Call of Duty restarting can mean the game closes and relaunches, crashes to a desktop or console dashboard, repeats a launcher update, or causes the entire PC or console to reboot. Those are different problems, and the right next step depends on which one you see, which Call of Duty release you play, and your platform. Activision’s guidance for specific games recommends checking updates, files or cached data, ventilation, and—on PC—system requirements, graphics drivers, and interfering background apps. These are troubleshooting checks, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix.
First identify what is restarting
Watch what happens when the problem occurs. Does only Call of Duty close? Does the launcher return to an update or file-check step? Or does the whole computer or console power down and start again? Note the game title, platform, any error message, and whether the issue happens during startup or gameplay. That information helps you choose the relevant official support instructions rather than treating every restart as the same fault.

- Game closes or crashes: The game exits to the desktop or console dashboard, or closes and relaunches. Activision’s support pages describe crashes and freezes as having a variety of possible causes.
- Update or file-check loop: The launcher repeatedly downloads, checks, or applies files. That differs from a game crash; follow the launcher’s and the exact game release’s installation guidance.
- Full system reboot: The PC or console itself restarts. A game crash guide cannot establish the cause of a system-wide reboot. If it continues, use the platform maker’s support channel.
Use guidance for your specific Call of Duty release
Support steps and menus can vary by game and platform. Activision’s crash guidance for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare covers PS4, Xbox One, and PC; its separate Modern Warfare II guidance has its own recommendations. For a newer release, start at its current official support page—for example, the Black Ops 6 support hub, which lists installation, known-issue, and PC troubleshooting resources. Check the page for current instructions rather than assuming a menu path from another release still applies.

- Install current system software. Check for console system updates and install any available update, following the instructions for your console model.
- Check the console’s placement. Make sure it has adequate airflow and is in a cool, well-ventilated location. This is a basic check, not proof that overheating is the cause.
- Review game data and cache guidance. Activision’s cache and file-clearing article explains console-specific options. Follow the current instructions for your console and game; avoid deleting files unless you understand what the step removes.
- Retry and record the result. If the game still crashes, note when it happens and any error code before moving to the official game or console support route.
Checks for a crash or freeze on PC
- Confirm the PC meets the game’s minimum requirements. Compare your hardware and operating system with the requirements listed for the exact release. Do not assume one Call of Duty title has the same requirements as another.
- Update the graphics driver. Activision’s Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare II guidance recommends using the recommended graphics-driver version for the game.
- Close background applications. Some third-party overlays, input-remapping tools, or recording software can interfere with gameplay or starting the game, according to Activision’s Modern Warfare guidance. Close relevant apps temporarily and test again.
- Verify the game files. Activision’s general cache and file-clearing instructions recommend verifying game files on PC. Use the steps applicable to your game and launcher.
- Check airflow. Keep the PC in a cool, ventilated place, as Activision’s title-specific guidance advises. This check alone cannot confirm that heat is responsible.
Why cache and game files are worth checking
Activision says corrupted temporary cached data might contribute to connectivity problems, freezes, or slow or unsuccessful game loads. Its general guidance suggests clearing console cache or verifying game files on PC as initial troubleshooting steps. That makes cache or file verification reasonable checks, but it does not establish that corrupted data caused a particular restart.

When to contact support
If the crash continues after you have followed the relevant instructions for your exact game and platform, contact the platform’s support channel or consult the game’s official support page. Activision’s cited crash pages treat a possible console issue as something to consider after other checks, not as a confirmed diagnosis. Include the game version, platform, error message, what restarts, and which steps you tried. If the entire system reboots rather than only the game, make that distinction clear when asking for help.

Without the exact release, platform, error message, and observed behavior, it is not possible to determine whether the cause is game files, system software, an application conflict, ventilation, or something else. The recommended order is to identify the symptom, follow the current release-specific steps, and escalate if those checks do not resolve it.
