A galaxy can appear to have no central black hole because it truly lacks one, because its black hole is too quiet to detect, because gas and dust hide its radiation, or because the object is displaced from the apparent nucleus. A telescope’s non-detection is therefore a measurement limit, not automatic proof of absence.
The distinction matters most in dwarf galaxies. A 2025 Chandra study estimated that only about 33% of galaxies with stellar masses around 108–109 solar masses host a central massive black hole, compared with more than 93% of galaxies around 1011–1012 solar masses. Those are population estimates from a particular sample and model, not a verdict on every individual galaxy.

What astronomers mean when they say a galaxy has “no black hole”
Several different statements can be compressed into that phrase. Astronomers may mean that no central massive black hole has been detected, that no actively accreting source is visible, that the available observations exclude a certain range of black-hole masses, or that statistical modeling indicates many galaxies in a population probably never formed one. These are not equivalent conclusions.

Most direct searches instead look for consequences of its presence: hot gas spiraling inward and producing X-rays or radio waves, unusually fast motions of stars and gas around a compact mass, or gravitational lensing of a background star. If the relevant consequence is weak, blocked, outside the field of view, or below an instrument’s resolution, the object can remain unseen.

The term “central” also needs care. The optical center of a galaxy is defined by its stars and light distribution. A black hole can be offset from that point after a merger or while wandering through the galaxy’s halo. Searching only the brightest central pixel can miss an object elsewhere.
What the large Chandra study found
NASA reported in 2025 on a team that analyzed more than 1,600 galaxies observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory over more than two decades. The sample ranged from galaxies with more than ten times the Milky Way’s mass to dwarf systems whose stellar masses were below a few percent of the Milky Way’s. An accreting central black hole can stand out as a compact X-ray source, so the team compared the number of detected sources across galaxy masses.
Large galaxies frequently showed the expected nuclear X-ray sources. Low-mass galaxies showed far fewer. Some of that decline is expected: smaller black holes generally capture less gas and therefore produce fainter accretion emission. The study team modeled that loss of sensitivity and still found an additional shortage of X-ray sources in the smallest galaxies. They interpreted the remaining deficit as evidence that many low-mass galaxies genuinely do not contain central massive black holes.
| Host-galaxy stellar mass | Estimated black-hole occupation | How to interpret the figure |
|---|---|---|
| About 108–109 solar masses | About 33% | Estimate from the Chandra-based population analysis; it is not a census of every dwarf galaxy. |
| About 1011–1012 solar masses | Greater than 93% (reported as a 2-sigma lower limit) | Estimate for massive galaxies in the study’s mass range, with the stated statistical confidence. |
Fan Zou, the University of Michigan lead author, said, “It’s important to get an accurate black hole head count in these smaller galaxies.” Co-author Elena Gallo said the Chandra analysis indicates “there really are fewer black holes in these smaller galaxies than in their larger counterparts.” Their wording describes an inference from a sample and sensitivity model, not a rule that applies without exception.

Five reasons a galaxy can look empty
1. The galaxy may genuinely have no central massive black hole
Occupation fraction is the probability that a galaxy of a given type and mass contains a central massive black hole. The Chandra result suggests that this probability is substantially lower in dwarf galaxies than in massive systems. In a small galaxy, a null result can therefore be the expected outcome of true absence rather than a failed observation.
This conclusion is strongest when the analysis includes the telescope’s exposure time, background noise, distance, and the expected brightness distribution of black holes that are present. If the observed number of sources is still too low after those effects are modeled, the population-level evidence for genuine absence becomes stronger. It still cannot identify which named dwarf galaxy lacks a black hole.
2. A black hole may be present but almost inactive
Accretion powers most electromagnetic signs used in black-hole searches. Gas must lose angular momentum and fall inward; as it is compressed and heated, it can radiate strongly in X-rays and other wavelengths. A black hole with little nearby gas may produce almost none of that radiation.
Lower-mass black holes are especially difficult in this respect. Their gravitational reach is smaller, and the amount of gas they can capture may be low. A Chandra non-detection therefore places a limit on luminous accretion during the observation, not on the existence of a completely quiet object. Long exposures improve sensitivity, but they do not make a non-accreting black hole shine.

3. Gas and dust may block the signal
Material around a nucleus can absorb or scatter radiation before it reaches Earth. NASA has summarized an estimate that about 35% of supermassive black holes are heavily obscured by gas and dust. In the most obscured cases, even low-energy X-rays can be blocked. The percentage describes obscuration among supermassive black holes; it is not the fraction of galaxies that lack black holes.
An apparently dark nucleus can therefore require observations at several wavelengths. Harder X-rays, infrared emission from warmed dust, radio measurements, or gravitational effects may reveal activity that a soft-X-ray image misses. No single wavelength provides a universal guarantee.
4. The object may be outside the apparent center
Galaxy mergers can produce a pair of black holes whose final coalescence takes time. Interactions can also kick a black hole away from the stellar nucleus, while gravitational encounters can leave a massive object wandering through the halo. Simulations and reviews discuss this possibility particularly for dwarf galaxies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn off-center black hole may be even harder to detect than a nuclear one. The surrounding gas density can be low, so accretion is weak, and the object may be projected against unrelated stars or diffuse emission. A survey restricted to the central aperture can miss it entirely. This is a plausible explanation for some individual galaxies, not a universal explanation for every null result.

5. The observation may not be sensitive to the relevant mass, location, or signal
Distance, angular resolution, exposure time, detector background, and the galaxy’s own X-ray binaries all affect whether a compact source can be separated from its surroundings. A source can fall below the detection threshold, blend with another source, or lie outside the instrument’s useful field.
The same limitation applies to other techniques. Stellar-dynamical measurements need enough spatial resolution to see the black hole’s sphere of influence. Gas-dynamical measurements can be complicated by turbulence and outflows. A lensing event may be rare and temporary. “Not detected” always means “not detected under these observing conditions and assumptions.”
How different observations test the question
| Method | What a positive result indicates | What a null result leaves open |
|---|---|---|
| X-ray or radio accretion search | Gas is falling toward a compact object and releasing energy. | A quiet, weakly fed, obscured, or too-distant black hole could remain. |
| Stellar motions | Stars respond to the gravity of an unusually concentrated central mass. | The black hole may be too small for the available resolution, or stellar motions may be dominated by the surrounding galaxy. |
| Gas motions | Rotating or flowing gas requires a compact gravitational source. | Turbulence, pressure, and non-circular flows can mask the dynamical signature. |
| Multiwavelength imaging | Combining bands can uncover activity hidden at one wavelength. | An object with little accretion can remain electromagnetically faint in every band. |
| Microlensing | A compact object bends and magnifies light from a background star, revealing its mass even if it emits little light. | The alignment must occur, and the event can be difficult to recognize or measure precisely. |
NASA’s report on a lone Milky Way black-hole candidate illustrates the lensing approach: an isolated object can be inferred from its gravitational effect on a background star rather than from an accretion disk. That method is complementary to X-ray surveys because it does not require the black hole to be feeding.
How to evaluate a particular galaxy
If you are reading that a named galaxy has “no central black hole,” check the claim in this order:
Best Value
- Identify the exact claim. Is the paper reporting no X-ray source, no dynamical evidence, a statistical occupation estimate, or an upper limit on black-hole mass? The wording determines what has actually been ruled out.
- Check the galaxy’s mass and distance. A dwarf galaxy has a different expected occupation rate and a fainter target than a massive galaxy. Distance also changes the physical scale represented by each image pixel.
- Review the sensitivity limit. Find the faintest X-ray or radio source the observation could detect, the exposure duration, and the assumed spectrum. A black hole below that luminosity remains possible.
- Ask whether obscuration was considered. If the nucleus contains substantial gas and dust, a soft-X-ray non-detection is weaker evidence than a result that combines harder X-rays, infrared, or radio data.
- Look beyond the nucleus. Search for displaced compact sources, a secondary nucleus, or a wandering object in the inner halo. A central aperture alone does not test the off-center scenario.
- Seek an independent gravitational test. Stellar or gas dynamics can reveal mass without bright accretion, while a microlensing event can expose an isolated compact object. Agreement among independent methods is stronger than one missing emission line.
Why dwarf galaxies matter for black-hole origins
The occupation pattern is not merely a cataloging issue. It constrains how the first black holes formed. One broad idea is that a very massive early gas cloud collapsed directly into a black hole thousands of times the Sun’s mass. Another is that black holes began as the remnants of massive stars and then grew through accretion and mergers.
If massive seeds formed preferentially in the largest early galaxies, today’s low-mass galaxies would often never have received one. A low occupation fraction in dwarfs is therefore more naturally compatible with a scenario in which rare, massive seeds appeared only in selected environments. A remnant-seed model could also produce a low fraction if early stellar evolution, kicks, or later growth were inefficient, so the observation does not settle the debate.
Anil Seth of the University of Utah summarized the authors’ interpretation by saying that formation of big black holes is expected to be rarer because it occurs preferentially in the most massive galaxies being formed. That is a proposed explanation of the population trend, not a final consensus about seed formation.

- “No bright X-ray source” means “no black hole.” It actually means no source above that observation’s X-ray sensitivity, unless additional evidence closes the quiet and obscured possibilities.
- Applying a population percentage to one galaxy. A 33% occupation estimate means roughly one-third in the modeled mass range, not that astronomers can label any particular dwarf as empty from its mass alone.
- Assuming every black hole sits at the optical center. Mergers and gravitational interactions can leave a black hole displaced.
- Confusing occupation with activity. Occupation asks whether a black hole exists; activity asks whether it is currently accreting enough to shine.
- Ignoring the mass range. A survey sensitive to a million-solar-mass object may not exclude a much smaller one, and a result for 108–109-solar-mass galaxies cannot be transferred directly to 1011–1012-solar-mass systems.
Bottom line
A galaxy can look as though it has no central black hole for four broad reasons: it may never have formed one, it may host a quiet object whose accretion is too faint, gas and dust may hide its emission, or the black hole may be displaced from the visible nucleus. The 2025 Chandra analysis strengthens the first explanation for many low-mass galaxies by finding fewer X-ray sources than dim accretion alone predicts, while also showing why careful sensitivity modeling is essential. For any individual galaxy, the most reliable answer comes from combining emission searches with dynamical, multiwavelength, off-center, and—when geometry permits—lensing evidence.
