More tankers moving through or around the Strait of Hormuz have not yet restored the supply of affordable fuel. A Wall Street Journal report republished by Hindustan Times on October 2, 2026, said Middle Eastern crude exports had come close to prewar levels, but refined-fuel exports remained substantially lower. Meanwhile, bond yields were also responding to borrowing, debt issuance and economic demand—not oil alone.
Crude exports are recovering faster than fuel supplies
A tanker carrying crude oil is not the same thing as a shipment of gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. Crude has to be refined into those products, and disruptions at refineries or in product shipping can keep fuel tight even as crude exports improve.

The October 2 report cited estimates that put Middle East crude exports only modestly below prewar levels, while regional exports of refined products were still much further behind:

| Measure | Reported estimate | Attribution and date |
|---|---|---|
| Middle East crude exports | About 7% below prewar levels | Morgan Stanley analysts, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, 2026 |
| Regional exports of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel | Around 40% below prewar levels | J.P. Morgan, as reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, 2026 |
These are reported estimates, not independently verified measurements of every cargo. The gap helps explain why recovering crude flows have not translated into normal availability or lower prices for products people and businesses use directly.

- detailed 12-inch scale model representing a modern commercial oil tanker. This replica celebrates the "titans of trade," featuring the classic flat-deck design, complex piping systems, stern bridge superstructure, and bulbous bow found on real-world supertankers.
- Unlike standard ship models, this piece showcases the intricate network of deck piping, valves, and catwalks characteristic of liquid cargo vessels. The multi-colored design (green deck, white superstructure, black/red hull) provides an authentic industrial look without the need for painting.
- Designed as a static display piece for logistics professionals, oil and gas industry workers, merchant mariners, and naval engineers. Its sturdy, flat-bottomed hull sits stable on any desk, shelf, or bookcase, making it a perfect professional accent for a corporate office or home study.

Visible tanker traffic does not show the whole picture
Counting ships in or near Hormuz is an imperfect way to measure how much oil is reaching buyers. Some vessels switch off tracking transponders, and some cargoes change ships in ship-to-ship transfers. Threats can also prompt rerouting, while limited tanker capacity makes it harder to move cargoes reliably. The report quoted CIBC Private Wealth senior energy trader Rebecca Babin describing the flow data as potentially optimistic and inconsistent, and the overall picture as opaque.
Security risks had not disappeared: the report said the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre had reported three vessels hit by projectiles in the Strait on September 30, 2026. Such incidents help explain why market participants remained sensitive to the possibility of renewed disruption or changes in the U.S.–Iran situation.

More supply does not necessarily mean cheaper delivered oil
The cost of getting a barrel to a buyer matters as well as the number of barrels exported. A roughly 21-day supertanker voyage from the Middle East to China had recently cost the equivalent of $35 a barrel, compared with less than $7 the day before the war began, according to Argus Media as reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, 2026. Longer or less predictable routes and costly freight can therefore keep delivered crude expensive even when exports rise.
There is also a difference between a global futures benchmark and the price of a particular physical cargo. The report said the global crude-futures benchmark rose 4.4% on Thursday, October 1, to $102.31 a barrel. North Sea dated crude, a physical-market reference, fetched $127.42 a barrel that day, according to Argus Media as reported in the October 2 article. These figures describe different market measures; neither alone establishes what every buyer paid.

Refined-fuel shortages are keeping pressure on gasoline and diesel
Fuel prices can remain high when refineries, inventories or product exports are disrupted, even if crude is available. The report said the U.S. average gasoline price was above $4.41 a gallon, citing AAA on October 2, 2026. It also described New York diesel futures as having recently fetched roughly twice the price of crude, with the diesel-crude spread far beyond previously recorded levels; it did not give an exact spread value.
That squeeze can persist. In a 2026 Dallas Fed survey reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 2, 48% of surveyed energy executives expected diesel-crude spreads to take at least a year to return to 2025 levels; roughly 36% said the same about gasoline. These are respondents’ expectations, not a guarantee of how prices will move.

Oil is only one force behind the bond selloff
Bond yields reflect the returns investors demand to hold bonds. When yields rise, existing bond prices generally fall. Higher expected inflation can contribute to rising yields because investors may seek more compensation for the erosion of future purchasing power, but the October 2 report also pointed to large fiscal deficits, heavy issuance of AI-related debt and resilient economic demand. More bonds to absorb, or expectations of a strong economy, can put upward pressure on yields independently of the latest tanker count.

It also described the yield’s rise over the quarter as its steepest since 1994. Those are dated market snapshots, not live quotes. U.S. mortgage rates had moved above 7%, according to the same report. Mortgage rates do not simply equal the 10-year Treasury yield, but Treasury-market movements can influence borrowing costs across the economy.

Higher fuel costs can add to inflation concerns, while the other forces cited in the report can sustain yields even if oil flows improve. UBS Investment Bank’s Arend Kapteyn said central banks watch refined products as well as crude, and noted that products remained tight. That is an explanation of market sensitivity, not proof that any single factor caused a specific yield move.
How to read reports of a Hormuz recovery
- Check what is being counted. Crude exports, refined-product exports and visible ship traffic measure different things.
- Look at the delivered cost. Freight, route length and tanker availability can offset the benefit of higher export volumes.
- Separate the market benchmarks. A futures price, a physical crude price and a retail gasoline price are not interchangeable.
- Keep the date attached. The prices and yields above were reported on October 2, 2026, and may have changed since then.
- Do not treat yield moves as an oil-only signal. Inflation risk, government borrowing, corporate debt issuance and economic demand all matter.
