CDR thumbnails disappear when one of several layers breaks: File Explorer may be configured to show icons only, .cdr may be associated with the wrong CorelDRAW version, Corel Graphics – Windows Shell Extension may be missing, the thumbnail cache may be stale, or the file may lack a usable embedded thumbnail. Work through the checks below in that order, starting with the least disruptive test.
First, identify the scope of the failure
Open a folder containing several CorelDRAW files and compare results. This distinction determines where to look next:
- Every local CDR file shows a white or application icon: check Explorer settings, the file association, and the Corel shell extension.
- Only files on a NAS, server, or cloud-synced folder fail: check the location and any network-folder policy before changing CorelDRAW.
- Only one file fails: the file’s embedded thumbnail may be missing or corrupt.
- Only very old files fail: compatibility may be the issue; Corel says files older than version 6 may not be recognized by the thumbnail workflow.
This quick test prevents you from reinstalling CorelDRAW when the problem is limited to one damaged document or one storage location.
1. Turn on a thumbnail-capable Explorer view
- Open the folder in File Explorer.
- Choose View and select Large icons, Medium icons, or Extra large icons (the exact labels vary by Windows release). List and Details views normally show file icons rather than a useful artwork preview.
- Open the folder’s view options and make sure Explorer is not set to show only icons. On Windows systems this setting is commonly exposed through Folder Options, View, as Always show icons, never thumbnails.
Microsoft documents a policy named Turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons. If that policy is enabled, Explorer deliberately suppresses thumbnails. On a managed computer, an administrator can enforce it, so a local preference may not persist. 2. Re-establish the intended CDR association
Installing a newer CorelDRAW release does not necessarily replace Windows’ stored UserChoice association. Corel specifically warns that the association can remain tied to an older installation, producing white or application icons.
- Right-click a
.cdrfile and choose Open with. - Select the CorelDRAW version you actually use. If it is not listed, browse to that installation’s executable.
- Enable Always use this app to open .cdr files, then confirm.
- Close and reopen the folder, and test more than one CDR file.
Current Windows and CorelDRAW releases can use slightly different wording, but the goal is the same: the extension must open with the intended CorelDRAW installation. Corel’s supported-type list also includes CDT, DES, FILL, CPT, CSL, and PAT; CPT belongs to Corel PHOTO-PAINT and DES to Corel DESIGNER, while the other listed types are associated with CorelDRAW as described in Corel’s support article.
3. Check Corel Graphics – Windows Shell Extension
Corel describes this component as the part that “lets you view the contents of your Corel graphics files through thumbnails.” CorelDRAW can open a document perfectly while Explorer still lacks the provider needed to render its preview.
Verify that it is installed
- Open Installed apps (or Programs and Features on older Windows versions).
- Search for Corel Graphics – Windows Shell Extension.
- If it is present, continue to the repair step below if thumbnails remain absent.
Add or repair it through the suite installer
- Start the CorelDRAW installer or maintenance program for the installed suite.
- Choose Modify (or the equivalent change-installation option).
- Under Utilities, enable Windows Shell Extension.
- Finish the change, restart Windows, and test a folder containing several CDR files.
If the component was already selected but is damaged, use the installer’s Repair path. The exact screens differ by CorelDRAW edition, so use the labels shown by your installer. Corel documents both modification and repair as troubleshooting paths in its official guidance.

Windows normally checks its thumbnail cache first. When no cached preview exists—or the file’s modification time is newer than the cached copy—it asks the registered thumbnail provider to extract one. A stale cache can therefore hide a preview even after you correct the association or shell extension.

- Open Windows search and launch Disk Cleanup for the system drive.
- Select the Thumbnails item. Leave unrelated cleanup categories unchecked unless you intend to remove them.
- Run the cleanup, restart Windows, and revisit the folder in an icon view.
Cache clearing is diagnostic, not a guarantee. Microsoft cautions that “Explorer may choose not to display a thumbnail even if a provider is available”; see its thumbnail-handler guidelines. The provider architecture is described in the thumbnail providers documentation.
5. Repair a single CDR file
If other CDR files display normally, focus on the document itself. Corel says a file-specific thumbnail may never have been added or may be corrupted.
- Open the affected file in the intended CorelDRAW version.
- Save it again, preferably to a new filename so the original remains untouched.
- Close CorelDRAW, return to Explorer, and allow time for the new thumbnail to be generated.
If the file will not open, or opens with warnings, recover it from a known-good backup or use CorelDRAW’s available import/open recovery options before overwriting the original. A resave cannot repair a document that the application itself cannot read.
6. Handle old files and storage-location differences
Files older than CorelDRAW version 6
Corel states that an old file predating version 6 may not be recognized as a CorelDRAW file by the described thumbnail workflow. Test whether it opens, then resave it in a compatible current version. If newly saved copies thumbnail correctly, the original format—not Explorer’s global configuration—is the differentiator.
Network and cloud folders
Copy one affected file to a local folder such as Documents and test it there. A local thumbnail proves that the document and provider work, while a network-only failure points toward Explorer’s network-folder behavior, permissions, offline availability, or an administrator policy. Do not treat a local success as proof that every network share will render previews.

Common errors and recovery steps
“The file opens, but the icon is still white”
Opening proves the association, not that Explorer has a thumbnail provider. Verify the Windows Shell Extension and then clear the cache.
“I enabled thumbnails, but nothing changed”
Confirm that the folder is using Large, Medium, or Extra large icons. Then check the policy setting; an administrator may be enforcing icon-only behavior.

Test a different CDR file and a local folder. If only one document fails, resave it. If every file fails, recheck the association and whether the shell-extension feature is installed for the same CorelDRAW suite you launch.
“The preview appears and then disappears”
This can indicate cache regeneration, a policy refresh, or a location that is not consistently available. Restart Explorer or Windows after changing settings, then compare a local file with the network copy.
