CalMac’s MV Caledonian Isles aborted its planned berthing at Greenock Ocean Terminal on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, after wind strength and direction combined with limited manoeuvring space at the allocated berth made a safe approach impossible. With no alternative berth available, the ferry remained at sea overnight, seeking shelter off Arran’s north-west coast. The disruption affected crew rest and the following day’s sailings.
Why did the ferry abort its berthing attempt?
CalMac’s explanation, quoted by The National, was that wind strength and direction, combined with restricted manoeuvring space within the allocated berth at Greenock Ocean Terminal, meant the vessel could not berth safely. The crew aborted the attempt rather than continue an unsafe approach.
The report gives no measured wind speed or other technical detail about the conditions. It does not establish that the ferry was stuck, nor does it identify the vessel’s age as a cause.
Which ferry was involved, and where did it go?
The vessel was MV Caledonian Isles, serving the Arran route in the Troon–Brodick context. CalMac had planned to move it to Greenock because weather conditions ruled out berthing at Troon or Brodick, according to The National’s 29 September report. With no alternative berth available at Greenock, the ferry stayed at sea overnight seeking shelter off Arran’s north-west coast.

What happened to sailings on Wednesday, 30 September?
The National reported that CalMac aimed to berth the Caledonian Isles at Brodick when conditions allowed. An 11:30 sailing to Brodick was planned, subject to the vessel first berthing successfully at Troon. CalMac said the overnight disruption affected crew hours of rest, so the next day’s scheduled service would be disrupted to allow the crew their compulsory rest.
Strong southerly winds also left further departures liable to disruption or cancellation. The report said MV Alfred, the second vessel serving Troon–Brodick, was due to operate its 09:20 sailing from Troon as scheduled, with later services still subject to the forecast. These were plans reported for 30 September 2026, not a current timetable.
