Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →drawImage() is not creating new detail when you enlarge an image: it resamples the source pixels. If the source is too small, the enlarged result will be soft. If the entire canvas looks blurry—especially on a Retina or other high-density display—the canvas bitmap is probably smaller than its CSS display size. Fix the right problem: use a source with enough intrinsic pixels, size the backing store with window.devicePixelRatio, and choose image smoothing deliberately.
Start by identifying which kind of blur you have
Look at the symptom before changing code. Draw the same image at its natural dimensions and at the intended output size, then inspect other canvas content such as lines or text.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| Only the enlarged or reduced image is soft | The source is being resampled, or the source rectangle is wrong | Check intrinsic source dimensions, destination dimensions, and crop coordinates; use a larger source when necessary |
| Everything in the canvas is soft, including vector paths and text | The canvas bitmap is smaller than its CSS display size on a high-density display | Use a device-pixel-ratio-aware backing store and scale the context |
| Pixel art has fuzzy edges | Image smoothing is enabled (the default) | Set imageSmoothingEnabled to false for that draw |
| Photographs look jagged after a change | Smoothing was disabled for continuous-tone content | Leave smoothing enabled and provide an appropriately sized source |
What drawImage() actually scales
The Canvas 2D API supports three useful forms:
ctx.drawImage(image, dx, dy)draws at the image’s intrinsic width and height.ctx.drawImage(image, dx, dy, dWidth, dHeight)resamples the complete image into the destination rectangle.ctx.drawImage(image, sx, sy, sWidth, sHeight, dx, dy, dWidth, dHeight)crops a source rectangle and resamples it into a destination rectangle.
Scaling up spreads a finite number of source pixels over more destination pixels, so it can look blurry. Scaling down too aggressively can discard detail and appear grainy. A rendering flag cannot recover detail that is absent from the source. Before changing quality settings, log the image’s intrinsic dimensions and the destination dimensions you request.
console.log({
sourceWidth: image.naturalWidth || image.width,
sourceHeight: image.naturalHeight || image.height,
destinationWidth: dWidth,
destinationHeight: dHeight
});
Small text inside a bitmap is especially vulnerable: enlarging the bitmap also enlarges the text’s original antialiasing and can reduce legibility. When text must remain crisp, render it as canvas text or use a source prepared for the final size instead of repeatedly enlarging a small raster.

Fix an image-only problem: match source and destination pixels
Use a sufficiently large source
Choose a source whose intrinsic dimensions meet or exceed the output dimensions at the quality you need. For a 1,200 × 800 output, a 300 × 200 source must be enlarged four times in each axis; the browser can interpolate but cannot invent photographic detail. If you control asset generation, export variants close to the actual display sizes rather than one tiny file for every use.
Check both rectangles in the crop overload
With the nine-argument form, an incorrect sx, sy, sWidth, or sHeight can select a low-detail or unintended area before scaling. Confirm that the source rectangle lies within the image’s intrinsic dimensions and that its aspect ratio matches the destination rectangle. A mismatched ratio stretches content and often looks soft even when the source has enough pixels.
function drawCover(ctx, image, x, y, width, height) {
const sourceRatio = image.naturalWidth / image.naturalHeight;
const destinationRatio = width / height;
let sx = 0, sy = 0, sWidth = image.naturalWidth, sHeight = image.naturalHeight;
if (sourceRatio > destinationRatio) {
sWidth = image.naturalHeight * destinationRatio;
sx = (image.naturalWidth - sWidth) / 2;
} else {
sHeight = image.naturalWidth / destinationRatio;
sy = (image.naturalHeight - sHeight) / 2;
}
ctx.drawImage(image, sx, sy, sWidth, sHeight, x, y, width, height);
}
Choose smoothing for the content
imageSmoothingEnabled defaults to true. That is normally desirable for photographs, screenshots, and smooth illustrations because interpolation avoids harsh block edges. For pixel art, icons designed on an integer grid, or deliberately blocky sprites, disable it immediately before drawing:
ctx.imageSmoothingEnabled = false;
ctx.drawImage(sprite, 0, 0, sprite.width * 8, sprite.height * 8);
Restore the setting when later draws need conventional interpolation:

ctx.imageSmoothingEnabled = true;
ctx.drawImage(photo, 320, 0, 640, 360);
imageSmoothingQuality can express a preference such as "low", "medium", or "high" where supported. Treat it as a hint, not a guarantee of a particular filter or identical output across browsers. It does not replace a correctly sized source or backing store.
Fix a blurry whole canvas on Retina and other high-DPI displays
A canvas has two sizes: its bitmap dimensions (canvas.width and canvas.height) and its CSS display dimensions. If a 300 × 150 bitmap is stretched to 600 × 300 CSS pixels, every bitmap pixel is being enlarged. The effect is more obvious when window.devicePixelRatio is 2 or higher.
Measure the laid-out CSS size, allocate that size multiplied by the device pixel ratio, keep the CSS size unchanged, and scale the drawing coordinate system back to CSS pixels:
function configureCanvas(canvas) {
const dpr = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
const rect = canvas.getBoundingClientRect();
canvas.width = Math.round(rect.width * dpr);
canvas.height = Math.round(rect.height * dpr);
canvas.style.width = `${rect.width}px`;
canvas.style.height = `${rect.height}px`;
const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');
ctx.setTransform(dpr, 0, 0, dpr, 0, 0);
return { ctx, width: rect.width, height: rect.height, dpr };
}
const canvas = document.querySelector('#chart');
const { ctx, width, height } = configureCanvas(canvas);
ctx.clearRect(0, 0, width, height);
ctx.drawImage(image, 0, 0, width, height);
Call this after layout has established the canvas size. Drawing coordinates remain in CSS pixels, while the backing bitmap contains enough physical pixels for the display.

Resize safely
Assigning canvas.width or canvas.height clears the bitmap and resets the drawing state, including transforms. If a responsive layout changes size, run the configuration again, then redraw every scene element. The example uses setTransform so a previous transform does not accumulate; if your code uses scale, obtain a fresh context state or reset the transform before applying the new ratio.
const resizeObserver = new ResizeObserver(() => {
const state = configureCanvas(canvas);
render(state.ctx, state.width, state.height);
});
resizeObserver.observe(canvas);
Display density can also change when a window moves between monitors or when zoom changes. Recheck the ratio and redraw when that happens. Keep the CSS dimensions in CSS pixels; do not set both bitmap and CSS dimensions to the multiplied values, or you will scale twice.
A complete sharp-image example
const canvas = document.querySelector('#preview');
const image = new Image();
image.src = '/images/product-1600.jpg';
function setupAndRender() {
const dpr = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
const rect = canvas.getBoundingClientRect();
canvas.width = Math.max(1, Math.round(rect.width * dpr));
canvas.height = Math.max(1, Math.round(rect.height * dpr));
canvas.style.width = `${rect.width}px`;
canvas.style.height = `${rect.height}px`;
const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');
ctx.setTransform(dpr, 0, 0, dpr, 0, 0);
ctx.imageSmoothingEnabled = true;
ctx.imageSmoothingQuality = 'high';
ctx.clearRect(0, 0, rect.width, rect.height);
// Use CSS-pixel coordinates after the DPR transform.
ctx.drawImage(image, 0, 0, rect.width, rect.height);
}
image.addEventListener('load', setupAndRender);
new ResizeObserver(setupAndRender).observe(canvas);
This improves the canvas’s physical pixel density; it cannot make a low-resolution source intrinsically detailed. Replace the source with a larger asset when the image itself remains soft.

The source is sharp, but the canvas is not
- Inspect the canvas bitmap size versus
getBoundingClientRect(). If the bitmap is smaller, apply the DPR setup. - Check that CSS does not stretch the canvas through a different width or height than the measured rectangle.
- After resizing, recreate the transform and redraw; changing bitmap dimensions clears the canvas.
Only enlarged images are blurry
- Compare intrinsic dimensions with destination dimensions.
- Use a larger source or a destination closer to the source’s native size.
- Verify crop coordinates and aspect ratio in the nine-argument overload.
Pixel art still has fuzzy edges
- Set
imageSmoothingEnabled = falsebefore the pixel-art draw. - Use integer destination coordinates and integer scale factors where possible.
- Make sure a later rendering function has not turned smoothing back on.
Photographs look harsh after “fixing” blur
- Re-enable smoothing. Disabling it preserves hard source pixels and is not a photographic sharpening method.
- Use an appropriately sized source instead of relying on nearest-neighbor enlargement.
Text became unreadable
Do not enlarge a tiny text-bearing bitmap when legibility matters. Render text directly at the target canvas size or supply a higher-resolution source.
The image appears stretched
Preserve the source aspect ratio, or deliberately crop with a source rectangle as shown above. Independent width and height scaling changes shapes and distributes detail unevenly.

Performance and reliability considerations
- A higher-DPR backing store increases memory and fill work roughly with the number of bitmap pixels. Cap unusually large canvases or reduce the CSS display size when necessary.
- Redrawing after every resize is correct but can be expensive. Debounce application-level layout updates and render only the current scene.
- Keep image loading asynchronous and wait for the
loadevent before drawing; otherwise the source may have zero usable dimensions. - Use smoothing quality as a preference, not as a cross-browser pixel-identical contract.
- For repeated exports, render at the final export dimensions rather than scaling a small on-screen canvas snapshot.
FAQ
Does turning off image smoothing make an image sharper?
It makes enlarged pixels retain hard edges. That is appropriate for pixel art, but it does not restore missing detail and usually looks worse for photographs.
Why does my canvas look fine at 100% zoom but blurry on another monitor?
The display’s device-pixel ratio may differ. Recompute the backing dimensions from the measured CSS size and current window.devicePixelRatio, then redraw.
Can imageSmoothingQuality force the same result in every browser?
No. It is a quality preference; browser implementations may choose different filters.
Why did my drawing disappear after I changed canvas.width?
Changing either bitmap dimension clears the canvas and resets its drawing state. Reapply your transform and render the scene again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off image smoothing make an image sharper?
It preserves hard pixel edges for pixel art, but it cannot add detail and is generally unsuitable for photographs.
Why is the canvas clear after resizing?
Changing the bitmap dimensions clears the canvas and resets its context state; configure the transform again and redraw.
