Start with the simple checks: make sure both radios are on, charged, loud enough to hear, and in normal two-way mode. Then match their channel and any privacy-code settings, test each direction separately, and try again closer together in an open area. If the problem follows one radio after those checks, consult that model’s manual or an authorized service provider rather than opening or modifying it.
1. Check power, volume, and operating mode
- Turn on both radios and raise the volume. Check each battery indicator if the radio has one.
- Check the power source. For removable batteries, confirm they are seated in the orientation shown by the polarity marks. Recharge an installed battery pack with its intended charger and check that the charging contacts are seated correctly.
- Exit special modes. Select a normal two-way radio channel, not NOAA/weather mode or scanning. Check whether keypad lock is enabled; some radios limit controls while locked.
These are model-dependent controls. For example, Midland’s LXT600 guide describes its battery and TX/RX indicators and PTT operation, while its T60 guide lists battery orientation, depleted batteries, charging contacts, and keypad lock among troubleshooting checks.

2. Match channel and signaling settings
Set both radios to compatible operating frequencies, using the channel/frequency table in each model’s manual. A matching number on the displays does not necessarily mean the radios use the same frequency: numbering can differ across models, radio families, and services.

As a test, turn the code off on both radios if their menus allow it. A code mismatch can keep a receiver’s speaker quiet even when a signal is present. Midland explains that its privacy codes filter which transmissions open the speaker; they do not encrypt a conversation or prevent other radios from hearing it. 3. Test transmitting and receiving in both directions
- Have one person press and hold PTT (push-to-talk) and speak in a normal voice near the microphone. On the Midland LXT600, the manufacturer recommends speaking about 2–3 inches from the mic; follow your own model’s instructions.
- Check whether the transmitting radio’s TX indicator appears. On the other radio, listen for audio and check whether its RX indicator responds.
- Swap roles and repeat the test so each radio tries to transmit and receive.
A TX icon shows that the radio indicates transmission; it does not prove the other radio can receive it. If one unit fails only when transmitting, check its PTT operation, microphone opening, battery condition, and model instructions. If it fails only when receiving, recheck volume, mode, code settings, and the speaker or earpiece path. These clues can narrow the problem but cannot confirm an internal fault remotely.
4. Rule out distance and obstructions
Retest with the radios close together in an open area, holding them upright and away from your body. Move away from buildings and other obstructions. Range claims are not a reliable troubleshooting promise: terrain, obstructions, and interference can reduce performance. Midland’s LXT600 guide identifies range and obstructions as reception checks, and the Motorola T200 user guide also cautions that terrain and interference affect range.

5. Use the symptoms to choose the next check

6. Replace batteries or seek service only when indicated
Buy a replacement battery only after checking the exact radio model and its specified battery type. For instance, Midland lists three AAA alkaline batteries or a Midland NiMH pack for the LXT600; that specification does not apply to other radios. Use the manufacturer-specified type and confirm compatibility with the exact model.

For U.S. FRS radios, FCC rules allow battery replacement with types specified by the manufacturer; other internal maintenance and repairs must comply with FCC requirements. FCC rules also require an FRS antenna to be integral and non-removable, so do not extend or swap an FRS handheld antenna. These points apply to U.S. FRS equipment, not every radio service or country.
