The camera records the light reaching it from a particular combination of illumination and viewing angles—not one universal, angle-independent color. For meaningful photographs, control and document those angles, keep camera settings and processing consistent, and describe the result as the wing’s appearance under those conditions.
Why a butterfly’s color shifts as you move
Some butterfly colors arise partly from wing-scale microstructures rather than pigment alone. Those structures interact with light, so changing the direction of illumination or observation can alter the spectrum and brightness reflected toward the camera.

Thin-film interference can shift hue
In the mother-of-pearl butterfly, the lower lamina of the scales acts as a thin optical film. Interference in that layer produces angle-dependent pink structural color; measurements report a shift in reflected spectral shape from pink toward yellow as illumination and observation move from normal to more oblique angles. The degree of polarization also changes. The thin-film study describes this specific mechanism; it should not be assumed to explain every butterfly’s color.
Different scale structures produce different effects
Structural color is not one uniform mechanism. Research across ten butterfly species describes hue and intensity as outcomes of interacting interference, diffraction, absorption, and scattering. The measured species varied: some changed little, while others showed a conspicuous flash at particular angles. The comparative study therefore supports treating angle response as species- and structure-dependent.

A 2026 study comparing four Morpho species reports that multilayered scale ridges produce structural color, but reflectance and display direction differ among species. Overlapping scales broaden the angular range over which color is displayed, while ridge orientation influences directionality and polarization. One Morpho’s flash or hue shift is not a rule for all butterflies. The four-species study details those differences.
How to photograph the changing appearance
First decide whether the photograph should demonstrate the color shift or serve as a repeatable reference. A sequence that changes angles is useful for showing iridescence; a reference image needs a fixed, documented setup. Neither approach makes one angle the butterfly’s sole true color.

For a sequence that shows the shift
- Keep the butterfly or specimen and the light source in place.
- Change only one variable at a time: either the camera’s viewing angle or the light’s angle.
- Label each view and record the camera position, illumination direction, and light source so another person can understand the conditions.
This is practical advice inferred from angle-dependent measurements and controlled research setups, not a universally validated consumer-camera protocol.

- Keep the light position, camera position, exposure, and image processing consistent across photographs.
- Record the species or specimen, which wing surface is shown, illumination angle and source, viewing angle, and whether a polarizer was used and how it was oriented.
- Include a neutral reference if your workflow supports one, and explain how the image was made.
These controls make comparisons more interpretable; they do not establish a standardized way to convert ordinary camera RGB values into objectively accurate butterfly color across different species, lights, cameras, and displays. The available sources do not validate such a universal recipe.

A specialized Morpho photography example
A 2026 methods section reports photographing dominant dorsal wing areas with a Nikon D70 and an HD-130 macro-LED ring flash. For polarized iridescence, the researchers positioned specimens horizontally, illuminated them at an incident angle of approximately 60 degrees, and placed a linear polarizing filter before the camera at the mirroring angle. This is a documented research setup for a particular application, not a default setting for every butterfly or photograph. The same work notes that hue and brightness varied under oblique illumination. Read the reported methods.
When macro gear helps—and when it does not
A macro lens can help show close details of wing scales. Peer-reviewed butterfly imaging work reports macro objectives, and the Morpho study used a macro LED ring flash. Such equipment is optional: it can help capture detail but cannot remove the underlying dependence on viewing and lighting geometry. The macro-imaging study provides an example of this kind of equipment use.

What to compare when judging two images
Before treating differences between two photographs as a change in the butterfly itself, check whether the capture conditions match. Relevant factors include:
- Camera or viewing angle.
- Illumination angle and light source.
- Whether a polarizer was used, and its orientation.
- Species and wing surface.
- Whether exposure and image processing were held constant.
A demonstration intentionally varies geometry to reveal changing appearance. A standardized color measurement is a different task and requires a defined measurement method; a visually compelling photograph alone does not establish one.

What the measurements establish
An Optical Society study’s abstract states, “The color of the wing changes with the angle of viewing.” Its historical 1968 report measured reflectance at seven viewing angles and gives luminance and CIE coordinates for those views. Those angle-specific results are more informative than selecting one value and presenting it as a general statistic for butterfly photography. See the angle-specific measurements.
