Chromebooks replace the traditional Caps Lock key with a Search or Launcher key because that key is assigned to system navigation: it searches the Chromebook or opens the app Launcher. Caps Lock has not been removed; press Alt + Search (or Alt + Launcher) to toggle it, and on supported keyboards Fn + Quick Insert also works. You can also remap the Search/Launcher key to Caps Lock in ChromeOS settings.
What the Search or Launcher key does
Google’s Chromebook documentation describes the key plainly: “Use the Search key or the Launcher key to search, or show your apps.” Depending on the Chromebook model and ChromeOS version, the key may be printed as Search, Launcher, or shown with a magnifying-glass or circle icon.

Pressing it gives ChromeOS a system-level entry point rather than changing the state of typed letters. It can open a search interface, display installed applications, and provide access to other Chromebook content. Google describes the Launcher as a place to find and organize files, settings, and installed apps. That makes the key useful even when you are not typing: it is a way to discover and start things on the computer.

Why some Chromebooks say “Everything Button”
Google also used the name Everything Button. In a Google Chromebook Community post dated October 28, 2020, Community Manager Rebecca explained that it was “a new name for the ‘Launcher’ or ‘Search’ button on Chromebook keyboards.” The wording was intended to emphasize searching across files, apps, Google Drive, and the web. “Everything Button” is therefore a name for the same physical control, not a separate key or a replacement feature.

What is known—and not known—about omitting Caps Lock
The current official support material establishes the key’s function and the available Caps Lock alternatives. It does not document the original product-design decision that led Google or Chromebook manufacturers to omit a dedicated Caps Lock key. There is no official explanation in the cited support pages establishing a particular historical date, ergonomic study, typing-speed goal, or manufacturer-specific rationale.
It is safe to describe the result as a functional choice: the key position is used for search and app discovery, while Caps Lock remains available through a shortcut or remapping. It is not safe to present an undocumented origin story as fact. The rationale could have differed among Chromebook generations or manufacturers, and the reviewed documentation does not resolve that history.

- Press and hold Alt.
- Press the Search or Launcher key.
- Release both keys. Repeat the shortcut to switch Caps Lock off.
Some supported keyboards provide another method:
- Fn + Quick Insert toggles Caps Lock on keyboards that implement that shortcut. Quick Insert is a newer key on some Chromebook layouts, so this combination is not universal.
The shortcut is useful when you want to preserve the Search/Launcher behavior. You can search or open apps with the key by itself, and use the Alt combination only when entering a block of uppercase text.
How to make the key behave like Caps Lock permanently
ChromeOS lets you change the action assigned to the built-in Search or Launcher key. The exact wording can vary by ChromeOS release, but the route is through the keyboard settings under Device.
- Open the Settings app.
- Open Device, then open the Chromebook’s Keyboard or keyboard-and-input settings.
- Find the control for the built-in keyboard’s key assignments. Google labels this area Remap keyboard keys in its help instructions.
- Select Search or Launcher in the key list.
- Assign Caps Lock as that key’s action.
- Close Settings and test the key in a text field.
ChromeOS versions can move or rename these controls. If you do not see the option, use the Settings app’s search field for “remap keyboard keys” or “keyboard.” Be careful to select the built-in keyboard entry if more than one keyboard is listed. Remapping changes what that physical key does; it does not add a second Caps Lock key.

What changes after remapping
After the assignment, pressing Search/Launcher acts as Caps Lock instead of opening search or the Launcher. The original behavior is still available through the key-remapping menu if you later restore Search or Launcher. The Alt shortcut is most useful when the key retains its default Search/Launcher assignment; remapping is better when you use Caps Lock frequently and want a one-key action.
Using Windows and Mac keyboards with a Chromebook
External keyboards use different labels, so ChromeOS provides equivalents for its Search/Launcher shortcuts. Google’s shortcut guidance identifies the Windows key on a Windows keyboard as the Search/Launcher substitute. On a Mac keyboard, use Command in place of Search/Launcher when a Chromebook shortcut calls for that key.

The important distinction is between a key’s printed label and the role ChromeOS assigns to it. A Windows key does not become a Windows-only command when connected to a Chromebook; it is interpreted as the Chromebook’s Search/Launcher equivalent for supported shortcuts.

Search/Launcher versus a conventional Caps Lock layout
The layouts differ in what they make available as a dedicated key and in how Caps Lock is reached. The comparison below sticks to documented behavior rather than claiming that one arrangement is faster or more ergonomic.

This is a difference in default assignment, not evidence that Chromebook users cannot type uppercase text or that a conventional layout is superior. ChromeOS offers both a shortcut and a customization path.
Common problems and fixes
Alt + Search does nothing
- Confirm that you are pressing the key labeled Search or Launcher, not another key with a magnifying-glass icon on an external keyboard.
- If you are using a Windows keyboard, use its Windows key as the Search/Launcher equivalent. If you are using a Mac keyboard, use Command as the equivalent identified in Google’s shortcut guidance.
- Try the shortcut in a text field so you can immediately see whether uppercase letters are being entered.
- Check the keyboard settings to see whether Search/Launcher has already been remapped. If it is assigned to Caps Lock, pressing the key by itself should control Caps Lock and the original shortcut may no longer apply in the same way.
There is no Fn + Quick Insert option
That combination is available only on supported keyboards. Its absence does not indicate a fault. Use Alt + Search/Launcher or assign Caps Lock through the remapping control instead.
The remapping control is hard to find
- Open Settings and search for keyboard or remap.
- Open the keyboard settings under Device.
- Look for the built-in keyboard’s key-assignment or Remap keyboard keys control.
- If the Chromebook has multiple input devices, choose the built-in keyboard before selecting Search or Launcher.
Labels and placement can vary between ChromeOS versions, so a slightly different menu name does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable.
An external keyboard still uses unexpected shortcuts
Identify whether the keyboard is a Windows or Mac model and use the corresponding Search/Launcher substitute. Windows keyboards use the Windows key for this role; Mac keyboards use Command for shortcuts that call for Search/Launcher. The physical key legends remain unchanged, but ChromeOS interprets those keys according to its shortcut map.
What this design means in everyday use
With the default layout, one press takes you to system search or the app list, while a two-key command provides Caps Lock. That arrangement favors a computer-wide action at a prominent key position without removing uppercase typing. Users who only occasionally type all caps can leave the default assignment intact and use Alt + Search. Users who rely on Caps Lock for frequent text entry, coding conventions, accessibility workflows, or other repetitive tasks can remap the key instead.

Chromebook keyboards use Search or Launcher because ChromeOS assigns that key to searching and finding apps, files, settings, and web content. Caps Lock remains supported through Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher, with Fn + Quick Insert on some keyboards, and the Search/Launcher key can be remapped to Caps Lock. Google’s current documentation explains those functions and controls, but it does not establish the historical reason a dedicated Caps Lock key was omitted.
