A ranking position is the order produced by a particular method, category, format, eligible-player pool and update date. The first question is therefore not “Which player is really No. 1?” but “What exactly is each list measuring?”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) provides a useful documented example. Its player tables use points calculated through a sophisticated moving average, with match performances evaluated by an algorithm that considers circumstances and uses somewhat different factors in different formats. Another list may measure only a recent form window, aggregate runs or wickets, apply a different eligibility rule, or simply have been updated on another day. Compare the definitions, not just the ordinal positions.

What a cricket ranking actually tells you
A ranking is an ordered output, not a universal property of a player. “Third” means third within a specified table at a specified time. It does not mean that every analyst, format or statistical model would place that player third.

- Publisher and purpose: who made the list and what question it is intended to answer.
- Format: Test, One Day International (ODI) or Twenty20 International (T20I).
- Discipline: batting, bowling or all-round performance.
- Population: which players qualify and which matches count.
- Measurement and time window: the formula, weighting and period represented.
- Snapshot date: when the points and positions were last recalculated.
If any of these differs between two lists, the positions are answers to different questions. A Test batting table and a T20I batting table are not competing verdicts on one universal skill; they describe performance in different forms of cricket. Likewise, a bowling position cannot be compared directly with a batting position, even when both are labelled “No. 1.”

The ICC itself distinguishes a player’s rating from the player’s rank. The rating is the numerical assessment generated by the system; the rank is the player’s place relative to everyone else in that table. ICC performance ratings use a 0–1000 scale, while the displayed rank is an ordinal position. Two players can be close in points but several places apart, or separated by a large points gap while appearing next to each other if the table is tightly clustered.
The main reasons two rankings disagree
They measure different formats
Test cricket rewards sustained performance over long innings and spells, while ODI and T20I matches impose different workloads and tactical conditions. The ICC maintains separate tables for each format, and its methodology says that factors vary somewhat between formats. A player can therefore lead one format table without leading another. Treat a format label as part of the ranking’s name, not as a footnote.
They measure different skills
Batting, bowling and all-rounder tables answer different questions. A batting list may reward run production through its own rating process; a bowling list evaluates bowling performances; an all-rounder index combines batting and bowling ratings. Fielding is not folded into the ICC all-rounder index because the ICC says no satisfactory statistical rating method is available for it. A list that includes fielding, captaincy or another contribution would not be directly equivalent to the ICC index.

One list is career-oriented and another is form-oriented
The ICC describes its rankings as a career record with greater emphasis on recent results. Its FAQ contrasts this with a form ranking that looks only at a recent period. Consequently, a player who has been excellent for several seasons may remain highly rated after a short dip, while a player with a spectacular recent run may rise quickly without yet matching the first player’s career record.
Neither approach is automatically superior. A selector asking who has delivered over a long international career may prefer a career-weighted rating. A viewer asking who is in the best form this month may want a short-window measure. The disagreement reflects the question being asked.

The update dates are different
Rankings are snapshots. The ICC says men’s Test, ODI and T20I tables update on Wednesdays, while women’s ODI and T20I player rankings update on Tuesdays. A media article, database or social post may have been captured before or after that update. If a match result entered one list but not the other, the positions can diverge even when both publishers apply their stated methods correctly.
The eligible-player pool is different
A table may include every player meeting an international qualification rule, only players active in a selected period, or a competition-specific population. The ICC FAQ describes normal qualification periods of 12–15 months for Tests and 9–12 months for ODIs and T20Is. Those are normal periods stated by the FAQ, not a promise that every situation uses an identical cutoff. A list that excludes inactive players, includes domestic matches or uses a different cutoff can produce a different order.

Rank is relative. A player’s own rating can remain unchanged while another eligible player’s rating rises or falls, changing their positions in the table. The ICC says it avoids penalising players simply for not playing; nevertheless, a player’s ordinal rank can move as peers’ ratings change. This is why “he did not play, so how did he drop?” is not necessarily evidence of an error.
The formulas assign value differently
The ICC’s method is a points-based system calculated through a sophisticated moving average. A separate list may use a declared average, strike rate, wickets per match, a recent rolling window or a composite model. Unless that list publishes its methodology, you cannot infer how it treats opposition, match situation, not-outs, workload or other details. A headline that says only “best players” hides these choices.
How the ICC player-ranking method works
The ICC’s official explanation says: “The ICC Player Rankings is a table where international cricket players performances are ranked using a points based system which is worked out by doing a series of calculations leading to a sophisticated moving average.” The calculation evaluates a match performance with a programmed algorithm based on match circumstances, without human intervention or subjective assessment in that calculation. This description explains why a simple scorecard total cannot reproduce the table. Runs or wickets are inputs to a performance assessment, not the final ranking itself. The moving average retains a player’s historical record while making recent results more influential. It is therefore neither a lifetime honours list nor a pure last-season leaderboard.
The official ICC Rankings FAQ states that the normal qualification period is 12–15 months for Tests and 9–12 months for ODIs and T20Is. The same FAQ explains that the system takes a player’s entire career into account but places more emphasis on recent performances. Because the periods are described as normal, readers should not treat them as an immutable rule for every edge case.
Rating points versus rank: read both numbers
When two players exchange places, inspect the rating points before drawing a conclusion. Rank is only the ordering of eligible players. Points show the distance the method assigns between them, and the ICC scale runs from 0 to 1000. A one-place change with a one-point difference is a different situation from a one-place change across a 40-point gap.
Points also help explain apparent contradictions between dates. Suppose a player retains the same rating after a rest period while a rival’s rating changes after a match. The player’s rank may change even though no new performance was recorded for that player. Record the table date and both players’ points before claiming that someone’s form has improved or deteriorated.
Do not convert an ordinal rank into a percentage or a claim about absolute ability. “No. 5” does not mean a player is half as good as No. 1, and “No. 1” in one format does not establish superiority in another format.

How the ICC rates all-rounders
The ICC all-rounder index combines the batting and bowling points already produced by its ranking system. The formula is:
All-rounder index = (batting points × bowling points) ÷ 1,000
This multiplication makes balance important. A player with an exceptional batting rating but no bowling rating receives no all-rounder points under the formula, while a player with two solid ratings can outrank someone whose value is concentrated almost entirely in one discipline.

These are the illustrative values given in the ICC FAQ. They show why 400 batting and 400 bowling produces a higher index than 600 batting and 200 bowling, despite the latter having more batting points. The index omits fielding because the ICC says no satisfactory statistical rating method is available for that contribution. If another publication includes fielding or uses an additive formula, its all-rounder positions are measuring something else.

A reliable way to investigate a disagreement
Use this sequence whenever two articles, tables or broadcasts show different positions.
- Write down the source. Capture the publisher or organisation and the URL of the actual table, not just a headline or social post. A source that does not publish its methodology should be described as an opaque or undocumented list, not treated as interchangeable with a documented system.
- Match the format. Check that both entries say Test, ODI or T20I. Do not compare a Test position with an ODI or T20I position.
- Match the discipline. Confirm batting, bowling or all-rounder. Check whether a supposed all-rounder list includes fielding or another contribution.
- Record the date and update status. Note the exact date and, where available, time. For ICC tables, account for the Wednesday men’s update or Tuesday women’s ODI/T20I update. A result published between updates may not yet appear.
- Check who is eligible. Look for inactivity rules, minimum matches, international-only limits, domestic-match inclusion and the relevant qualification window. The ICC FAQ’s normal windows are 12–15 months for Tests and 9–12 months for ODIs/T20Is.
- Identify the measurement window. Decide whether the list represents a career with extra recent weighting, a fixed recent period, a season, a tournament or a single match set. Do not call a recent-form list a career ranking.
- Read the method before interpreting the result. Look for whether the publisher uses a moving average, a points system, raw totals, rates or a composite. For the ICC, consult the methodology explanation and FAQ.
- Compare rating points as well as positions. A rank change may be caused by a peer’s movement. Record the points for the players involved and whether either table has a different eligible population.
- State the conclusion narrowly. Say, for example, “The ICC Test batting table places Player A higher on its career-weighted points system, while the other list measures a recent form window.” Do not generalise that one player is objectively better in every format or method.
Common situations and the correct interpretation
A player is No. 1 in one list and No. 4 in another
First check whether the lists are actually the same format and discipline. If they are, compare the date, eligible players and measurement window. A career-weighted moving average can retain a player’s high position while a recent-form list moves that player down. Without the second publisher’s methodology, it is not possible to say which formula caused the difference.
A player drops without playing
Check the ratings of the players around them and the table’s update date. Because rank is relative, peers’ new results can change the order. The ICC says its system avoids penalising a player simply for not playing; that does not freeze the player’s position against movements elsewhere in the table.
A recent star is missing or appears lower than expected
Look for qualification and eligibility rules. A player may not yet have enough qualifying international performances, may fall outside a stated activity window, or may be listed in a different format table. A short burst of excellent form also may not outweigh an established career record in a system that uses the full career with additional recent emphasis.

Runs alone do not determine the ICC all-rounder index. Because batting and bowling points are multiplied, balance matters. Compare both component ratings and apply the formula rather than comparing batting totals only.
What a responsible ranking claim sounds like
Use precise wording that preserves the scope: “According to the ICC men’s Test batting table updated on [date], the player is ranked [position] with [rating] points.” If you are discussing a second list, name its stated purpose and window: “This separate list ranks performances in its declared recent period.” If its method is not published, say that the methodology is not established rather than guessing.
Avoid statements such as “the best cricketer in the world” unless you define the format, discipline, date and method. Even then, the defensible claim is “No. 1 under this ranking system,” not an all-purpose verdict. Official ICC material does not establish any universal frequency or average size of disagreement between independent lists, so do not attach a percentage or typical gap without a source.
A compact checklist for readers, writers and broadcasters
- Have I named the publisher and linked the actual table?
- Are the format and discipline identical?
- Are both snapshots from the same date or update cycle?
- Do the lists include the same eligible players?
- Is the window career-based, recent-form based, seasonal or tournament-specific?
- What does the method do with match circumstances and format differences?
- Am I reporting rating points as well as ordinal rank?
- For an all-rounder table, are batting and bowling combined by the same formula, and is fielding included?
- Have I avoided treating one system’s No. 1 as a universal judgment?
The practical rule is simple: identify the source, category, format, date, population and method before comparing positions. Once those fields match, a disagreement becomes a question about the formulas and weights. When they do not match, the rankings are not contradictory; they are answering different questions.
