Bose headphones need batteries to power features such as active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth, and, depending on the model, sound processing. ANC uses microphones and electronics to monitor surrounding sound and counter it. If the battery dies, some models can still play audio through a wired connection in passive mode, but powered features may stop working. The exact behavior and battery type depend on the model.
What the battery powers
ANC is an active process, not just a feature of the ear cushions. Microphones pick up surrounding sound, and powered electronics process it to reduce the noise you hear. Bose explains that noise-cancelling headphones require energy for this technology. The headphones also provide some physical noise blocking through their fit, which does not require a battery.

On wireless models, the battery also powers Bluetooth and the electronics needed to receive and process audio. Controls and other features can depend on power too. Which functions remain available without a charge varies by model.
Can you use Bose headphones when the battery dies?
Sometimes. Bose says current QuietComfort Headphones can play from a connected source in passive mode after the battery is depleted. In that state, active noise cancellation and Active EQ do not work. This is a model-specific statement, not a guarantee for every Bose headphone.

Whether wired playback is possible—and what functions remain—depends on the headphone’s design and connection options. Check the owner’s guide for your exact model rather than assuming a dead battery will leave it usable as a wired headset.
Battery type depends on the model
Bose has used several battery formats across different generations. These examples show why the model name matters before buying a replacement:

| Model or guide | Battery type | What Bose says about use |
|---|---|---|
| Current QuietComfort Headphones | Built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery | Recharges over USB-C; see Bose’s product specifications and charging information. |
| QuietComfort 2 | One AAA cell | Bose specifies an alkaline cell and recommends NiMH rechargeable cells if using rechargeables. See the owner’s guide. |
| Legacy QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling guide | Two AAA cells | The guide specifies two alkaline cells. See Bose’s owner’s guide. |
| QuietComfort 3 | Dedicated rechargeable battery pack | The battery is model-specific; see the owner’s guide. |
Do not choose a battery from the QuietComfort name alone: different models use different formats. For repair or replacement questions, Bose’s repair and replacement guidance directs owners toward model-specific help. Bose advises contacting support before attempting repairs on a product still under warranty.
How long does a Bose headphone battery last?
Runtime figures are manufacturer estimates for particular models and settings, not a controlled comparison or a promise of identical results in everyday use.

| Model | Bose’s stated runtime | Charging information |
|---|---|---|
| Current QuietComfort Headphones | Up to 24 hours with noise cancelling on | Up to two hours for a full charge; a 15-minute charge provides up to four hours of playback, according to Bose’s product specifications and charging information. |
| QuietComfort Ultra Headphones | Up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off, or up to 18 hours with it on | A 15-minute charge provides up to 2.5 hours with Immersive Audio off or up to two hours with it on. See Bose’s model-specific support page. |
| Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 | Up to 20 hours of full-featured audio playback | See Bose’s product page. |
| QuietComfort 2 | Average 40 hours | Bose’s legacy owner’s guide gives this average for the model. |
| QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling (legacy guide) | Average 80 hours in the application described in the guide using two AAA alkaline cells | The guide says rechargeable cells average about half the alkaline runtime. See Bose’s owner’s guide. |
| QuietComfort 3 | Approximately 25 hours per full charge | Initial charging takes about two hours, according to the owner’s guide. |
These figures come from different product generations and source conditions, so comparing them as if they were measured in the same test would be misleading. Features enabled, listening habits, and other conditions affect runtime. Use the manual or support page for your model when planning around its battery.

Charging or replacing the battery safely
For current QuietComfort Headphones
- Check that your headphones are the current QuietComfort Headphones model, not another QuietComfort generation.
- Use the supplied USB-C cable and connect it to a computer, laptop, or wall charger, following Bose’s charging instructions.
- Allow up to two hours for a full charge. Bose states that a 15-minute charge provides up to four hours of playback under its stated conditions.
For older or different models
- Confirm the full model name and consult its owner’s guide before buying cells, a battery pack, or a charging cable.
- Follow the guide’s specified battery format and charging method; a USB-C cable is not universal across Bose headphones.
- If a rechargeable battery or built-in battery needs service, use Bose’s model-specific repair guidance. Contact support before attempting repairs if the product is under warranty.
