Concorde stopped carrying passengers in 2003 because its costly, fuel-intensive operation, narrow route options and shrinking market made the service increasingly difficult to sustain. The 2000 Air France Flight 4590 crash was a major blow, but it was one pressure among several—not the sole reason Concorde retired.
Why did Concorde stop flying?
Concorde provided commercial supersonic passenger service from 1976 to 2003, according to NASA’s historical overview. Its retirement followed the interaction of engineering limits and business pressures: it could use its greatest speed advantage on only a restricted set of routes, while operating the aircraft demanded substantial resources.

The crash of Air France Flight 4590 in 2000 damaged confidence and demand. The travel downturn after September 11, 2001, further weakened the market, and the end of manufacturer support added another obstacle. NASA and the Smithsonian identify these alongside Concorde’s economic and environmental challenges; no single factor fully explains the retirement.

Sonic booms narrowed the route network
Concorde’s supersonic speed produced a sonic boom, limiting where it could fly faster than sound. It could not use supersonic speed over most land routes, so the time-saving advantage was concentrated on long routes where a substantial portion of the journey could be flown supersonically. The FAA’s Concorde overview describes noise constraints as part of the aircraft’s technical and economic challenge.

That restriction had commercial consequences: fewer suitable routes meant fewer potential passengers and less opportunity to spread demanding operating costs across a broad network. Premium positioning could serve a limited market, but it did not remove the underlying constraint.
Fuel use made each trip demanding
A 2020 NASA Office of Inspector General report, IG-20-015, gives a historical illustration: Concorde consumed about one ton of fuel per seat for a round-trip transatlantic flight, which cost an average of $12,000. The cited passage does not specify the dollar figure’s price year, so it should not be read as a current-dollar estimate or a present-day fare.

Fuel was only one part of the operating picture. High operating costs, environmental concerns and the limited market for the service all weighed on the economics, as the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s account describes.
What role did the 2000 crash play?
Air France Flight 4590 crashed shortly after takeoff in July 2000. The FAA describes a failure sequence involving a tire and a fuel tank. The accident was a serious shock to a fleet already facing high costs, restricted routes and environmental concerns; it should be understood as an accelerator of those problems rather than a complete explanation for Concorde’s retirement.

Concorde returned to service after changes following the crash, but commercial pressures continued. The Smithsonian also cites the post-September 11 decline in air travel, a shrinking market and the end of manufacturer support as factors in the aircraft’s eventual withdrawal.

Quieter supersonic flight remains an engineering research challenge. NASA describes work aimed at reducing sonic-boom loudness, including the QueSST research effort and its broader sonic-boom research. Such work addresses one important barrier that limited Concorde’s route access; it does not establish that a commercial successor is available to passengers.

Any future service would still need to demonstrate viable operating economics, route access and acceptable community and environmental effects. The sources cited here do not provide comparable present-day aircraft data with which to rank proposed or research-stage concepts.
