When ChatGPT uses web search, open the cited page, find the passage behind the claim, check that the wording and scope match, review the page’s publication or update date, and judge whether the publisher is authoritative for that subject. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and that ChatGPT can even fabricate citations. Treat every important citation as an invitation to verify the evidence yourself.
What a ChatGPT citation actually means
ChatGPT may attach citations when a response uses web search. Selecting a citation opens the source page; on the desktop web experience, a citation may also offer a preview. When available, the Sources panel collects cited pages and other relevant links. These features make the underlying material inspectable, but they do not turn the source into proof that every sentence in the answer is true.

It helps to separate two jobs:
- Navigation: the citation tells you where ChatGPT found, or says it found, information.
- Evidence assessment: you decide whether that page really supports the exact claim, in the stated context and for the date or location that matters.
A citation can point to a page that mentions a topic without supporting the stronger conclusion ChatGPT drew from it. It can also point to a once-accurate page that has since become stale, or to a secondary article that repeats an error. The visible citation is therefore the start of checking, not the end.

Where citations appear and when search is used
Web-search answers
Responses that use ChatGPT search may display linked citations beside relevant statements. You can select one to open its source. On desktop web, a preview may be available before you leave the conversation. The Sources panel, when shown, can include both the pages cited in the response and other links that the search considered relevant.

Automatic versus manual search
ChatGPT can choose search when current web information is likely to help, and some interfaces also let you select search yourself. A normal conversational answer does not necessarily perform a web search, so the absence of a citation does not prove that a claim was checked online. Conversely, the presence of a citation does not prove that every detail was retrieved correctly.
Enterprise and Edu workspaces
In Enterprise and Edu, search availability and behavior can depend on workspace settings, role permissions, usage limits and controls over restricted-access content. Two people can therefore see different search or citation behavior for the same question. If a citation is missing or a source cannot be opened, your organization’s configuration may be part of the explanation.
Deep-research reports
Deep-research reports are a separate workflow. OpenAI describes those reports as including citations or source links that readers can verify. That makes source review easier, but the same evidence checks still apply: inspect what the linked material says, how current it is and whether it is authoritative. A report with many links is not automatically more reliable than a shorter answer.

Why a citation does not guarantee a correct answer
Search coverage is limited
Search results can be incomplete. A relevant government record, technical paper, local rule or recent announcement may not appear in the pages retrieved for your prompt. A response can sound comprehensive while omitting the decisive source.
Pages change or become outdated
Web pages are edited, moved or abandoned. Product specifications, eligibility rules, software behavior and public-health advice can change after a page was published. Always look for a publication date, an “updated” date or a revision history. If no date is shown, treat the page’s currency as uncertain and seek a dated primary source.
The retrieved result can be wrong for the question
A search engine may return a page that uses the same words but addresses a different country, edition, population or time period. ChatGPT can then summarize a technically relevant page as if it answered your narrower question. The citation is genuine as a link, yet the answer is still mismatched.

ChatGPT can produce fabricated references
OpenAI’s truthfulness guidance warns that ChatGPT can generate inaccurate or misleading information, including fabricated quotes, studies, citations or references to nonexistent sources. A citation-like label that leads nowhere, leads to an unrelated page or contains details the page never states is a warning sign. Confidence, fluent prose and a citation marker are not measures of reliability.

A step-by-step method for checking a cited claim
Use the following process for any claim that could affect a decision, cost money, expose private information or create a safety, legal, medical or security risk.
- Open the citation itself. Select the citation in the answer and confirm that it resolves to a real page. Do not rely on a domain name or a search-result snippet alone.
- Locate the supporting passage. Use the page’s find function for the key term, number, date or quoted phrase. Read the surrounding paragraphs, headings, footnotes, tables and qualifying language.
- Compare the claim word for word. Ask whether the page supports the same subject, action, number and degree of certainty. “May,” “can,” “is associated with” and “is proven to” are materially different statements.
- Check scope and conditions. Verify country or jurisdiction, product model, software version, study population, measurement method and time period. A result for one edition or region cannot automatically be generalized to another.
- Check the date. Record the publication and last-updated dates when they are available. For changing subjects, prefer a recent page and look for an official change log or current notice.
- Assess the publisher. Decide whether the organization has direct authority over the fact. A regulator, standards body, original researcher, court, manufacturer or named data producer is usually stronger for its own records than an unsourced summary.
- Trace primary evidence. If the page quotes a study, dataset, regulation or announcement, follow that reference. A secondary article can help explain an issue, but the primary document is where you verify the original wording and limitations.
- Look for independent agreement. For important claims, check another authoritative source that did not simply copy the first page. Agreement is useful only when the sources are genuinely independent and use comparable definitions.
- Record what remains uncertain. Note missing dates, inaccessible documents, conflicting figures or a source that supports only part of the answer. Your conclusion should be no stronger than the evidence you can inspect.
The four tests to apply to every source
| Test | Question to ask | What a strong result looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Direct support | Does the page state or demonstrate the precise fact ChatGPT asserted? | The relevant passage matches the claim’s wording, number and certainty. |
| Scope | Does it cover the same people, place, product, version and period? | Conditions and exclusions align with your question. |
| Currency | When was it published or updated, and has the subject changed? | A recent, clearly dated page or an official revision history. |
| Authority | Why should this publisher know or control this fact? | A primary record or a specialist organization with transparent methods. |
These tests prevent a common mistake: treating a source as authoritative in general rather than authoritative for the particular claim. A newspaper may be useful for a timeline but not for the exact wording of a technical standard. A vendor’s page can establish what the vendor says its product does, but independent testing may be needed to establish real-world performance.
How to detect a citation that only appears to support the answer
Topic match without claim match
Suppose ChatGPT says a policy “requires” a document and cites an explainer that merely discusses the policy. Search the page for “must,” “required” and the relevant exception. If the page says the document is recommended or required only in one circumstance, the answer overstated it.
Numbers without definitions
When an answer gives a percentage, limit or date, identify what was counted and how it was measured. A rate might refer to respondents rather than the whole population; a storage limit might apply per file rather than per account. If the cited page does not define the number, do not silently fill in the missing definition.

Quotes that cannot be found
Search the cited page for a distinctive phrase. If the quotation is absent, check the original speech, report or transcript instead of assuming the wording is accurate. Quotation marks in a ChatGPT response are not evidence that a person said those exact words.
Inferred conclusions presented as facts
A source may provide observations from which a reasonable analyst could form a conclusion, while ChatGPT states that conclusion as established fact. Separate what the source directly reports from what is an interpretation. Ask for the reasoning and for sources that test the interpretation, not merely sources that mention the underlying topic.
What to do when a citation is broken, blocked or missing
The link returns an error
Ask ChatGPT to search again and specify the subject, preferred source, date range or location. OpenAI recommends this kind of targeted follow-up when a result appears wrong. If the page has moved, search the publisher’s site for the title or a distinctive phrase, then verify that the replacement is the same document.
The page is behind a login or paywall
Do not treat an inaccessible headline as verified evidence. Look for an official abstract, public filing, open version, document repository or another authoritative source that states the same fact. If only a summary is available, label your conclusion as limited to that summary.
No citation is shown
Ask whether search was used and request sources for each material claim. You can also repeat the question with search selected, where that option is available, and require dated primary sources. A citation request does not guarantee that a valid source exists, so inspect every returned link.
Two sources disagree
Compare definitions, dates, jurisdictions and methods before choosing a side. A newer rule may supersede an older one; two studies may measure different outcomes; or one source may report preliminary findings. Ask ChatGPT to explain the disagreement with separate citations, then read the underlying documents yourself.

Prompts that make verification easier
Specific instructions can produce a more auditable answer, although they cannot remove the need for checking. Useful requests include:
- “Search the web and cite the primary source for each factual claim. Include publication or update dates.”
- “For every citation, quote the exact passage that supports the claim and identify any limitation or exception.”
- “Use sources from [a named regulator, standards body or official organization] and restrict the answer to [country, product version or date].”
- “The linked source appears not to support this statement. Search again and explain what changed.”
- “Separate facts stated by the source from your inference, and flag anything you cannot verify.”
These prompts improve traceability by narrowing the search task and exposing uncertainty. They do not make a generated citation authentic by themselves; you still need to open the page and inspect it.
Applying the method to different kinds of claims
Technical instructions
Check the exact software or hardware version, operating system and configuration. A help page for an earlier release may describe controls that no longer exist. Follow the documented steps in a non-critical environment before applying them to production systems, and confirm that commands have the same effect as the answer claims.
Legal, regulatory and policy information
Verify the jurisdiction, effective date, definitions and exceptions in the original law, regulation or agency guidance. A general article may summarize a rule but cannot establish how a court or regulator will apply it to your facts. For a consequential decision, obtain qualified professional advice.
Health and safety information
Check the issuing health authority, evidence date, population and contraindications. Do not treat a citation as a diagnosis or a substitute for a clinician. If advice concerns an emergency, use an appropriate emergency service rather than waiting for a conversational answer.

Product capabilities and limits
A manufacturer’s page is the right source for announced features, compatibility and official limits. For reliability, speed or durability claims, look for transparent independent testing and note its conditions. Distinguish a maximum specification from typical performance.
A compact verification checklist
- Did the citation open to a real, identifiable page?
- Did you read the passage rather than only the headline or snippet?
- Does it support the exact wording, number and certainty of the answer?
- Do the geography, audience, version and dates match your situation?
- Is the page current, and does it show when it was updated?
- Is the publisher authoritative for this particular claim?
- Can you trace the statement to a primary document or dataset?
- Have you checked an independent source when the stakes are high?
- Did you record exceptions, uncertainty or inaccessible evidence?
If any answer is “no,” treat the claim as unverified and narrow your conclusion until you can inspect better evidence.
What a citation can and cannot do for you
A citation gives you a path to inspect the material behind a response. It can save time locating a regulation, paper, announcement or documentation page, and it can reveal the sources ChatGPT used. It cannot guarantee that the page was interpreted correctly, that the search found every relevant source, that the information is current or that the citation itself was not fabricated. The reliability of your conclusion comes from the match between claim and evidence, not from the presence of a link.

Why does ChatGPT sometimes answer without citations?
A response may not have used web search, or citation display may be unavailable in that interface or workspace. Ask whether search was used and request dated sources for claims that need verification.
Can I verify a citation if the source requires a subscription?
Look for the original public document, an official abstract, a repository copy or another authoritative source that states the same fact. Treat an inaccessible headline or snippet as incomplete evidence.
What should I do if the cited page contradicts ChatGPT’s wording?
Keep the source’s narrower wording, note the exception or uncertainty, and ask ChatGPT to search again with a specific source, date or location. Do not rely on the stronger statement until it is independently supported.
Are citations in deep-research reports automatically trustworthy?
They are inspectable source links, not a correctness guarantee. Apply the same checks for direct support, scope, date and authority.
Does a confident tone mean a claim is reliable?
No. OpenAI warns that confidence is not a measure of reliability and that ChatGPT can produce inaccurate information or fabricated references. Inspect the evidence, especially for high-stakes decisions.
