Japanese policy and currency concerns
Investors were anticipating an announcement about Japan’s sales tax. The reports also noted comments by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that the United States was seeking a currency-manipulation provision in future trade deals with Japan.

Saudi Arabia scrutiny, oil and SoftBank
Geopolitical scrutiny of Saudi Arabia coincided with rising oil prices. The Saudi story also mattered to sentiment around SoftBank: contemporaneous coverage pointed to the company’s financial ties to the Kingdom and Saudi Arabia’s role in its technology investment fund. That connection offers context for SoftBank’s reported decline; it does not establish a sole explanation for the share move.

Masayuki Kubota, chief strategist at Rakuten Securities, said: “We can’t say the shock is over.” His comment captured uncertainty at the time; it should be read as contemporaneous market commentary, not a forecast about markets today.
