Why Attacks Near the Strait of Hormuz Affect Global Oil Prices

Attacks or threats near the Strait of Hormuz can lift global oil prices because they put a large volume of internationally traded petroleum at risk at the same time that tankers face delays, higher insurance and longer routes. Prices can move on the expectation of fewer future barrels, before a complete closure or a measured shortage occurs. The size and persistence of any increase depends on how much traffic is actually disrupted, how long the disruption lasts, available inventories and substitute supplies, and whether markets expect shipping to resume.

There is no fixed price increase for an attack. A brief incident that leaves most tankers moving is economically different from sustained attacks that sharply reduce transit, and both differ from a prolonged closure.

Why the Strait of Hormuz matters to the oil market

Hormuz is a maritime chokepoint between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Oil loaded at terminals in Gulf states must normally pass through this narrow route to reach customers outside the region. That makes a security problem there a potential supply problem for the entire traded market, not only for countries immediately around the Gulf.

The scale of normal traffic

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that about 20 million barrels per day of crude oil and petroleum products transited the Strait in 2025. Its fact sheet lists 14.95 million barrels per day of crude and 4.93 million barrels per day of products, or 19.87 million barrels per day in total. The IEA describes that as roughly 25% of world seaborne oil trade. These figures are a 2025 baseline, not a measurement of traffic during the 2026 conflict.

Nearly 15 million barrels per day of crude represented almost 34% of global crude-oil trade in the IEA’s 2025 account. China and India together received 44% of those crude exports. Looking at all oil flows, about 80% was destined for Asia. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), using a different category and period, estimated that 89% of Hormuz crude oil and condensate went to Asian markets in the first half of 2025; China, India, Japan and South Korea together represented 74% of those flows.

Measure Estimate Period and scope
Crude plus petroleum products through Hormuz 19.87 million barrels per day (about 20 million) IEA, 2025; 14.95 million crude and 4.93 million products
Share of world seaborne oil trade About 25% IEA, 2025
Crude share of global crude trade Nearly 34% IEA, 2025
Oil flows destined for Asia About 80% IEA, 2025, all oil flows
Crude and condensate destined for Asia 89% EIA, first half of 2025; different scope from the IEA figure

Because oil is traded in a connected global market, an interruption can change the price used to value cargoes worldwide even when most physical barrels would otherwise have gone to Asian refineries.

How an attack becomes a price signal

1. Fewer immediately deliverable barrels

An attack can damage a vessel, force a tanker to wait, cause a shipping company to suspend sailings, or lead authorities to impose a temporary security restriction. Insurance may become unavailable or prohibitively expensive. Each outcome can reduce the number of barrels that buyers can count on receiving on schedule.

The EIA has noted that even a temporary blockage at a major chokepoint can delay supplies and raise shipping costs, potentially increasing world energy prices. The physical loss does not need to equal the entire normal flow: a smaller reduction can tighten the amount available for prompt delivery and make refiners compete for alternative cargoes.

2. Expectations move before the barrels disappear

Oil futures and spot transactions incorporate expectations about future supply. Traders may bid up benchmark prices when they judge that attacks could continue, that more tankers will avoid the area, or that a closure is becoming more likely. This is why a headline about a threat can affect prices even when measured exports have not yet fallen.

Conversely, a credible ceasefire, a protected shipping corridor or evidence that tankers are moving normally can remove part of that expected scarcity. The market response therefore reflects both observed flows and changing judgments about what will happen next. No universal “risk premium” can be assigned without specifying the event, time period and market measure.

3. Longer routes and higher freight costs

If ships avoid Hormuz, they may need to wait, travel around the Arabian Peninsula or use a different loading and discharge pattern. The voyage takes longer, ties up tanker capacity and consumes more fuel. Freight, insurance and financing costs rise. A buyer can face a higher delivered cost even if the crude’s benchmark price has moved only modestly.

Those costs can feed back into benchmark prices because sellers need compensation for the extra risk and because fewer available tankers can make transportation itself scarce. Alternative sea routes can add significant transit time, according to the EIA.

4. Spare production may be trapped behind the chokepoint

Producing countries may have the ability to pump additional crude, but that does not guarantee that the extra barrels can reach overseas customers. If spare production is in Gulf states whose export terminals also depend on Hormuz, the new supply remains exposed to the same bottleneck.

“The market impact would be exacerbated by the fact that, in addition disrupting shipments of oil transiting the Strait, the vast majority of the world’s spare crude oil production capacity could be made unavailable as well.”

Why an Asia-focused disruption affects a global benchmark

Benchmark crude prices are formed through transactions and expectations that connect importing regions. A refiner in Asia may bid more aggressively for a replacement cargo. That changes the opportunity cost for a seller considering whether to ship to Europe or another destination. Cargoes are redirected, grades are substituted and inventories are drawn down across regions.

The IEA therefore describes the effect of a Hormuz disruption as global even though most normal flows are Asia-bound. A shortage in one major buying region can pull barrels away from another, while higher freight costs apply to ships and routes serving many markets. The global price is the balancing signal; local prices then reflect their own taxes, currencies, refining margins and distribution costs.

What the 2026 data show—and what they do not

The EIA’s August 2026 outlook provides a dated illustration of a severe reduction in traffic. Oil and petroleum liquids transported through Hormuz averaged 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 21.6 million barrels per day in the fourth quarter of 2025 before the conflict. Those are period averages, not a claim about the exact flow on any particular day or after October 2026.

The same EIA outlook reported Brent spot prices as high as $105 per barrel on July 23, 2026, after renewed tanker attacks and a related reduction in shipments. That is an observed price and date, not a rule that every attack produces a $105 price or the same percentage increase. The response also reflected the market’s assessment of duration, alternative supplies and broader conditions at that time.

Why lost barrels do not translate one-for-one into price increases

Several buffers can absorb part of a disruption or delay the effect on benchmarks:

  • Commercial inventories: Refiners and traders can draw stored crude and products while waiting for new cargoes.
  • Emergency stocks: IEA member countries agreed in 2026 to release 400 million barrels of emergency stocks to help offset disruption. A release is temporary and depends on decisions by participating governments.
  • Bypass pipelines: Pipelines through Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can move some crude without using the Strait, but they cannot replace normal Hormuz volumes.
  • Other suppliers: Producers outside the Gulf may increase exports or redirect cargoes, subject to available production, quality compatibility and tanker capacity.
  • Refinery adjustments: Plants can change crude slates, delay maintenance, alter product yields or substitute one grade for another.
  • Demand response: Higher prices can reduce consumption, encourage efficiency and cause industrial users to switch fuels where possible.
  • Expectations of reopening: If traders believe the disruption will be short, they may rely on inventories rather than price the event as a permanent loss.

Bypass capacity estimates have different definitions

The IEA’s 2026 factsheet estimated 3.5 million to 5.5 million barrels per day of potential alternative crude-export capacity through pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. An EIA analysis published in 2025 estimated about 2.6 million barrels per day of capacity available to bypass the Strait. These figures come from different assessments, assumptions and reference periods; they should not be treated as a permanent capacity number or as a direct contradiction.

Even the higher estimate would cover only part of a roughly 20-million-barrel-per-day normal flow. Operating limits, the location of available crude, terminal capacity and the need to move refined products separately can reduce what is practically deliverable during a crisis.

Different disruptions produce different market outcomes

Event Likely physical effect How markets may respond
Threats or isolated attacks with normal traffic Higher insurance, caution and possible delays; little measured loss initially Volatility and an expectation-driven price increase that can fade if shipping continues
Short-lived attack or temporary closure Some cargoes delayed; inventories and rerouting cover part of the gap Higher prompt prices and freight, with the scale tied to duration and confidence in reopening
Sustained reduced tanker traffic Fewer barrels arrive and replacement cargoes compete across regions More persistent benchmark pressure, product-specific shortages and larger freight effects
Prolonged near-total closure Most normal seaborne flows are blocked; bypasses cover only a fraction Severe global tightening, emergency-stock releases, refinery changes and demand destruction

These are analytical categories, not forecasts. Actual results depend on the amount of traffic maintained, the products affected and the duration.

Crude, diesel, jet fuel and LNG do not react identically

“Oil” covers different markets. Crude is a refinery input; diesel and jet fuel are refined products with their own inventories, trade routes and seasonal demand. The IEA’s 2026 analysis said diesel and jet fuel were tighter and more vulnerable than aggregate global oil balances. A report that cites a stable crude supply balance may therefore miss stress in particular products.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has different contracts, vessels, terminals and consuming regions. Its exposure to a Hormuz incident must be evaluated separately from crude or petroleum products. Do not infer an LNG price change from a crude-oil statistic.

Global benchmark prices versus prices at the pump

The evidence above concerns international crude benchmarks, spot cargoes and shipping costs. A household’s gasoline or diesel price can move later and by a different amount. Refining margins, local taxes, currency exchange rates, storage, retail competition and the product mix all intervene between a crude benchmark and a pump price.

The available figures do not establish a universal time lag or a fixed percentage pass-through to consumer fuel. A higher Brent price is therefore a warning about potential energy-cost pressure, not a precise forecast of what a particular country’s drivers will pay.

How to read a new Hormuz headline

  1. Check what was actually disrupted. Distinguish a threat, a damaged vessel, insurance restrictions, reduced traffic and a confirmed closure.
  2. Identify the flow. Ask whether the report concerns crude, condensate, diesel, jet fuel, other products or LNG.
  3. Look for a measured volume and time period. A daily estimate, a monthly average and a quarterly average answer different questions.
  4. Compare the loss with available alternatives. Consider bypass pipelines, inventories, emergency stocks and exports from other producers.
  5. Separate the benchmark from local prices. Brent or another global marker is not the same as a retail fuel quote.
  6. Watch expectations. Statements about convoy protection, reopening prospects or further attacks can move prices before physical data are published.

Bottom line

Attacks near Hormuz affect global oil prices by threatening a chokepoint that carried about 20 million barrels per day in 2025, raising the cost and risk of moving replacement cargoes, and altering expectations about future supply. The effect is global because oil is priced through interconnected markets, even though most Hormuz barrels normally go to Asia. The eventual price move is determined not by the existence of an attack alone, but by the volume and duration of disrupted traffic and the ability of inventories, emergency reserves, alternate routes, other suppliers, refineries and consumers to adjust.
