A missed focus, camera shake, moving subject, low light, or a dirty optical surface can each produce a soft image, and the blur pattern usually tells you which check to try first. Find out whether the whole frame is smeared, only a moving subject is soft, or a different distance is sharper; then adjust focus, shutter speed, light, support, or cleaning for that specific cause.
Start by identifying what kind of blur you have
Do not change every setting at once. Compare the blurry frame with the scene you intended to capture and look for a consistent pattern. These clues narrow the diagnosis, although they are not proof on their own: movement after focus lock can resemble a focus error, and low light can create both focusing and exposure problems.

| What you see | Most likely explanation | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The intended subject is soft, but a foreground or background area is sharper. | Focus missed the subject, or the subject was outside the focusing range. | Confirm focus, distance, and macro mode; half-press the shutter before taking the picture. |
| Edges throughout the frame have a directional smear or ghosted outline. | Camera shake during the exposure. | Hold the camera more firmly, use a two-second self-timer, or support it on a stable surface or tripod. |
| A person, pet, vehicle, or other moving object is blurred while the surroundings are comparatively sharp. | Subject motion, not camera movement. | Choose a faster shutter speed or an action setting, and add light or ISO if necessary. |
| The entire image is soft or hazy, with no clear sharp plane. | Low-light exposure, a dirty lens, or (less commonly) contamination affecting the sensor. | Inspect and clean the lens safely, then retest with more light and a supported camera. |
| Blur appears mainly in dim scenes and focus confirmation is slow or absent. | Autofocus is struggling with low light, close distance, or a low-contrast subject, while the camera may also be using a slow shutter. | Add suitable light or flash, verify focus lock, and stabilize the camera if the subject is still. |
Sony Support describes camera shake as “the cause of many blurry and unclear pictures.” That is an important starting point, but it is not a universal diagnosis: a moving subject remains blurred even when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

1. Check the subject distance and focus mode
Every compact camera has a focusing range. If the subject is closer than the lens allows, autofocus may fail or lock on another distance. Move back, or switch to macro mode when the subject is close and your model provides that mode. Macro is not automatically better for every close-up; it must match the camera’s specified focusing behavior.
Frame the subject, half-press the shutter, and keep the camera still while it focuses. On models that offer focus lock or AF lock, use it when the subject is difficult to acquire or when you need to recompose after focus. If the focus point is placed on a background or foreground object, the camera can correctly focus there while leaving your intended subject soft.
2. Wait for focus confirmation
Many compacts show a focus indicator when focus has locked. Sony recommends half-pressing the shutter and waiting for that indicator to settle before pressing fully. If the indicator does not confirm focus, do not force the exposure and hope the picture will be sharp. Improve the conditions instead: give the camera more light, move to a workable distance, or aim at a part of the subject with clear contrast.

Low light, very close subjects, and surfaces without distinct edges are all difficult for autofocus. A plain wall, a dark object in a dark room, or a subject partly hidden by reflections can give the focusing system little information. Reframe temporarily on a nearby detail with contrast, lock focus if the camera supports it, and then compose the shot without changing your distance.
3. Remove camera movement
Camera shake happens while the shutter is open. Hold the compact with both hands, keep your elbows close to your body where practical, and press the shutter gently rather than jabbing it. Avoid moving the camera until the exposure is complete.

A two-second self-timer gives the camera time to settle after your finger leaves the shutter button. It is useful for a stationary subject, especially when the camera is resting on a table, ledge, or other stable support. A tripod or similarly stable surface is appropriate for slow exposures, night scenes, and high zoom when the subject itself is not moving.
Support cannot correct a focus miss, and it cannot freeze a person, pet, or vehicle in motion. If the background is sharp but the subject is streaked, move to the subject-motion steps rather than adding more support.

4. Treat subject motion as a separate problem
Image stabilization, careful hand-holding, and a tripod address movement of the camera. They do not stop the subject from changing position during the exposure. For sports, children, pets, and other moving subjects, select a faster shutter speed or an action mode if your compact offers one.
A faster shutter needs more light. In daylight, you may be able to raise shutter speed directly. Indoors or at dusk, add available light or suitable flash, and consider increasing ISO so the camera can maintain the faster exposure. Watch the resulting image for increased noise or grain at higher ISO settings.
5. Add light without creating a new problem
More light can improve autofocus and let the camera use a faster shutter. Move the subject toward available light, turn on appropriate room lighting, or use flash when flash is suitable for the scene and your camera’s range. Flash is not a cure for every situation: it may be unsuitable for reflective surfaces, distant subjects, or scenes where the lighting must remain natural.

Raising ISO can also permit a faster shutter speed. The trade-off is visible noise or grain, particularly in darker areas. When the subject is stationary, a stable surface or tripod may produce a cleaner result than a high ISO. When the subject is moving, accepting some ISO noise is often preferable to recording motion blur.
6. Inspect and clean the lens
Fingerprints, dust, and watermarks on the front lens element can make photographs look fuzzy or hazy. Inspect the glass under good light. Use materials intended for camera optics and follow the camera maker’s cleaning guidance; avoid abrasive fabric, household chemicals, or force that could spread grit across the surface.
After cleaning, photograph a detailed, well-lit subject and compare it with the earlier frame. A dirty lens usually produces a general haze or loss of clarity. It is not the likely explanation for directional streaks, a subject that moved, or a sharp background with a soft foreground subject.
Sony also identifies sensor cleaning as a possible consideration for fuzzy or noisy-looking images on applicable models. Sensor access and cleaning procedures differ substantially between cameras, so do not open or swab the camera unless the model manual specifically describes a safe process. If the camera does not provide a user-cleaning procedure, leave internal cleaning to qualified service.
7. Escalate when sensible checks fail
Read the manual for the exact model before changing less obvious settings or assuming a feature exists. Menu names, focus modes, stabilization controls, flash behavior, and reset options vary across compact-camera families. If focus confirmation works, the subject is within range, the lens is clean, and controlled tests remain blurry in good light, contact the manufacturer’s support service. Sony’s compact-camera troubleshooting guidance notes that repair may be required when its basic steps do not resolve the problem.

Choose the fix according to the scene
The best adjustment depends on four questions: Is the subject moving? How much light is available? Are you using long zoom? Can the camera be supported? Use this decision table before changing settings.
| Scene | Priority | Useful adjustment | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Still subject in a dim room | Prevent camera movement while keeping image quality. | Use a stable surface or tripod; use the two-second timer; add suitable light if available. | A tripod does not help if the subject moves. |
| Moving person, pet, or sport | Freeze subject movement. | Use a faster shutter or action mode; add light or raise ISO as needed. | Higher ISO can add noise or grain; a tripod alone will not freeze motion. |
| Close-up subject | Keep autofocus within its working range. | Respect the minimum focusing distance and select macro when appropriate; confirm focus before shooting. | Macro mode is model-specific and is not a substitute for correct distance. |
| Distant subject at high zoom | Reduce the effect of camera movement. | Brace the camera or use a tripod; use a faster shutter when light permits. | Long zoom magnifies small movements, and a faster shutter may require more light or ISO. |
| Low-contrast or dark subject | Give autofocus enough information. | Add light, aim briefly at a nearby high-contrast detail, and wait for focus confirmation. | Recomposing after focus requires focus lock or careful half-press technique. |
| Images look generally hazy | Rule out contamination. | Inspect and clean the lens with camera-safe materials; retest. | Cleaning will not correct a focus miss or motion blur. |
What shutter speed and ISO are changing
Shutter speed controls how long the camera records light. A slower exposure gives movement more time to appear as a smear, whether the movement comes from your hands or the subject. A faster exposure reduces that time and is therefore the direct setting to prioritize for moving subjects, provided the camera can obtain enough light.
ISO changes how sensitive the camera’s imaging system is to the available light. Increasing it can help the camera use a faster shutter in a dark scene, but the resulting frame may show more noise or grain. ISO is a compromise, not a guarantee of sharpness: it cannot repair a missed focus or a lens contaminated by fingerprints.
Image stabilization, where available, is designed to compensate for some camera movement. It can be useful for hand-held shots at slower shutter speeds, but it does not hold a moving subject still. Because implementations and controls differ, check whether your model applies stabilization automatically, offers a menu switch, or changes behavior in a tripod setting.
Three practical diagnosis examples
A night portrait has a sharp wall and a blurred person
The wall remaining comparatively clear while the person is smeared points to subject motion. A tripod would steady the camera but would not stop the person from moving. Use more available light or suitable flash, select a faster shutter or portrait/action setting if offered, and raise ISO only as far as the resulting noise is acceptable.

A landscape at full zoom has soft edges across the frame
Directional softness across stationary details is consistent with camera shake, which is easier to see at long zoom. Brace the camera, use a tripod or stable surface, and trigger the exposure with a two-second timer. If the scene is bright enough, a faster shutter can also reduce the smear.
A close flower is blurry while the background is clearer
The camera may have focused beyond the flower, or the flower may be closer than the lens’s focusing range. Move to a supported distance, select macro if appropriate, half-press until focus confirmation appears, and keep the camera at that distance through the exposure. If the flower moved in wind, you must also address subject motion with light or shutter speed.
Model-specific controls matter
Compact cameras do not share one universal menu. One model may label a control AF lock, another focus lock, and another may place it in a shooting-mode menu. The presence and behavior of macro, action, stabilization, self-timer, flash, ISO, and manual shutter controls also vary.
Use the manual for your exact camera family to verify:
- the minimum focusing distance and when macro mode is required;
- what the focus indicator means and how to lock focus;
- which shutter-speed, action, or scene modes are available;
- how stabilization behaves during hand-held and tripod shooting;
- where ISO, flash, and the two-second self-timer are selected;
- whether the manufacturer provides a user-safe lens or sensor cleaning procedure;
- how to reset settings without erasing images or changing unrelated preferences.
General shutter-speed guidance from a different camera can explain the principle but cannot promise identical menu labels, ranges, or results on yours. Apply the concept, then follow the controls documented for your model.
A repeatable workflow for future shots
- Pause before changing settings. Inspect whether the whole frame, only a moving subject, or only the intended focus plane is soft.
- Confirm distance and mode. Make sure the subject is within range and that macro mode matches a close subject.
- Half-press and wait. Do not complete the exposure until the focus indicator confirms a lock, if your camera provides one.
- Check movement. For a stationary scene, brace the camera; for a moving subject, prioritize a faster shutter.
- Balance light and noise. Add light or suitable flash first when possible, then raise ISO if the faster shutter still needs more exposure.
- Clean only when the evidence points there. Inspect the lens for fingerprints, dust, or watermarks and use camera-safe cleaning materials.
- Take a controlled test frame. Change one variable, photograph a detailed subject, and compare the result at the same viewing size.
- Use support or service appropriately. A tripod is for camera stability, not subject motion; persistent failure after basic checks belongs with the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
This process prevents a common mistake: treating every soft picture as a dirty lens or buying more support when the actual issue is focus or subject movement. Diagnose the pattern, make the smallest relevant change, and verify the result on a new frame.
