backdrop-filter: blur() can look different in two otherwise similar Puppeteer screenshots because the pixels depend on more than the CSS: Chromium’s rendering path, GPU and driver state, viewport and device scale factor, and screenshot output scale can all matter. There is no single documented cause or universal flag that guarantees headed and headless output will match. To diagnose a particular difference, compare those settings while keeping the page and capture conditions fixed.
Why the same blur can produce different pixels
A screenshot is the result of browser rendering stages, not a direct picture of the CSS declaration. Chromium separates painting and rasterization from compositing. Its documented GPU path and software-rendering path are different implementations; the software renderer uses Skia. That gives you plausible places to investigate when a blur changes, but it does not prove which stage caused a specific backdrop-filter difference.
Chromium’s compositing guide says composited CSS filters can work with its software renderer. That guide was updated in May 2014 and warns that implementation details evolve, so use it as broad architecture context—not a current guarantee for every filter or browser build. In particular, a changed blur does not by itself show that software rendering omitted all filter behavior.
The other important variable is the pixel grid. CSS pixels, device-independent pixels and physical pixels are related but not interchangeable. Device scale factor affects that relationship, and screenshot output scale can affect the final image. A blur sampled onto a different pixel grid may look different even if the page’s CSS and content are unchanged.

Check headless mode and GPU state first
Puppeteer distinguishes headless implementations. Its current troubleshooting guide says that chrome-headless-shell requires --enable-gpu to enable GPU acceleration in headless mode. The guide also notes that GPU detection depends on suitable drivers. Do not assume GPU acceleration is active just because a browser runs on a machine with a GPU, or that a flag produces the same outcome on every CI host.
- Record the browser and Puppeteer versions. Include the Chromium build, Puppeteer version, operating system, and which headless mode is used.
- Record GPU and driver diagnostics. Note whether acceleration is available in that environment rather than inferring it from the launch configuration.
- If using
chrome-headless-shell, check the GPU option. Compare a run with--enable-gpuonly on a host with appropriate drivers, and log the resulting configuration.
GPU-enabled output is not guaranteed to match headed Chrome. A comparison on one machine also does not establish what will happen on a different operating system, driver or CI host.
Make scale and capture conditions reproducible
Before attributing a difference to the blur implementation, fix the screenshot’s geometry and timing. Puppeteer’s protocol exposes device metrics, including device scale factor, and screenshot output scale. Use the same values in every run; also hold the viewport width and height constant.

- Set the same viewport dimensions.
- Set the same device scale factor.
- Set the same screenshot output scale.
- Keep the page, content behind the filtered element, fonts, animation state and capture timing identical.
These are controls for a fair visual comparison, not proof that any one factor caused the mismatch. If the filtered element reveals different content behind it, or the page is captured at a different animation frame, the resulting image is not a controlled comparison.

A practical Puppeteer comparison
Use a small reproducible page and explicitly set viewport and device scale factor. This example takes a screenshot of a local HTML fixture and reports the browser version and chosen settings. Run it under each environment you want to compare, keeping the fixture and output scale the same.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
// For chrome-headless-shell, Puppeteer's guide documents
// --enable-gpu as required to enable GPU acceleration.
// Test it only where appropriate GPU drivers are available.
args: ['--enable-gpu'],
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
const viewport = { width: 1280, height: 800, deviceScaleFactor: 1 };
await page.setViewport(viewport);
await page.goto('file:///absolute/path/to/blur-fixture.html', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle0',
});
console.log({
browser: await browser.version(),
puppeteer: require('puppeteer/package.json').version,
viewport,
headless: true,
screenshotScale: 'css',
});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'blur.png',
fullPage: false,
captureBeyondViewport: false,
scale: 'css',
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Use the Puppeteer and Chromium versions actually installed in your project; the example does not pin them. A local fixture makes it easier to keep the content stable. If the page depends on remote resources, ensure those load consistently before capture. The scale screenshot option and protocol controls are version-sensitive, so check the API for the Puppeteer version in use.

What to put in the fixture
Place the filtered element over a distinctive, static background such as alternating color bands or text. Keep the element size, blur radius, opacity and background fixed. That makes changes easier to spot than a uniform background, while still leaving the browser configuration as the variable under test.
Compare runs without over-interpreting them
Change one configuration axis at a time and preserve the output images and logs. A useful comparison matrix is:
| Axis | What to record or hold fixed |
|---|---|
| Headless implementation | Whether the run uses chrome-headless-shell or another headless mode. |
| GPU path | GPU acceleration setting and available GPU/driver diagnostics. |
| Software versions | Chromium build and Puppeteer version. |
| Viewport | Width and height in CSS pixels. |
| Device scale factor | The configured device scale factor. |
| Screenshot output scale | The screenshot scale setting. |
The documentation supports investigating rendering path and pixel scale, but it does not rank these variables by their effect on backdrop-filter. If changing one setting changes the result, report that as an observation for that environment—not a general explanation for all Puppeteer screenshots.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
The blur disappears or looks substantially weaker
First check that the content behind the filtered element is present and unchanged, then confirm browser version, headless mode, GPU and driver state. Compare a controlled run with the same scale settings. The available documentation does not establish that headless mode universally disables backdrop-filter, so do not treat the symptom alone as proof of that cause.
The blur looks sharper, softer or differently sized
Check viewport, device scale factor and screenshot output scale. Those settings change how browser coordinates map onto screenshot pixels. Make sure the filtered element and its background have the same dimensions in both runs.
Adding --enable-gpu changes nothing
Confirm that the run actually uses chrome-headless-shell, that the host has appropriate drivers, and that GPU acceleration is available in the resulting environment. The option is not a promise that every host will use the same rendering path or produce headed-equivalent pixels.

Local screenshots match, but CI screenshots do not
Compare Chromium and Puppeteer versions, operating system, headless implementation, GPU/driver state and all scale settings. Capture diagnostics from both environments. A difference between two hosts is not enough to identify a browser bug or a particular driver as the cause.
The result varies between captures on the same host
Stabilize the page before comparing: wait for the same content and fonts, use a fixed background and animation state, and capture at a consistent time. These controls reduce unrelated visual changes; they do not determine which renderer caused a persistent blur discrepancy.
What you can conclude—and what remains uncertain
The official material explains why rendering mode and pixel scale are sensible variables to record. It does not provide a controlled, current cross-version test matrix for backdrop-filter across headless modes, GPUs and drivers. It therefore cannot support claims that headless always disables the effect, that enabling GPU always fixes it, or that one launch flag makes screenshots match across machines.
For a useful bug report, include a minimal reproducible page, the two screenshots, Chromium and Puppeteer versions, operating system, headless mode, GPU/driver details, viewport, device scale factor and screenshot output scale. Describe the difference as an environment-specific rendering discrepancy unless a controlled test establishes more.
