What fell, and why the reported figures differ
The steepest moves in the reports were in South Korea, where memory-chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix traded lower alongside the broader market. The Associated Press reported the Kospi down 7.4% to 5,914.35 on Oct. 13, its lowest level since late July. Reuters, in a separate report republished by Investing.com that day, gave a different snapshot: the index was down 7.2% to 5,923.37.

The company figures also vary between reports. These are source-specific snapshots, not a reconciled set of closing returns; neither article supplies primary exchange data that resolves the difference.

The distinction matters: South Korea’s session and the prior U.S. trading session are not interchangeable, and a reported market snapshot should not be presented as a verified closing move unless the source identifies it as one. The article’s headline figures of Samsung down as much as 8.8%, SK Hynix 9.2% and Micron 4% are not all corroborated by these reports.

Why investors were worried about AI spending
AI data centers require substantial investment in computing equipment and supporting infrastructure. The concern described in the reports was not simply whether demand exists, but whether the spending can produce durable returns—and whether companies can finance the buildout. Reuters cited investor concern about returns on AI investment; Bloomberg reporting republished by Mint also pointed to financing risk, higher interest rates and debt-funded deals.
Tan’s remark sharpened that debate. At an event in Singapore, Bloomberg via Mint quoted Broadcom’s CEO as saying: “A lot of investors have no clue what they are investing in,” and that they “set very extreme expectations only to find out that it’s almost like they are in a casino.” This was a warning about some investors’ understanding and expectations, not a formal prediction that AI investment would stop. Mint also quoted Ha SeokKeun, chief investment officer at Eugene Asset Management: “Uncertainty over whether the upcycle can last into 2028 and beyond appears to be weighing on valuations and share prices” of Korean chipmakers.

Those comments offer context for investor anxiety, not proof of what any particular trader did or a measured explanation for the size of the sell-off. The reports connect the remarks and broader questions about AI returns with the market decline, but do not isolate a single cause.
How CXMT added to pressure on memory-chip shares
Reports of advances by China’s CXMT raised a separate competitive concern for established memory suppliers Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. Reuters reported that CXMT was advancing a higher-density 4F² DRAM design and had next-generation server-memory products targeted for year-end. The AP likewise described reports of CXMT advances as a challenge to the established companies.

A reported development or target is not the same as demonstrated commercial readiness, production scale or a proven effect on competitors’ sales. The available reports do not establish those outcomes or provide a CXMT market-share figure. Investors were responding to the possibility of stronger competition alongside uncertainty about AI demand and financing—not to a confirmed account of CXMT’s commercial impact.

The reported fall in the Kospi and sharp declines in Samsung and SK Hynix show a severe repricing of South Korean chip shares in that session. The U.S. figures reported by AP show that weakness extended to chip-related names there the preceding Monday, including Micron, Broadcom, Nvidia and AMD. AP reported Broadcom down 1.9%, Nvidia down 1.3% and AMD down 2.3% in that U.S. trading, in addition to Micron’s 3.9% decline.

But these reports do not establish one synchronized global percentage decline, a definitive cause for each company’s move, or a settled outlook for AI infrastructure demand. The clearest reading is that investors confronted overlapping risks: uncertain returns on a costly AI buildout, the possibility that financing becomes harder or more expensive, and reports that a Chinese competitor is progressing in memory technology.
