Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Copilot is missing from Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, check the entry point first: Microsoft now places the Copilot Dynamic Action Button in the lower-right corner of the document, workbook, or presentation, and it can be moved beside the ribbon. If the button is absent there, verify that the app uses the account with the entitlement, install the latest Microsoft 365 build, refresh the license, check your organization’s update channel and connected-experience settings, and then use the browser or Get Help checks that match your setup.
Microsoft Support describes the change this way: “We’ve consolidated how you open Copilot into a single, consistent entry point: the Copilot Dynamic Action Button, anchored in the lower-right corner of your document.” The consolidation changes where you open Copilot, not the capabilities available to an entitled user. See Microsoft’s current procedure at How to find and enable the missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps.

First, identify which kind of “missing” you have
There are three different symptoms, and each points to a different fix:
- The button moved: Copilot is available, but you are looking in an old location. Check the lower-right Dynamic Action Button and the area beside the ribbon.
- The desktop app has no button, but the web app does: The desktop build, update channel, privacy policy, license cache, or signed-in identity is usually the differentiator.
- Neither desktop nor web shows Copilot: Confirm the account and entitlement before changing app settings. A personal subscription and a work or school entitlement are checked separately.
Do not start by buying another subscription. Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence begins with account, licensing, software version, settings, and connection checks.

Where the Copilot button is now
Open the affected document, workbook, or presentation and inspect its lower-right corner. The Copilot Dynamic Action Button is the normal entry point in current Word, Excel, and PowerPoint builds. Microsoft also allows the button to be moved next to the ribbon, so look there if someone has customized the layout. The location change does not remove Copilot from an account that is otherwise entitled.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Open a document, workbook, or presentation rather than stopping at the start screen.
- Look at the lower-right corner for the Copilot Dynamic Action Button.
- If it is not there, inspect the area beside the ribbon, where a user may have moved it.
- If neither location contains it, continue with the account and license checks below.
The button can be absent while a file is still loading. Give a large workbook or presentation time to finish opening, then close and reopen the file before treating the absence as a licensing failure.
Check the account and Copilot entitlement
Microsoft distinguishes personal Microsoft accounts from work or school accounts. The account that opens the file must be the account whose subscription or organization assignment supplies Copilot. A different identity can make the feature appear to be missing even when another identity on the same computer has access.
| Account type | What to verify | Who can resolve an entitlement problem |
|---|---|---|
| Work or school | Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the organization identity and inspect the Copilot label shown with the account. Microsoft lists Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic), and M365 Copilot (Premium), with different app entitlements. | The Microsoft 365 administrator confirms the assigned license and any organization policy. |
| Personal Microsoft account | Check the Microsoft account dashboard for a qualifying Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium subscription. Microsoft says only the subscription owner can use Copilot in desktop apps. | The subscription owner can correct the account or subscription; Microsoft account support is needed for an account problem. |
| Organization file opened with a personal identity | Switch to the work or school identity that owns the organization’s entitlement. A personal subscription does not automatically grant the same access to a work account or an organization file. | The user and organization administrator must use the correct identity and assignment. |
For the current labels and personal-subscription rules, see Microsoft’s What Copilot license do I have guide. If the label is unclear, ask the administrator to confirm the exact assignment rather than inferring access from the presence of Microsoft 365 itself.
Confirm the identity inside each desktop app
- In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, open the account page and note the email address shown.
- Compare it with the address that owns the personal subscription or the work/school account supplied by your organization.
- Sign out of an unintended identity, sign back in with the correct one, and reopen the document.
- Check for multiple profiles if the app offers more than one account. The file may have opened under a different profile from the one used in the browser.
When troubleshooting a company file, do not use a personal account merely because it has a qualifying subscription. Microsoft treats personal and work/school licensing as separate paths.
Update Microsoft 365 and refresh the license
An old build or stale license cache can hide a feature that the account is entitled to use. Microsoft’s missing-button guide recommends installing the latest Microsoft 365 build, refreshing the license through the platform-specific command, and restarting the apps.

Windows desktop apps
- Open any Microsoft 365 app.
- Choose File > Account > Update License.
- Wait for the refresh to finish. If the app reports that an update is available, install the latest build first.
- Close every open Microsoft 365 app, including apps that may be minimized.
- Restart Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, open the file again, and check the lower-right Dynamic Action Button.
Refreshing the license while another Office app remains open can leave the old state in memory. Close all the apps before judging whether the refresh worked.
Mac desktop apps
- Install the latest Office build through the normal Microsoft 365 update mechanism.
- In the affected app’s menu bar, choose About <app name> > More Info… > Refresh License.
- Close open documents and quit the Microsoft 365 apps.
- Reopen the app, sign in with the intended identity if prompted, and check for the Copilot button.
The command appears under the app’s About menu on Mac, not under the Windows-style File > Account path.
Check the Microsoft 365 update channel (business desktop deployments)
In an organization, the update channel can make Copilot unavailable in desktop apps even though the account is licensed. Microsoft says the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel does not provide Copilot features in the Microsoft 365 apps. The supported alternatives identified in the guide are Current Channel and Monthly Enterprise Channel.
- In a Microsoft 365 desktop app, open File > Account.
- Under Product Information, read the listed update channel.
- If it says Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, contact the internal help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator.
- Ask the administrator to move the device to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel under the organization’s change process.
- After the policy change and the required update, restart the apps and check the button again.
Changing channels is an administrative deployment decision, not a local preference. Do not attempt to bypass an organization’s update policy. While the channel issue is being resolved, Microsoft says the web versions of the apps remain available as a temporary option.
Review connected-experience privacy settings
Copilot relies on Microsoft 365 connected experiences. If the settings that allow experiences to analyze content or allow all connected experiences are disabled, the Copilot entry point may not appear. On managed devices, an administrator can enforce these settings, so a user may see them as unavailable or locked.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows
- Open a Microsoft 365 app.
- Go to File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
- Turn on All connected experiences.
- Close and restart the Microsoft 365 apps, then check for Copilot.
Mac
- In Word, open Word > Preferences > Privacy.
- Enable Experiences that analyze your content.
- Enable All connected experiences.
- Quit and reopen the Microsoft 365 apps.
If the controls are disabled, greyed out, or revert after a restart, the organization is probably managing them. Ask IT to review the tenant policy rather than repeatedly changing the local setting.

Why Copilot can appear on the web but not in the desktop app
Web and desktop sessions do not share every condition. The browser may be using the correct work identity while the desktop app is signed in with a personal account, or the browser may have a newer service experience while the desktop device remains on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. A desktop license cache or privacy policy can also block the button even when the web app validates the entitlement.
Use this order when web access works but desktop access does not:
- Compare the email address shown in the browser and desktop app.
- Check the desktop Product Information update channel.
- Install the latest desktop build and run Update License on Windows or Refresh License on Mac.
- Review the connected-experience settings.
- Restart all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen the file.
Until an administrator changes an incompatible channel or policy, use the web versions as Microsoft’s documented temporary option. Do not assume that web visibility proves every desktop app is correctly configured.
Troubleshoot Copilot in Microsoft 365 on the web
When using Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in a browser, start with a full page refresh. Microsoft says blocked third-party cookies can prevent Copilot from validating the license in this scenario.
- Refresh the page after the app has finished loading.
- Confirm that the browser is signed in with the account that owns the Copilot entitlement.
- Check the browser’s privacy settings for third-party-cookie blocking.
- Allow the cookies required for Microsoft 365 license validation, then refresh again.
- If the button is still missing, test in the organization-approved browser or a private window only if company policy permits it.
Cookie behavior varies by browser and by an organization’s policy. If allowing third-party cookies is prohibited, ask the administrator for an approved configuration instead of weakening security controls on your own.

Copilot License Troubleshooter
- Open the Windows Get Help app.
- Search for Copilot License Troubleshooter.
- Run the guided checks and review the account, license, and suggested-remedy results.
- Apply the recommended fix, restart Microsoft 365, and test the affected app.
Use this path when you believe the entitlement is present but the Copilot icon never appears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCopilot connectivity troubleshooter
- Open Get Help.
- Search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter.
- Run the checks for firewall rules and other connection blockers.
- Give the results to IT if the tool identifies a managed firewall, proxy, or policy that you cannot change.
A connectivity result does not replace a license check: an account can be licensed and still unable to reach the service, or connected and still lack an entitlement.
Use the right escalation path
Escalate only after recording what you checked. This prevents an administrator from repeating the same steps and identifies whether the problem is local or organization-wide.
Ask a Microsoft 365 administrator to verify
- The exact work or school account used in the desktop app and browser.
- The assigned Copilot label and entitlement for that user.
- Whether the device is on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, Current Channel, or Monthly Enterprise Channel.
- Whether the organization has disabled Experiences that analyze your content or All connected experiences.
- Any browser, firewall, proxy, or cookie policy that blocks license validation.
Give IT the app name, operating system, build information, update channel, signed-in address, and the result of the Get Help checks. If only one user is affected, an account assignment or local cache is more likely; if many users are affected, a channel or organization policy deserves priority.
When a subscription change is actually relevant
Purchase or subscription changes are relevant only when the account does not include the required Copilot entitlement. For personal accounts, Microsoft identifies Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium as qualifying subscription types and says the subscription owner is the person who can use Copilot in desktop apps. For work or school accounts, the organization must assign the appropriate license. Verify the account dashboard or administrator assignment first; adding a second subscription is not a normal fix for a misplaced button, stale cache, blocked cookie, or incompatible update channel.
A compact decision checklist
- Look in the right place: lower-right Dynamic Action Button, then beside the ribbon.
- Match the identity: compare the account in the file, desktop app, and browser.
- Confirm entitlement: use the account dashboard for personal subscriptions or ask the administrator about work/school labels.
- Update and refresh: Windows File > Account > Update License; Mac About <app name> > More Info… > Refresh License.
- Restart: close all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen the affected file.
- Check the channel: Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel blocks desktop Copilot; Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel are the documented alternatives.
- Check privacy: enable Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences, unless IT controls them.
- For web apps: refresh and review third-party-cookie blocking.
- Diagnose: run the Get Help license or connectivity troubleshooter.
- Escalate with evidence: provide the account, build, channel, privacy state, and troubleshooter result to IT or the subscription owner.
Following the checklist separates a moved control from a missing entitlement and from an organization policy that a user cannot change locally. It also leaves an administrator with the specific information needed to correct a channel, assignment, privacy policy, or connection block.
