Video game console sales are falling most clearly in recent US hardware-unit data for PlayStation and Xbox because new systems have become more expensive while the current generation is maturing. Fewer blockbuster releases and hardware bundles reduce the urgency to upgrade, and some players are staying on existing devices, moving to PC or mobile, or using cloud gaming and subscriptions instead.
That is a market explanation, not a single-cause verdict. Nintendo Switch 2 is selling strongly by several measures, and overall US spending on games, hardware and accessories is still growing. The answer depends on whether you mean unit volume or revenue, US retail or worldwide shipments, and a launch-adjusted comparison or a simple year-over-year month.

What “falling console sales” actually measures
Reports about a console downturn often combine metrics that answer different questions. A unit count records how many systems consumers bought. Dollar spending records revenue, so it can rise even when fewer consoles are sold if prices increase. Retail sell-through in the United States is also different from a manufacturer’s worldwide shipments to retailers and distributors.

| Measure | What it tells you | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware units | How many consoles were sold in the measured market and period | Does not show revenue or the effect of price increases |
| Hardware dollars | How much consumers spent on systems | Can increase while unit volume falls |
| US retail data | Consumer purchases tracked in the United States | Not a global shipment total |
| Worldwide sell-in | Company-reported shipments into global channels | Not directly comparable with US retail counts |
| Year-over-year month | Performance against the same calendar month a year earlier | Launches, promotions and inventory can distort the baseline |
| Cumulative or time-aligned sales | How a system is tracking after the same number of months on sale | Does not describe the latest month’s momentum by itself |
These distinctions explain why a 2026 headline can sound worse than the underlying market. A unit decline can coexist with higher hardware revenue, and a weak July can reflect an unusually strong July or June launch period the year before.

What the latest US numbers show
PlayStation and Xbox are down sharply in unit volume
Circana advisor Mat Piscatella reported that US year-to-date hardware unit sales through August 2026 were 25% lower for PlayStation and 33% lower for Xbox than in the same period of 2025. Piscatella described the Xbox result as the lowest tracked year-to-date level and the PlayStation result as the lowest since 2013. These are US retail comparisons, not worldwide figures and not a direct measure of each company’s global shipments.
The monthly picture was also severe. Circana reported that US video game hardware unit sales fell 39% year over year in July 2026. A single month should not be treated as the entire market’s trend, but it confirms that the weakness was not limited to one manufacturer.
Prices rose as unit sales fell
In July 2026, the average US selling price for new video game hardware increased 16% to $542, while hardware units declined 39% from July 2025. Circana linked the higher prices to the RAM and component crisis and said the resulting cost pressure significantly affected PS5 and Xbox Series selling rates.

A $542 average includes different models, bundles and promotions; it is not the advertised price of every console. The evidence supports “higher prices made purchases harder,” not “price alone caused the downturn.”
Why higher prices change console-buying decisions
The upfront bill is unusually visible
A console purchase is a large one-time expense. Buyers may also need a game, an extra controller, storage, an online subscription and a display upgrade. When the average hardware price rises, households can postpone the whole package even if they still want to play.
Existing devices become more attractive
Players who already own a previous-generation console can keep using it while waiting for a discount or a must-play release. Circana has identified cost-prohibitive hardware as a reason consumers may play on devices they already own or use cloud gaming. That behavior reduces new-console unit sales without proving that people have stopped spending on games.

Subscriptions can stretch a budget
Subscriptions offer access to a rotating catalog for a recurring fee rather than requiring several full-price purchases. Circana points to subscriptions as a value option. They can support engagement and software spending while reducing the immediate incentive to buy a new box for one or two games.
A mature generation needs a stronger reason to upgrade
PS5 and Xbox Series systems launched in 2020, so by 2026 many likely buyers already own a current-generation console. Early adopters and households replacing failed hardware have already purchased; the remaining audience is more price-sensitive and more selective. That is a normal console-cycle challenge, but it becomes more pronounced when prices rise.
Hardware generations also mature technically. Improvements in loading times, image quality and frame rates matter, yet they may not be compelling enough for an owner whose current system still runs new releases. A mature installed base can therefore produce a slower replacement market even when the platform remains healthy for developers and publishers.
Games and bundles affect when people buy
Fewer major releases remove purchase triggers
Ukie’s retrospective on the UK market attributed 2024 declines for PS5 Disc and Xbox Series consoles partly to fewer major first-party software releases and the associated hardware bundles. It also cited weaker consumer confidence during cost-of-living increases and other global economic pressures. This is a UK-specific explanation for that period, not a universal causal estimate for every country or every year.
The mechanism is straightforward: a major exclusive or an attractive game-and-console bundle can pull a purchase forward. When the release calendar is thin, a potential buyer can wait without missing much. Delayed games can create the same effect, concentrating hardware demand into fewer quarters.

Year-over-year comparisons assume the two periods had similar launches, inventory and promotions. They often do not. A console that benefited from a record launch period in the comparison year can show a dramatic percentage drop later even while its cumulative performance remains strong.

Nintendo Switch 2 is a counterexample to a universal collapse
Its cumulative pace remained ahead
Nintendo reported 23.68 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide by June 30, 2026. Circana said the system was still 11% ahead of the original Switch’s US sales pace after 14 months on the market. Those figures show strong demand for that platform and make “all consoles are falling” inaccurate.
Its July comparison was nevertheless down
Circana also reported that Switch 2 US unit sales in July 2026 were 51% below July 2025. July 2025 followed the system’s record-setting June 2025 launch period, so the comparison starts from an unusually high base. The monthly decline and the 14-month lead are not contradictory: one measures a difficult calendar-month comparison, while the other measures time-aligned cumulative performance.
Nintendo’s worldwide company-reported total and Circana’s US retail pace are different measures. Neither should be merged with PlayStation or Xbox US figures as though they were one dataset.

Players have more alternatives than a dedicated console
PC and mobile compete for play time and money
Circana identifies younger players’ movement toward PC and mobile as a market trend. Those platforms let people use hardware they may already own, and mobile games often work on a phone purchased for other reasons. A player choosing a PC upgrade, a phone game or a free-to-play title may delay a console purchase without leaving gaming.
Cloud gaming lowers the hardware requirement
Cloud services can move some processing away from the player’s device. They do not eliminate the need for a reliable connection or a compatible screen, but they can reduce the appeal of paying several hundred dollars for dedicated hardware. Circana presents this as a possible response to high prices, not as a measured percentage of the 2026 decline.
Cross-platform releases weaken exclusivity
When important games are available on several platforms, a player has less reason to own a specific console. The result is not necessarily fewer game purchases; it can be a shift in where those purchases occur. The available evidence does not quantify how much this factor contributed to the US hardware figures.

- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
The wider games market is not shrinking in the same way
Circana reported that US consumer spending on video game hardware, content and accessories reached $60.7 billion in 2025, up 1.4% from 2024. It forecast 3% growth in 2026, to $62.8 billion. That forecast is not a final result, and the total combines categories that can move in opposite directions.

Hardware unit volume can fall while software, downloadable content, subscriptions or accessories grow. A household might keep an older console, spend on games and subscriptions, and skip a new system. Consequently, “console sales are falling” does not mean the US games business as a whole is contracting.
Worldwide company figures tell a different story from US retail data
Sony reported 16.0 million PS5 hardware units sold in fiscal 2025, compared with 18.5 million in fiscal 2024, and more than 95 million cumulative worldwide PS5 units by June 30, 2026. Those are company-reported worldwide sell-in figures. They cannot be directly compared with Circana’s US retail counts, which measure a different geography, channel and reporting period.
The difference matters when interpreting a headline. A US retail decline can coexist with shipments elsewhere, inventory adjustments or a large installed base. Conversely, a lower worldwide fiscal-year shipment total does not reveal how every national retail market performed month by month.
How the causes fit together
- Higher component costs raise prices. The July 2026 average reached $542 in the United States, increasing the upfront commitment.
- A mature generation reduces replacement urgency. Existing owners can continue playing while waiting for a discount or a compelling release.
- A thinner release slate delays purchases. Without major games or bundles, there is less reason to upgrade immediately.
- Alternative platforms absorb demand. PC, mobile, cloud gaming and subscriptions offer other ways to play or spend.
- Comparison timing amplifies volatility. Launch spikes and promotions can make a later month look exceptionally weak.
These forces can reinforce one another, but current figures do not assign a precise percentage to each one. The strongest quantified signal is the combination of lower US unit sales and higher average prices; the other factors explain why consumers may be willing to wait or choose another platform.
What to watch next
- Unit sales versus dollar sales: a recovery in revenue without a recovery in units would indicate continued price or mix effects.
- Launch-adjusted performance: cumulative sales after the same number of months are more informative than a post-launch calendar month.
- Hardware prices and component costs: lower average prices could release postponed demand.
- First-party releases and bundles: a stronger software calendar can create a new upgrade trigger.
- Platform mix: PC, mobile, cloud and subscription growth may capture spending that no longer appears as console hardware units.
- Geography and channel: US retail, UK market estimates and worldwide company shipments should remain separate in every comparison.
Bottom line
Video game console sales are falling mainly because the most visible US hardware markets face a costly, mature generation with fewer immediate upgrade triggers. PlayStation and Xbox US unit sales were down substantially through August 2026, while July’s overall hardware decline coincided with a 16% increase in average selling price. But the market is not uniformly weak: Switch 2 remains ahead of the original Switch on a time-aligned basis, and total US games spending continues to grow. The accurate conclusion is a shift in hardware demand and purchase timing, not the end of the video game market.
