An archived Android app usually will not open because Android removed the app’s software while keeping its icon and app data. The icon is dimmed and normally carries an archive overlay. Tap that icon and approve the reinstall. If that fails, try the app’s App info page in Settings or its listing in Google Play. Restoration requires the app store to be installed, the app to remain available for download, and enough free storage on the phone.
What “archived” means on Android
Archiving is a space-saving state, not the same as uninstalling an app permanently. Android removes the archived app’s software, permissions and temporary files, and stops its notifications. It retains the app icon and the app’s data so that you can restore the app later.

Because the executable software is gone, tapping the archived icon cannot launch the app immediately. Android must download and install the software again first. A faded or dimmed icon with an archive overlay is the visual clue that this is what happened.
Google’s official description is precise: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” The wording explains both symptoms: the icon remains, but the app does not open until its software is restored.

Restore the app from its faded icon
This is the quickest recovery route when the archived icon is still on your home screen or in the app drawer.
- Find the dimmed icon for the app. Look for the archive overlay that distinguishes it from a normal shortcut.
- Tap the icon once. Android should display a prompt to reinstall or restore the app.
- Accept the prompt and wait for Android to download the app and put its software back on the device.
- Open the icon again after installation finishes.
If Android asks you to manage storage instead of completing the reinstall, the phone does not currently have enough free space for the download and installation. Remove or move files you no longer need, then repeat the icon-restore process. Google advises managing storage but does not state one universal amount of free space that every archived app requires; the amount varies with the app, its update and the device.
Do not treat the faded icon as a broken shortcut. It is the retained entry point Android uses to recover the app, provided the required store and download are still available.

Use Settings when the icon route does not work
Android’s labels vary by phone maker and Android release, but Google lists the app’s information page in Settings as an alternate unarchive route.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (on some phones this may be called Apps & notifications or a similar label).
- Select the archived app from the installed-app list.
- On the app’s App info page, use the option Android provides to restore or reinstall the app.
- Let the installation complete, then launch the app from the App info page or its icon.
If the app is not shown in the list, check the deleted-app procedure below rather than assuming that the icon is merely hidden. An archived app normally remains represented on the device; a completely missing entry can indicate that it was deleted.
Restore it from the app’s Google Play page
The third route is the app’s details page in Google Play. Search for the app by its exact name, open its listing and follow the install or restore control shown there. This route is useful when the home-screen icon was removed or the Settings page does not expose a restore control.
The standard archive process depends on the app store being installed on the phone and on the archived app still being available to download from that store. If Google Play is absent, disabled or otherwise unavailable, Android cannot use the normal store-based restoration path. If the developer or store has removed the app from distribution, its listing may no longer offer an install option. Google’s archive instructions do not provide a universal substitute for an app that is no longer offered by the store.

Why an archived app may still fail to reinstall
The phone is short on storage
Archiving removes the app’s software, but restoring it still requires space for a fresh download and installation. A phone can therefore archive an app successfully and later be unable to restore it after storage has filled up.
- Follow Android’s storage-management prompt when it appears.
- Delete files you no longer need or move personal files elsewhere.
- Retry the installation from the faded icon, Settings or the app’s Google Play page.
There is no single storage threshold that can be applied to every app or every Android device. Avoid relying on a generic “you need X gigabytes” rule; the relevant requirement is the space Android reports for that particular installation.
The app store is not installed or available
Google lists the presence of the app store as a condition for the normal unarchive process. On a device without the required store, or on one where it has been disabled or cannot be used, the faded icon cannot complete the ordinary reinstall flow. The Settings and store routes may both be unavailable until the store itself is available again.
The app is no longer downloadable
Archiving preserves the icon and data, not a permanent copy of the app’s installer. If the app has been delisted or is otherwise no longer available to download, Android has nothing to retrieve through the standard process. The official archive guidance does not promise a separate recovery method in that situation, so the key check is whether the app’s current store page still offers installation.

Google notes that some archive steps work only on Android 15 and later and that certain functions depend on supported device hardware. A manufacturer’s software build can also use different menu names or place the controls elsewhere. If an instruction does not match what you see, use the equivalent Apps or App info screen on your phone and consult the device manufacturer for hardware-specific behavior.
When the icon has disappeared: check whether the app was deleted
An archived app normally leaves a dimmed icon. If you cannot find an icon at all, Google says the app may have been deleted rather than archived. Deleted apps require a normal reinstall, and the route is different.
- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile picture or account button.
- Choose Manage apps and device.
- Open the Manage tab.
- Change the filter to This device, then select Not installed.
- Find the app and choose Install or Enable, depending on the state Google Play reports.
If you originally purchased the app, sign in with the same Google Account used for that purchase. A different account may not show the entitlement or the expected reinstall option. The deleted-app route is also the correct place to look if the home-screen shortcut was manually removed while the app itself was no longer present.

Archived versus deleted: identify the state first
| What you observe | Likely state | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| A dimmed icon with an archive overlay remains | Archived | Tap the icon and approve reinstall; use Settings > Apps or the app’s Google Play details page if needed. |
| No icon can be found, but the app appears under Google Play’s Not installed list | Deleted or removed from the device | Google Play > profile > Manage apps and device > Manage > This device > Not installed, then choose Install or Enable. |
| The app is not in the Not installed list or its store page has no install control | It may be unavailable to that account, device or store | Confirm the Google Account, device compatibility and whether the app is still offered for download. |
The icon is the first diagnostic clue, but the store listing is the decisive check for current availability. Archiving retains local data and the icon; it does not guarantee that the publisher will continue distributing the app.
Stop Android from automatically archiving this app
If Android archived the app because it was unused and you want to keep its software installed, turn off the unused-app management setting for that app:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app you want to keep installed.
- Turn off Manage app if unused.
The setting controls automatic handling of an unused app. Google explicitly notes that disabling it does not prevent you from archiving the app manually later. Menu wording and placement can differ by Android version and manufacturer, so look for the same “Manage app if unused” control on the app’s information screen.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use the following order so that you can distinguish a missing prerequisite from a wrong diagnosis without repeatedly trying the same action.
- Look for the visual state. A dimmed icon with an archive overlay points to archiving. No icon means you should also investigate deletion.
- Try the icon. Tap it and accept the reinstall prompt. If Android reports a storage problem, free space before trying again.
- Open App info. Go to Settings > Apps, select the app and use the restore control on its App info page.
- Check Google Play. Open the app’s details page and confirm that an install or restore control is available.
- Verify the prerequisites. The app store must be present and usable, and the app must still be downloadable. If either condition is false, the standard archive recovery path may not work.
- Check for deletion. If the icon is missing, use Google Play’s Manage apps and device list, select This device > Not installed, and choose Install or Enable.
- Use the correct account. For a purchased app, use the Google Account that acquired it.
- Prevent a repeat. Once the app is restored, turn off Manage app if unused if you do not want Android to archive it automatically again.
What archiving does to permissions, notifications and data
Restoring the software does not mean the app behaved exactly as it did before archiving. During archiving, Android removes the app’s permissions and temporary files and stops its notifications. The app’s data and icon are retained, which is why restoration can return you to the existing local state rather than treating the icon as a new shortcut.

Because permissions are removed as part of archiving, check the app’s permission requests after it is restored. Android may ask again when the app first needs access to a feature. This is a consequence of the documented archive behavior, not evidence that the app’s data was necessarily erased.
Version and manufacturer differences
Archive support is not identical across every Android phone. Google’s help documentation says that some steps apply only to Android 15 and later and that supported hardware is required for certain features. Manufacturers can also rename menus, rearrange the Apps screen or provide their own storage controls.

- If you do not see Apps, look for Apps & notifications or the manufacturer’s equivalent app-management menu.
- If the exact wording Manage app if unused is absent, inspect the selected app’s App info page for an unused-app or automatic-archiving control.
- If the archive overlay or restore prompt never appears, check the phone’s Android version and ask the device manufacturer whether the hardware supports app archiving.
These differences affect labels and availability; they do not change the central diagnosis. An archived app lacks its installed software, while a deleted app generally lacks the retained archived icon as well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the normal fix cannot work
The standard restoration process has three practical prerequisites: a usable app store, a downloadable copy of the app and sufficient device storage. If storage is inadequate, free space and retry. If the store is unavailable, restore access to the store through the device’s supported settings or consult the manufacturer. If the app is no longer offered for download, the official archive instructions do not establish a general replacement procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not confuse an archived app with a damaged installation simply because its icon still appears. The icon and data are intentionally retained. The failure to open is expected until Android can reinstall the missing software.
How to verify that restoration finished
A reinstall is complete only after Android finishes downloading and installing the app, not merely when the restore prompt disappears. The faded icon should return to its normal appearance, and the app should open from the icon, its App info page or its Google Play listing. If the icon remains dimmed, repeat the check for storage, store availability and download availability rather than repeatedly tapping it.
Once the app opens, expect Android to behave as though the software has just been installed again in a few respects. Permissions were removed during archiving, so the app can request access again. Notifications were stopped while it was archived; they resume only after the app is restored and any required notification settings are enabled. These effects are separate from the retained app data.
What not to assume about an archived app
- It is not proof that the app was deleted. A dimmed icon is the normal archive marker.
- It is not a guarantee of permanent availability. Android retains local information, but the store still has to offer a downloadable version.
- It is not a fixed storage promise. Google gives no universal free-space figure; the required room depends on the app and device.
- It is not the same on every phone. Android version, supported hardware and manufacturer software affect the controls you see.
- It does not block manual archiving forever. Turning off “Manage app if unused” only stops that automatic handling.
Keeping these distinctions in mind prevents two common errors: searching the deleted-app list when a faded icon is ready to restore, and assuming an unavailable store listing can be recovered solely from the icon.

Start with the faded icon: tap it and approve the reinstall. If that route fails, use Settings > Apps > the app’s App info page or the app’s Google Play details page. Then check storage, store availability and whether the app is still downloadable. If the icon is gone, treat the app as potentially deleted and reinstall it from Google Play’s Not installed list using the original Google Account when necessary. After recovery, disable Manage app if unused if automatic archiving is not wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an archived app show an icon if it cannot open?
Android keeps the icon and app data but removes the app’s software. The dimmed icon is a shortcut for downloading the software again, not a complete installed app.
Can I restore an archived app without Google Play?
The normal restoration process requires the app store to be installed and usable. If the store is unavailable, Google’s standard archive instructions do not provide a universal replacement route.
How much free storage do I need to unarchive an app?
Google does not specify one universal amount. Free space varies with the app, its update and the device, so follow Android’s storage prompt and retry after freeing room.
What if the archived app is no longer listed in Google Play?
Archiving does not preserve a permanent installer. If the app has been delisted or is otherwise unavailable to download, the ordinary restore process may not work and Google provides no universal substitute.
How can I tell whether Android deleted the app instead?
An archived app normally has a dimmed icon with an archive overlay. If no icon remains, open Google Play > profile > Manage apps and device > Manage > This device > Not installed, then look for Install or Enable.
Why did the app ask for permissions again after restoration?
Android removes an archived app’s permissions. After reinstalling the software, the app may request access again when it needs a feature.
Will turning off “Manage app if unused” restore the app?
No. That setting prevents automatic handling of an unused app after it is installed. Restore the app first, then turn the setting off if you do not want automatic archiving; manual archiving remains possible.
Does the same fix work on every Android phone?
Not necessarily. Google says some archive steps require Android 15 or later and supported hardware. Manufacturers can also rename or relocate Apps and App info controls.
The Bottom Line
An archived app will not open until Android reinstalls its removed software. Tap the faded icon first; if needed, use Settings or Google Play. Free storage, a usable app store and a currently downloadable listing are required. If the icon is missing, reinstall from Google Play’s Not installed list and use the original Google Account for purchased apps.
