Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan were lower; Australia edged up, while Shanghai was closed for a national holiday. The contrast reflected different market signals, not a single proven cause: U.S. investors were focused on expected earnings growth, while oil prices, bond yields and a lack of fresh catalysts weighed on sentiment in Asia.

A separate Bloomberg market wrap, republished by SWI swissinfo.ch, said its MSCI Asia Pacific equities gauge fell 0.6% on October 7. The region was therefore mostly lower, not uniformly down.
Why did Asian stocks fall while Wall Street hit records?
Wall Street’s October 6 advance was linked in the coverage to optimism about corporate earnings, especially in technology and AI-related companies. That optimism did not guarantee gains in Asia the next session: regional indexes have different company and sector mixes, and investors were also weighing macroeconomic risks. The reports offer context and market commentary, but do not establish that any single factor caused each index’s move.

U.S. earnings optimism supported the record close
On October 6, the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to a record 7,818.93, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% to a record close of 27,599.79. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.5% to 51,521.28, according to the AP’s October 7 report. The AP said the S&P 500 had risen 23% from its late-March trough.
Investors were looking ahead to July–September results. FactSet analysts expected nearly 30% year-over-year growth in S&P 500 earnings per share, according to AP; if realized, it would be a third consecutive quarter above 25% growth. Bloomberg Intelligence separately expected roughly 25% year-over-year growth in third-quarter S&P 500 profits, in the Bloomberg wrap republished by SWI. These are different providers’ forecasts and metrics, not reported results, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

There were individual signs of strong results, but they do not show that every company was outperforming. Lamb Weston said its latest-quarter profit and revenue exceeded its own projections and analysts’ expectations; its shares rose 7.5% on October 6. Delta Air Lines was due to report third-quarter results on Friday, and several large U.S. banks were due the following week, according to AP.

AP reported that Brent crude was up 0.9% at $101.49 a barrel early on October 7, while the U.S. benchmark was up 0.9% at $90.21. AP also said Brent remained below a recent level near $110 a barrel reached a few weeks earlier. In its report of Tuesday’s move, AP said the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield eased to 5.28% from 5.31% late Monday. These are dated snapshots, not current market prices.

The later-displayed Bloomberg wrap on SWI gave different snapshots: a 10-year Treasury yield around 5.30–5.31%, up about three basis points, and WTI crude at $90.22, up 0.9%. The timing and quotes differ from AP’s figures. The reports also noted inflation concerns, bond-market pressure, the Iran war and more pessimistic U.S. consumer sentiment. Higher yields can raise borrowing costs and threaten to slow economic activity.
What market commentators said about Asia’s relative weakness
Commentators cited in the Bloomberg wrap described Asian markets as losing some of their earlier relative momentum, with elevated oil and bond yields and a shortage of fresh catalysts weighing on sentiment. Vantage Global Prime analyst Hebe Chen said higher yields can affect Asian markets through valuations, currencies, foreign capital flows and the room central banks have to ease policy. These are attributed interpretations, not a measured breakdown of what drove each market’s daily decline.

That distinction matters: the available figures show where indexes ended, while the commentary offers possible explanations. The reports do not provide a country-by-country causal analysis or prove that oil prices, yields, earnings expectations or AI-related shares alone explain the divergence.

What the divergence means for readers
- The regional headline hides variation. Four named Asian indexes fell, Australia edged higher, and Shanghai did not trade.
- A U.S. record does not predict an Asian gain. The markets differ in composition and can respond to different earnings, currency and rate concerns.
- Forecasts are not outcomes. The FactSet and Bloomberg Intelligence estimates refer to expected U.S. earnings growth, not earnings already reported.
- Market snapshots age quickly. The quoted levels, prices and yields describe the October 6–7, 2026 sessions and should not be read as current quotes.
