Why Coastal Humidity Makes Heat Feel Worse—and How to Manage It Indoors

Humid heat feels more draining because sweat evaporates less readily, weakening one of the body’s main ways to cool itself. Indoors, prioritize a cool room during dangerous heat, measure humidity instead of guessing, and open windows only when outdoor conditions are suitable. Coastal homes vary, so temperature, moisture, sunlight, ventilation, building design, and individual health all matter.

Why does humid heat feel worse?

Your body loses heat partly when sweat evaporates from your skin. Humid air slows that evaporation, making this cooling process less effective. At the same air temperature, the result can be greater discomfort and heat strain.

There is no coastal-specific figure in the cited federal guidance that quantifies how much humidity raises perceived temperature. Avoid treating a single “feels like” increase as universal: conditions and individual responses vary.

Relative humidity is temperature-dependent. A lower outdoor relative-humidity percentage does not necessarily mean the air contains less moisture or will dry a cooler indoor space. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that, in warm, humid climates, outdoor air warmer than indoor air can bring in additional moisture even when its relative humidity is lower. EPA’s guidance on biological contaminants and indoor air quality discusses this moisture risk.

What indoor humidity should you aim for?

Use a humidity gauge rather than judging by feel. EPA’s general indoor-air guide recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50%; the page’s year is not stated. If humidity is consistently above 60%, EPA advises using a specific dehumidification strategy. That is a trigger for additional moisture control, not a recommended target. See EPA’s guide to indoor air quality and its biological-contaminant guidance.

Air conditioning can cool the room and reduce humidity. A dehumidifier can address moisture, but it does not make a dangerously hot room safe by itself. When heat is the main danger, cooling the space takes priority.

Should you open windows when it’s humid outside?

Make the decision using outdoor and indoor temperature, moisture, air quality, and ventilation needs—not the outdoor relative-humidity percentage alone. EPA advises generally closing windows when outdoor air is hotter than indoor air and opening them when it is cooler, when outdoor conditions and air quality permit. Avoid bringing in outdoor air during extreme temperatures or humidity, or when pollution or pollen is high. The details are in EPA’s extreme-heat and indoor-air-quality guidance and its guidance on biological contaminants.

Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors to remove moisture from cooking and showers. Ventilation is selective: you want to remove indoor moisture without drawing in hot, humid, polluted, or otherwise unsuitable outdoor air.

How can you make your home more comfortable?

Cool the space first

During extreme heat, EPA advises using air conditioning to keep indoor air cool. Arrange for equipment to be cleaned and serviced before hot weather. If you do not have AC, plan ahead for time in an air-conditioned place such as a library or cooling center; availability varies by location.

Reduce heat coming through windows

Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun. EPA notes that exterior awnings and louvers can reduce incoming heat more than indoor shades. Proper attic air sealing and insulation may also be worth considering as larger home-improvement projects, but the effect depends on the building.

Use fans only within safe limits

Fans move air; they do not lower the air temperature. Air movement can help sweat evaporate, but a fan is not a safe substitute for cooling in extreme indoor heat. The CDC’s “About Heat and Your Health” page, dated July 20, 2026, says: “Use fans, but only if indoor temperatures are less than 90°F.” At or above that indoor temperature, seek air conditioning or a cooler location rather than relying on a fan.

If you do not have air conditioning

Use supportive measures while arranging access to a cooler place. CDC recommends cool showers or baths, limiting stove and oven use, spending time in air-conditioned locations, and checking on friends or neighbors. Do not rely solely on fans when it is very hot. CDC also provides local HeatRisk guidance and directs people seeking help with energy costs to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Its guidance for people without air conditioning is dated June 25, 2024.

When is heat illness an emergency?

Heat can be especially risky for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with chronic conditions, and people with heart disease or asthma. Outdoor exertion also raises risk. Possible signs of overheating include muscle cramps, heavy sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, weakness, and nausea, according to CDC. Follow local health advice and ask a clinician about individual medical risks. EPA advises calling 911 for heat-related illness.
