1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA process that looks like Microsoft Edge is not automatically the real browser. It could be a renamed or camouflaged cryptocurrency-mining payload, but the Microsoft threat entry most often cited for this scenario does not establish an Edge filename, installation path, digital signature, command line, or campaign. It identifies Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner, a mining threat that Microsoft associates with earlier exploitation of CVE-2021-44228 (Log4Shell) in Apache Log4j 2.
That distinction changes the response. Treat a Defender alert as evidence that a potentially unwanted or malicious payload needs investigation, not as proof that the visible Edge browser itself is infected. Verify the executable, investigate persistence and post-exploitation activity, and use the response appropriate to a home PC or an organizational network.

What the official detection actually establishes
Microsoft Security Intelligence describes Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner as a cryptocurrency-mining payload. The entry was published on November 3, 2021, and updated on December 23, 2021. It says Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects and removes the threat and connects the payload with prior exploitation of CVE-2021-44228, the Log4Shell vulnerability in Apache Log4j 2.
Recommended Free Tools
The same entry recommends investigating systems where the detection appears. Its enterprise guidance includes checking for Apache and Log4j, looking for suspicious post-exploitation behavior, stopping suspicious processes, isolating affected devices, addressing compromised accounts, blocking malicious IP addresses and URLs, and applying security updates.

Why a familiar browser name can be useful camouflage
Attackers commonly choose names that blend into a busy process list. A browser process is plausible on many Windows systems, so a defender or user may overlook high CPU use, assume the process is legitimate, or close the browser without investigating how it started. A familiar name can also make a malicious process look less urgent during an initial review.
Those are general reasons for masquerading; they are not evidence that the Microsoft detection above used a particular Edge filename or path. The reliable question is not whether a process is named msedge.exe. It is whether the file, signature, launch chain, persistence, and behavior match a legitimate installation on that specific computer.

How to check whether an Edge-looking process is genuine
Perform these checks before assuming that the browser is malicious or authentic. A single clue is rarely conclusive, and the Microsoft threat entry does not publish a universal Edge-specific indicator set.
1. Record the alert and the process details
- Open Windows Security and record the detection name, time, affected file, action taken, and any available location or remediation status.
- In Task Manager, identify every process that appears to be using unusually high CPU or power. Capture the process name, process ID, user account, and start time.
- Do not rename, overwrite, or immediately delete the file before recording these details if the computer is part of an organizational investigation. Evidence can show how the process started and whether other components remain.
2. Inspect the executable rather than trusting its name
- In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. Note the complete path.
- Open the file’s Properties and inspect the publisher and digital-signature information. A name that resembles Edge does not prove that Microsoft signed the file.
- Check whether the file is the one identified by Defender. A legitimate browser process and a separately detected miner can coexist, so match the alert’s file and path instead of treating every browser process as the same object.
Do not rely on a memorized folder path as a verdict. Microsoft’s threat entry does not publish an authoritative path for an Edge-disguised variant, and browser installation locations can vary by Windows account, edition, and deployment method. Use current Microsoft documentation or your organization’s approved software inventory to validate the installation.
3. Validate publisher and signature details
In the file’s digital-signature view, check the signer, whether Windows reports the signature as valid, and whether the certificate applies to the exact file under review. A copied name, an icon, or version information can be forged; those cosmetic properties carry less weight than a valid signature that matches the expected publisher and an installation recorded in approved inventory. If the signature is missing, invalid, or inconsistent with the deployment source, preserve the details and escalate rather than trying to “fix” the file.
4. Compare with an approved installation
For a managed device, compare the path, version, and file identity with your software-distribution records or a known-clean reference from the organization. For a personal computer, use Microsoft’s current browser documentation and the installation source you trust. Do not download a replacement executable from a random mirror simply to compare files. If you need a cryptographic hash for an enterprise investigation, calculate it with an approved tool and compare it with a trusted internal reference; no universal hash for this alleged disguise is supplied by the Microsoft detection entry.

5. Examine how the process was launched
Use Task Manager’s process relationships, an approved endpoint-management console, or another trusted diagnostic tool to review the parent process and command line. A browser started by the normal desktop shortcut or an expected updater is different from one launched by a script host, an office document, a temporary directory, a scheduled task, or an unrelated service. These are investigation leads, not proof by themselves.
Look for multiple suspicious processes, repeated launches after termination, or a child process that creates persistence. The Microsoft guidance specifically calls for investigating suspicious post-exploitation behavior; stopping one visible process is not a complete investigation.
6. Check resource use and network behavior
A miner may keep CPU use elevated for long periods, but high CPU can also result from a legitimate tab, update, video call, or system task. Compare resource use with the process path, signature, parent process, and Defender result. If an unknown process maintains heavy use while the browser is closed, document it and investigate rather than guessing from the name.
Review connections using your approved firewall, endpoint, or network-monitoring tools. Microsoft’s enterprise guidance calls for blocking malicious IP addresses and URLs after they have been identified. Do not block random addresses solely because a process name looks suspicious; preserve the indicators and validate them through your security process.

A process that returns after a reboot or after you end it may have a startup mechanism. Review scheduled tasks, services, startup entries, autoruns, and relevant registry changes with tools approved for your environment. CISA’s November 21, 2022 advisory specifically recommends monitoring Windows registry changes related to security tools and startup programs in an XMRig intrusion. This supports checking those areas, but it does not identify a particular Edge path or registry value.
8. Rescan after collecting the evidence
Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan. If unwanted software persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans outside the normal Windows runtime. An offline scan is particularly useful when a process respawns during a normal session.
What to do on a personal Windows PC
Use Defender’s current remediation sequence
- Open Windows Security and check for protection updates so the security-intelligence database is current.
- Run a Full scan rather than relying only on a quick scan.
- Allow Defender to quarantine or remove confirmed threats. Record the detection name and affected location.
- If unwanted software remains, follow Microsoft Support’s instruction to perform an offline scan with Microsoft Defender Offline. Save open work first because the computer restarts.
- After the scan, install pending Windows, browser, and application updates. Download software only from trusted sources.
Microsoft Support’s consumer guidance is explicit: keep security intelligence current, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and, if unwanted software persists, “Perform an offline scan with Microsoft Defender Offline.” The same guidance advises obtaining applications from trusted sources and keeping Windows, browsers, and apps updated.

If the computer is actively communicating with an unknown service or is being used for work or sensitive accounts, disconnect it from the network temporarily while you arrange the scan and preserve the alert details. Avoid downloading an unverified “miner remover” from a search result; an additional unauthorized tool can make the situation worse.
Protect accounts after cleanup
A miner is an availability and resource problem, but its presence can also indicate that someone gained access by another route. From a known-clean device, change passwords for important accounts when compromise is plausible, enable multifactor authentication where available, and review recent sign-ins. Do not enter new credentials into a machine that is still showing suspicious activity. If the computer stores business, financial, health, or other regulated data, involve a qualified technician or incident-response provider.
Do not stop at the miner file
Removing a single executable may leave behind a scheduled task, startup entry, altered registry setting, stolen account, or another payload. Microsoft’s response guidance calls for investigating post-exploitation activity and compromised accounts. A successful scan is useful evidence, but it does not prove that earlier credential theft or access to another device did not occur.
What to do in an organization
Scope the alert and look for the Log4j connection
Start with the host, user, detection time, process path, parent process, and network indicators. Determine whether Apache or an application containing Log4j 2 was installed, exposed, or recently exploited on the affected system. The Microsoft entry associates this detection with prior exploitation of CVE-2021-44228; that association is a reason to examine Log4j exposure, not proof that every detection came through Log4j.
Check other systems for the same indicators, especially internet-facing servers and systems that share credentials or administrative access. Preserve relevant logs before they roll over, following your organization’s evidence-handling policy. Include endpoint, authentication, web-server, application, firewall, and proxy records when those sources are available to your response team.
Contain without destroying evidence
- Isolate the affected device using your endpoint or network controls when the risk of continued access outweighs the need for live investigation.
- Stop suspicious processes after recording their details and after consulting your incident-response procedure.
- Block confirmed malicious IP addresses and URLs at the appropriate control points.
- Review privileged and service accounts associated with the host. Reset, disable, or decommission compromised accounts according to your identity-response plan.
Isolation limits further mining and lateral movement, but it does not establish the entry point. Keep the investigation open until persistence, credentials, and additional payloads have been assessed. If the device is a critical server, coordinate containment with its owner so that evidence is preserved and business continuity is understood.
Check persistence and security-tool tampering
CISA’s November 21, 2022 advisory describes an organizational compromise in which XMRig was installed and recommends monitoring Windows registry changes related to security tools and startup programs. Review those areas, along with scheduled tasks, services, autoruns, and endpoint-security configuration changes, using your approved tools. Look for changes that weaken protection, add exclusions, disable logging, or launch an executable at logon. The advisory demonstrates broader intrusion context; it does not identify an Edge disguise in the incident described here.

- Monitor the rebuilt or remediated host for recurring processes, registry changes, account use, and outbound connections.
How to interpret a Defender detection
Microsoft’s statement that “Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects and removes this threat” is important, but a detection is not the same as a finding that the visible Edge browser is malicious. Defender may identify a miner file, a component dropped during exploitation, or a related artifact. Read the detection name and affected path, then correlate them with the process and host timeline.
Detection names can describe a family or behavior rather than every implementation detail. Do not infer a fixed filename, path, command line, campaign, or infection method from the word “Disguised” alone. The relevant facts are the alert metadata, the file on the affected system, and what else happened before and after the alert.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A clean scan also has limits: it tells you what the scanner found under its current definitions and access, not necessarily whether an account was stolen earlier or whether another system was compromised. In an organization, treat the alert as an incident lead and search for related activity.
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Trusting the filename: A familiar name is only a label. Verify location, publisher, signature, launch chain, and behavior.
- Deleting one file and closing the case: Persistence, credentials, and additional access may remain.
- Ignoring Log4j: When the Microsoft detection is present on a server or application host, check for Apache and Log4j exposure and patching status.
- Running only a quick scan: Microsoft Support recommends a full scan and, when unwanted software persists, an offline scan.
- Blocking or deleting without recording evidence: Preserve the alert, path, timestamps, process relationships, and network indicators before containment when your response plan permits.
- Assuming every high-CPU Edge process is a miner: Browser tabs and updates can consume resources. Confirm with Defender and executable-level checks.
- Installing an untrusted cleanup utility: A second unauthorized download can introduce another unwanted program and make the evidence harder to interpret.
- Restoring the same vulnerable service: Cleaning a host without patching exposed Apache, Log4j, Windows, or applications can leave the original route open.
What is known—and what is not—about the Edge disguise
The documented facts support a careful conclusion: XMRig can be deployed as part of a wider compromise, Microsoft Defender has a detection named Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner, and Microsoft links that detection to earlier Log4Shell exploitation. CISA separately documents an XMRig installation during a federal-network compromise.
The available official descriptions do not establish that this detection impersonated Microsoft Edge, nor do they provide a universal Edge-looking filename, path, signature, command line, campaign, prevalence figure, or success rate. Any article or alert analysis that supplies those details needs an additional, directly relevant source. Until then, verify the process on the affected machine and respond to the broader possibility of compromise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Defender detection named Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner prove that Microsoft Edge itself is infected?
No. The Microsoft entry identifies a cryptocurrency-mining payload and does not document an Edge filename, path, signature, command line, or campaign. Match the alert’s affected file and path, then verify the executable, launch chain, persistence, and behavior.
How can I tell whether msedge.exe is really Microsoft Edge?
Do not rely on the name or icon. Record the process path, inspect the publisher and digital signature, compare the file with an approved or trusted installation, review its parent process and command line, and correlate the result with Defender’s alert. No single memorized path is an authoritative test for every Windows installation.
Best Value
What should I do if my computer is secretly mining cryptocurrency?
Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if unwanted software remains. Preserve the alert details, install pending Windows and application updates, and investigate persistence or account compromise instead of deleting only one file.
Why does Microsoft mention Log4Shell in this detection?
The threat entry associates this detection with prior exploitation of CVE-2021-44228 in Apache Log4j 2. On a server or application host, check whether Apache or Log4j was installed, exposed, or patched. The association is an investigation lead, not proof that every detection used Log4j.
Should I isolate a device that shows the alert?
For an organizational device, Microsoft recommends isolating affected devices as appropriate while investigating. Record relevant evidence first when your response procedure allows, then use approved endpoint or network controls. On a personal computer, temporarily disconnecting from the network can limit unknown communications while you arrange scanning and support.
Can removing the miner executable end the incident?
Not necessarily. A miner can be accompanied by persistence, altered registry settings, compromised accounts, or other payloads. Review startup mechanisms, scheduled tasks, services, security-tool changes, credentials, and related systems, and reimage a system when its integrity cannot be established.
What did CISA document about XMRig?
In an advisory dated November 21, 2022, CISA described XMRig being installed during a compromise of a federal network and recommended monitoring Windows registry changes related to security tools and startup programs. That example shows broader intrusion risk; it does not prove an Edge disguise.
The Bottom Line
A process named like Edge is only a lead, not proof of authenticity or infection. Verify the file, signature, path, launch chain, persistence, and Defender metadata; scan with current security intelligence and use Defender Offline when needed. In organizations, investigate Log4j exposure, compromised accounts, registry and startup changes, malicious infrastructure, and the possibility of additional access.
