An always-on stream is not listed by YouTube as a reason viewers cannot join a channel membership. A missing Join button is more likely to involve the channel’s eligibility or membership settings, the viewer’s account or location, or the particular video page or platform. India is not categorically excluded: YouTube publishes membership prices in Indian rupees. First work out whether the button is missing or checkout is failing, then check the relevant cause.
First identify what is failing
Ask an affected viewer to describe what happens, not just whether they “can’t join.” A Join button that is absent points to a different set of checks than a button that opens checkout but produces a payment error.

YouTube says the Join button only appears on eligible watch pages. Its guidance names causes such as memberships not being enabled, an unsupported viewer or creator region, a Made for Kids video, and platform or watch-page limitations. Confirm the channel qualifies
YouTube’s current monetization overview lists the following threshold for channel memberships: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Other restrictions apply, including age, creator location, Made for Kids status and agreeing to the Commerce Product Module. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s monetization overview; meeting the numerical threshold alone does not guarantee eligibility.

Verify memberships are available and turned on in Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and look for the Memberships tab. If it is unavailable, check channel eligibility and restrictions.
- If the channel has been accepted into the YouTube Partner Program recently, allow for the membership review and activation process; YouTube says this can take up to two days after YPP acceptance.
- Confirm that memberships are enabled and that the channel has accepted the Commerce Product Module. YouTube requires that module for membership revenue.

Test a different page or device
The Join button may not appear on every platform or every eligible channel watch page. YouTube gives videos claimed by certain music partners as an example of watch pages where the button may not appear. That makes a single live page a poor test of whether memberships work across the channel.

- Ask the viewer to open the channel homepage and look for the Join option there.
- Have them try the channel’s URL with
/joinappended. For example, if the channel URL ishttps://www.youtube.com/@ChannelName, tryhttps://www.youtube.com/@ChannelName/join. - If the button is still absent, try joining from a computer rather than the app or device used for the live stream. YouTube provides separate guidance for joining on a computer and Android.
- Compare the results: if Join appears from the channel page or another device but not on the live watch page, the issue is likely specific to that page or platform—not proof that the channel’s memberships are disabled.
For Indian viewers, distinguish availability from payment trouble
YouTube publishes a country-specific channel-membership price table for India, so India is not categorically excluded as a market. Its revised India table lists ₹59 for a membership level corresponding to USD $0.99. YouTube says revised pricing has been rolling out gradually since May 2025, so viewers may see different prices depending on when they joined. Check the current India membership price table rather than assuming every viewer sees the same amount.

YouTube says the viewer must be at least 18, signed in, and in a region where memberships are available; creator location and channel eligibility also matter. If the Join button is present but payment does not complete, use YouTube’s billing and payment guidance. It notes that viewers in India may need to verify or re-enter payment details to keep recurring memberships active under RBI eMandate requirements, and that some banks may not support recurring payments. That is a checkout or recurring-billing issue, not evidence that Indian viewers generally cannot join.

Does the always-on stream itself block memberships?
YouTube’s published troubleshooting guidance does not say that a stream’s continuous duration or always-on status hides the Join button or changes channel-membership eligibility. YouTube separately describes how a new-member message may appear in live chat when someone joins during a channel’s live stream. The available guidance therefore does not establish stream duration as the cause; diagnose the page, platform, viewer and channel instead.
