That can be normal. If they suddenly became much quieter, sound uneven between ears, or changed after a setting or fit adjustment, check placement and app controls first, then troubleshoot the device and sound opening.
Why clip-on earbuds can sound quiet or bass-light
Clip-on open-ear earbuds leave the ear canal open. Without the seal made by an in-ear tip, bass can feel less full, outside noise remains audible, and some sound may leak into the room. Those are design trade-offs, not automatically signs of a defect. Soundcore describes these as normal possibilities for open-ear clip-ons: its guide to open-ear clip-on earbuds.

Placement also matters: a small change in where the speaker sits or which way it faces can alter how much sound reaches your ear. Fit varies by ear shape and model, so treat adjustment as an experiment rather than a guaranteed fix.
What to check first: fit and orientation
- Move the speaker toward the ear canal. Try small forward, backward, up, or down adjustments, and aim the speaker toward the canal.
- Compare the two sides. Make sure the left and right earbuds are on the correct ears and positioned similarly. If one side is quieter, note whether the difference follows the earbud or stays on the same side when you swap them, if your model allows it.
- Listen after each change. Use the same short section of familiar audio at the same volume so you can judge whether placement helped.
SOUNDPEATS gives positioning guidance for its UU2/POP Clip2, while Sennheiser advises ACCENTUM Clip users to orient the speaker toward the canal. These are model-specific examples, not a universal fit guarantee: SOUNDPEATS UU2/POP Clip2 product and FAQ page and Sennheiser ACCENTUM Clip use guidance.

Check EQ and privacy or anti-leakage settings
Open the earbuds’ companion app and inspect its equalizer (EQ) or sound profile. A profile changed in the app can alter perceived fullness or loudness; Sennheiser’s ACCENTUM Clip guidance specifically recommends checking the equalizer when sound may have been adjusted.
If the app has a privacy, sound-leakage, or anti-leakage mode, compare playback with it on and off. The effect is implementation-specific. Nothing says its anti-leakage function does not reduce actual playback volume, but attenuation of high frequencies can make sound seem quieter or less detailed. Nothing also notes that Privacy Mode may reset EQ to default on its product. Do not assume another brand’s feature behaves the same way: Nothing sound-issue guidance.

If the sound suddenly dropped or one side is quieter
A new, pronounced change is more suggestive of a setting, connection, obstruction, or device issue than the normal bass trade-off. Try these checks in order; the troubleshooting sequence below is based on SOUNDPEATS guidance for its product, so menu names and reset steps vary by model.

- Try other content. Play a different song or video. If only one recording sounds quiet, the earbuds may not be the cause.
- Test another playback device. Pair the earbuds with another phone, tablet, or computer if available. If the problem follows the earbuds, continue with their settings and sound opening; if it stays with the original device, check that device’s audio settings.
- Check left/right balance. On the phone or playback device, look for an accessibility or audio setting that shifts balance toward one side. Return it to the center if it has moved.
- Inspect the sound opening. Look for visible debris blocking the speaker opening. Clean only as the manufacturer instructs for your exact model; do not put liquid into the housing or use solvents unless the maker explicitly says they are suitable. Sennheiser warns users not to let liquids enter the housing and advises avoiding solvents and cleaning agents for ACCENTUM Clip.
- Unpair and pair again. Remove or forget the earbuds in Bluetooth settings, then pair them again using the model’s instructions.
- Reset only if needed. If the other checks do not help, follow the exact model’s reset procedure. A reset can erase saved pairing or settings, and the process is not the same across brands.
See the SOUNDPEATS UU2/POP Clip2 FAQ for its example sequence and the Sennheiser ACCENTUM Clip instructions for its cleaning cautions. Do not apply one manufacturer’s cleaning method or reset steps to another model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the design is the limitation
If the earbuds sound consistent across devices and content but still lack the bass or isolation you want, the open-ear format may simply not match your priority. Sealed in-ear earbuds can provide a more isolated fit, while noise-canceling headphones are another option for reducing surrounding noise. In-ear designs may feel uncomfortable or pressurized for some people, and open-ear clip-ons preserve more awareness of nearby sounds; the right choice depends on which trade-off matters more. Soundcore discusses these form-factor differences in its open-ear clip-on guide.
