China is a major test for Apple’s first foldable iPhone because Huawei already dominates the country’s foldable market, while IDC sees a substantial opportunity for iOS devices. That makes China a defensible candidate for Apple’s biggest foldable battleground—but the available figures do not rank it against every other market on a single measure.
As of October 3, 2026, Apple’s iPhone Duo had been announced but had not yet reached its scheduled preorder date. There were no post-launch sales results or realized China market-share figures to show whether Apple could turn the forecast opportunity into actual demand.
Why China is a tough test for Apple
Apple would enter a market where Huawei already has an established foldable range, customer familiarity and strong sales channels. IDC estimates that Huawei accounted for 79.4% of China’s foldable-phone unit shipments and 82.2% of their value in Q2 2026. Those are quarterly estimates for China, not full-year figures or Apple sales results. IDC
The lead matters beyond the headline share. A new device must persuade buyers to consider a different brand in a category where Huawei already has products and market presence. Apple’s challenge is therefore not simply to launch a technically capable phone; it must make the Duo compelling enough to change established buying preferences.

What IDC forecasts for iOS foldables in China
IDC projects China’s iOS foldable segment at 2.0 million units and $4.9 billion in value in 2026, rising to 4.4 million units and $10.3 billion by 2030. It forecasts that Apple will capture 39.7% of China foldable units and 50.8% of foldable value by 2030. IDC
The forecast value share is higher than the projected unit share, implying a premium-priced sales mix if those projections materialize. It is not evidence that Apple has already won that share: both the market totals and Apple’s projected position are forecasts, not achieved results.

What the iPhone Duo brings—and what remains uncertain
Axios reported that Apple debuted the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. The announced starting configuration is 256GB for $1,999. Preorders were scheduled to begin October 16, with shipping scheduled for October 23; both dates were still in the future on October 3. Axios
IDC describes a 7.6-inch internal display, a 5.4-inch external display and a custom titanium hinge. The software is intended to support app continuity, side-by-side use and paired workflows. These specifications and capabilities address the basic promise of a foldable: a phone when closed and more room for work when opened. They do not, by themselves, establish how well the device will perform in everyday use.

IDC identifies long-term hinge and display durability, crease visibility and added weight as open first-generation questions. What Apple needs to prove to challenge Huawei
The competitive test extends beyond display size or hinge material. Apple needs to make the Duo attractive in a market where Huawei already has a strong position, while showing that the foldable format works as a dependable daily device.

- Value: whether consumers consider the announced $1,999 starting price justified by the device’s utility and execution.
- Design: whether the phone’s thickness, weight and visible crease are acceptable in ordinary use.
- Reliability: whether the hinge and displays hold up over time; no independent test results are established in the cited material.
- Software: whether app continuity, side-by-side use and paired workflows are useful in practice and supported by the apps people want to use.
How China fits the wider foldable market
IDC’s worldwide outlook projects foldable-phone market value at $26.7 billion in 2025, $42.0 billion in 2026 and $68.2 billion by 2030. It projects global unit shipments of 20.3 million in 2025 and 35.8 million by 2030. These are IDC forecasts, not confirmed market outcomes. IDC

China merits the battleground framing because it combines a formidable incumbent with a large projected iOS opportunity. But the word “biggest” is an editorial judgment, not a formal ranking: the cited figures do not compare every country using one consistent measure.
