Why Bots Are Scraping ChatGPT and Perplexity: What the New Rankings Show

Businesses may be scraping AI platforms to see how their products and brands appear in generated answers. A Decodo analysis reported by TechRadar on October 5, 2026 placed ChatGPT third and Perplexity fifth among websites with the most observed scraping activity. The figures describe activity in Decodo’s analysis—not all web traffic or scraping across the internet.

What the reported rankings say

According to Decodo’s analysis, as reported by TechRadar, TikTok accounted for 18% of the observed activity, ChatGPT for 14%, and Perplexity for 10%. The reported ranking placed Google second and Amazon eighth; TikTok, Google, and Amazon were returning entries. Seven of the top ten sites were new entrants, while Walmart, eBay, and Airbnb dropped out.

Website Reported rank Share of activity observed in Decodo’s analysis
TikTok 1 18%
Google 2 Not stated for TikTok, Google, or Amazon in the TechRadar article
ChatGPT 3 14%
Perplexity 5 10%
Amazon 8 Not stated for TikTok, Google, or Amazon in the TechRadar article

All ranks and percentages in this table are attributed to Decodo by TechRadar; they are not independently verified raw data. The article does not provide the underlying report’s sampling method, timeframe, or geographic coverage. The percentages therefore should not be read as shares of all internet traffic, all scraping, or scraping at every business.

Why scrape AI platforms?

One possible reason is to monitor what AI systems say about companies and products. TechRadar describes businesses checking how ChatGPT ranks products against competitors, how it describes a company, how often it mentions a brand, and which sources it cites. These are proposed use cases, not a demonstrated breakdown of who operated the scrapers or why.

Decodo CEO Vaidotas Juknys characterized the shift this way: “Two years ago, businesses scraped the web to see what people were searching for,” he told TechRadar. “Now they scrape AI platforms to see what people are being told. The use case for data collection is changing.”

What the change may signal

The appearance of ChatGPT and Perplexity among the leading reported targets suggests that monitoring interest may be expanding from conventional search and commerce sites to AI answer services. But the list was not limited to AI: TikTok led it, and Google and Amazon also appeared. The seven reported new entrants point to changing targets across several kinds of site, rather than establishing that all scraping has shifted toward AI.

Juknys also forecast that “Next year the agents might be doing the deciding instead of just reading the answers.” That is a prediction about what could come next, not a finding measured by the reported ranking.

What these numbers can—and cannot—tell you

  • They can show: which sites featured in the reported ranking and the reported shares for TikTok, ChatGPT, and Perplexity within Decodo’s observed activity.
  • They cannot establish: how much scraping happens across the internet, whether activity rose over a specific period, which kinds of bots were involved, or how the pattern differs by country or industry.
  • They do not prove motive: brand and product monitoring is a plausible business use, but the article does not identify that as the reason for every scrape.

For a business, the practical implication is that AI answer visibility—how a service describes a brand, compares its products, and cites sources—may be worth monitoring alongside conventional search visibility. The reported ranking alone does not establish how common that practice is or which monitoring approach is effective.
