. If it points to a vehicle, inspect the event and spawn files first. Do not simultaneously alter lifetimes, event counts, coordinates and global settings.
  4. Validate the XML. Preserve quotation marks, closing tags and the existing encoding. A malformed file can prevent the server from loading the intended economy or event configuration.
  5. Start the server and observe one complete restart cycle. Confirm that the server starts, the expected object or event appears, and no unrelated objects reset. Record the change and result.
  6. Roll back if the symptom broadens. Stop the server, restore the backed-up file or persistence directory, and test again. Never delete storage_1/ merely because an object is missing.

There is no single current lifetime number that applies to every modded vehicle. The correct value depends on the class supplied by the mod and the server’s intended economy. Treat any example found for another map or mod as a starting point for investigation, not a universal fix.

Common scenarios and the appropriate fix

Only one parked car is missing after a routine restart

Search first. Movement is more likely than an event failure when every other vehicle is present and the missing car was intact. If it cannot be found, check its damage state and then review the persistence save. Do not begin by increasing every vehicle lifetime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

All vehicles stop returning after a configuration change

Compare the change with events.xml and cfgeventspawns.xml. Confirm the vehicle event is enabled, its counts are sensible, and its coordinates match the current map. Check for wrecks occupying the event’s available slots and review whether damaged vehicles are removed. A types.xml edit alone will not repair an event that is disabled or has no valid spawn.

A tent disappears after a long period of inactivity

Check the tent’s class and lifetime, and determine whether the tent was ruined. For vanilla car, large, medium and canopy tents, the DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list 45 days. A modded tent may use another class and value. Interaction resets the cleanup timer, but it does not preserve a ruined tent or survive a world wipe.

Every placed object reverts or disappears

Stop the server and protect storage_1/. Look for a host rollback, accidental replacement, corruption or a deliberate wipe. Restore the newest verified backup through the host’s procedure. Do not continue restarting a server with uncertain persistence; repeated starts can make it harder to identify which save is valid.

Prevention checklist for server administrators

  • Keep dated backups of storage_1/ and configuration files before updates, mod changes and maintenance.
  • Document the server version, map, installed mods and the source of each XML file.
  • Tell players that vehicles can slide during restarts and should be parked on stable, open ground when possible.
  • Monitor vehicle wrecks so damaged instances do not permanently occupy event slots.
  • Record when tents and vehicles were last interacted with, especially on low-population servers.
  • After a restart, verify one known tent, one known vehicle and another placed object before announcing that the save is healthy.
  • Change one setting at a time and retain the previous file until the next restart has been verified.

Frequently asked questions

Does restarting DayZ wipe vehicles and tents?

No. A normal restart reloads persisted world state. An object can nevertheless be removed for being ruined or past its lifetime, move during the restart, fail to respawn because an event is broken, or disappear when the persistence store rolls back or is wiped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my car disappear but other cars stayed?

Search nearby first because vehicles can slide or roll during a restart. Then check whether that car was ruined and whether its saved position exists in the current persistence state. A single missing intact car is not evidence that every vehicle lifetime needs to be changed.

How long do DayZ tents persist?

DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list 45 days for car, large, medium and canopy tents. Interaction resets the cleanup timer. The value is not a guarantee for modded tents, and ruined objects or a wiped world are exceptions.

Which XML file fixes a missing vehicle?

It depends on the symptom. events.xml controls vehicle event activation and counts, while cfgeventspawns.xml supplies fixed-event coordinates. types.xml controls class lifetime and economy values, but changing it alone cannot enable a disabled event or restore deleted persistence.

Can I delete storage_1 to make vehicles respawn?

Do not use deletion as a first fix. The directory stores serialized world state, including placed objects and vehicle positions. Removing it can erase saved tents and other objects. Stop the server and make a complete backup before any inspection or restore.

What does remove_damaged="1" do?

It is a documented vehicle-event cleanup setting to review when wrecks or damaged vehicles occupy event slots. Whether it is appropriate depends on the event and server configuration; verify the surrounding event definition rather than changing it blindly.

Why did a tent vanish after I changed servers?

World-item persistence applies to the object’s home server. It does not follow the object to another server unless a player carries it there. Return to the original server when testing whether its save contains the tent.

Should I edit XML while the server is online?

No. Stop the server completely, back up configuration and storage_1, make one narrow edit, validate the XML, and observe a full restart cycle. An online server can overwrite edits or persistence data during shutdown.

Bottom line

A restart is not, by itself, a wipe. Find the object, rule out restart movement, check whether it was ruined or past its lifetime, then inspect the vehicle event files or storage_1/ according to the pattern. Tents have documented 45-day reference lifetimes for the listed vanilla classes, while modded values are server-specific. Vehicles depend on the event system, and persistence files should always be backed up before any repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does restarting DayZ wipe vehicles and tents?

No. A normal restart reloads persisted world state. Cleanup, movement, event failure, rollback or a wipe can make an object appear gone.

Why did one car disappear while others stayed?

Search nearby for restart movement, then check damage state and persistence. One missing car does not prove a global lifetime problem.

How long do vanilla DayZ tents persist?

DayZ Wiki reference pages accessed in 2026 list 45 days for car, large, medium and canopy tents. Interaction resets the timer; ruined objects and wipes are exceptions.

Which XML file controls vehicle respawns?

Use events.xml for event activation and counts, and cfgeventspawns.xml for fixed-event coordinates. types.xml lifetime edits alone cannot repair a missing event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete storage_1 to fix despawns?

No. Back it up first; deleting storage_1 can remove saved tents, vehicles and other placed objects.

Should XML be edited while the server is running?

No. Stop the server, back up files, make one change, validate the XML and test one complete restart cycle.

The Bottom Line

A restart is not automatically a wipe. Search for movement, check ruin and lifetime cleanup, verify vehicle events, and protect storage_1/ before editing. The 45-day figure applies to listed vanilla tent classes; modded values and vehicle events are server-specific.
