A used PlayStation can be listed above the price of a new one when a specific model is hard to find new and sellers price the remaining stock or pre-owned units to match that scarcity. But a high listing is not proof that used consoles generally cost more—or that anyone has paid the asking price. Compare the exact model, edition, condition, bundle, and total checkout cost against new stock that is actually available.
Why can a used PlayStation cost more than a new one?
The price gap usually makes sense only when you look at the particular console and the market around it. A buyer wants a specific model; new inventory of that model is scarce or unavailable; and some sellers ask more than the manufacturer’s recommended retail price. Pre-owned and refurbished listings can then inherit that scarcity premium.

That explains how the mismatch can happen, not how often it happens. A report from Tom’s Hardware described refurbished PS5 Pro units listed by GameStop at $1,399.99 when Sony’s US recommended retail price for the PS5 Pro was $899.99. The report also noted that new PS5 Pro units were out of stock at several retailers at the time. Those are reported listing and stock observations—not a representative set of completed sales, and not evidence that the refurbished units sold for their asking price.

Scarcity is a plausible part of the explanation for that example, but it should not be treated as a universal cause for every expensive used listing. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement attributed a global price increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”; it did not identify one specific cost as the cause. An individual seller’s price can reflect market conditions, their own pricing decision, or both.

First check whether the two prices are for the same console
A listing that says “PlayStation 5” may not be directly comparable with every other PS5 listing. A PS5 Pro is a different model from the standard PS5, and the disc and Digital Editions are distinct versions. Storage or model-group differences, region, condition, and what comes in the box can also affect what a buyer is actually comparing.
Bundles are another common source of apparent price gaps. One listing might include a controller, cables, a stand, a disc drive, or games; another might be for the console alone. A bundle is worth more to you only to the extent that you want and can use its extras. Do not count the full value of an unwanted game or accessory as a saving.
Finally, distinguish an asking price from a transaction price. A seller can list a console above the manufacturer’s recommended price without finding a buyer at that amount. The available figures do not establish how often above-new used PlayStations actually sell, so a striking listing should be read as an example—not as a normal market rate.

Sony announced on March 27, 2026 that updated prices would take effect on April 2. Its US recommended retail prices were:
| Console | US recommended retail price | Effective date |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | April 2, 2026 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | April 2, 2026 |
These are dated US recommended retail prices, not a promise that a console is in stock or can be purchased at that price today. Actual retailer availability and checkout prices can change. Sony’s announcement also listed prices for the UK, Europe, and Japan, but the US figures above should not be applied to those markets.
For a useful comparison, check what a new unit costs from a seller that has it available now, including shipping and other checkout charges. An old recommended price is a reference point, not a substitute for a live comparison. Likewise, a new listing at a high price does not automatically make a cheaper used option good value if the used console has less protection, missing parts, or uncertain condition.

“Used,” “open-box,” and “refurbished” describe different offers
Condition labels do not guarantee the same inspection, repairs, included items, warranty, or return rights. Ask what the seller means by the label and check the terms attached to that specific sale.

- Retailer-refurbished: A retailer has placed the item in a refurbished category, but the label alone does not tell you what was inspected, repaired, or replaced. Read that seller’s condition and return terms.
- Manufacturer certified-refurbished: A manufacturer program may set out its own product, inspection, and warranty terms. Those terms are specific to the program and region.
- Open-box: This generally signals that packaging has been opened, but it is not enough by itself to establish whether the console was used, tested, or covered by a particular warranty. Confirm those details with the seller.
For one specific US offer, Sony Direct’s certified-refurbished PS5 page describes an 825 GB model with a DualSense controller and a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Sony says certified-refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections. That is a description of the cited US offer, not a guarantee about every refurbished PlayStation or Sony’s terms in other countries. Check the offer’s current details before buying.
How to compare two listings before you buy
Use this sequence to decide whether a higher-priced used or refurbished listing offers anything that justifies its price.
- Match the model and edition. Compare Pro with Pro, standard with standard, and disc with disc or Digital Edition with Digital Edition. Check the region and storage or model group where those details are given.
- Identify the condition category. Establish whether the unit is new, open-box, retailer-refurbished, manufacturer-certified refurbished, or privately used. Ask what was inspected or replaced; if the seller cannot explain, do not assume the label implies a particular standard.
- List what is included. Check for controllers, cables, a stand, a disc drive, and games. Value only the extras you need, and account for the cost of replacing anything missing.
- Compare the actual total. Look at current new stock for the same model and edition, then compare the used listing’s checkout total, including shipping and any other charges shown. Do not compare a bundle’s headline price with a bare-console price without accounting for the contents.
- Read warranty and return terms. Confirm who provides the warranty, how long it lasts, what it covers, and whether the seller accepts returns. Terms vary by seller and region; do not infer them from “used” or “refurbished.”
- Assess the seller and console. Check seller history and request proof of testing. If possible, inspect the console and verify its operating and physical condition before paying.
This method is more useful than asking only whether the used price is above or below Sony’s recommended price. It compares the actual product, protections, and cost you would receive in either transaction.

Sony’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty, while its certified-refurbished products do include a warranty. The guide recommends checking the seller’s reputation, asking for video proof of testing, inspecting the console, checking that it is not reported lost or stolen, and making sure the seller has deactivated it. These are US-specific statements and recommendations; warranty rights and sale terms can differ elsewhere.

A short demonstration cannot establish every aspect of long-term reliability, but it can reveal basic problems before you pay.

- Ask for a clear video showing the console starting and operating, rather than relying only on a photo of the exterior.
- Inspect the ports and casing for visible damage, and check that the console produces a clear image.
- On a disc-capable model, verify that the drive reads a disc.
- Ask about overheating or other faults and whether anything has been repaired or replaced.
- Verify the console is not reported lost or stolen and that the seller has deactivated it.
- Agree on the price, included accessories, and return arrangements before handing over payment.
If the seller will not provide basic proof of operation or allow a reasonable inspection, factor that uncertainty into the decision rather than paying a premium as if the unit had verified condition and warranty coverage.
Does rising demand explain higher pre-owned prices?
It can contribute to competition for particular models, but one demand measure should not be mistaken for proof of a broad price trend. TechRadar reported on April 14, 2026 that UK marketplace Gumtree had seen a 93% year-on-year increase in enquiries for pre-owned consoles. That figure concerns enquiries on one marketplace in the UK, not completed transactions, all UK sales, or worldwide demand. It does not show that used PlayStations routinely sell above equivalent new ones.
Read demand signals alongside availability and the specific listing. More enquiries may mean buyers are looking, but the figure alone does not tell you how many consoles sold, what they sold for, or whether a given asking price is justified.
When does paying more for a used or refurbished console make sense?
A higher price can be rational only if the offer gives you something valuable that a currently available comparable new console does not—such as a model you cannot otherwise obtain, a useful bundle, or a clearly stated warranty and refurbishment standard. Even then, compare the full cost and terms rather than treating “refurbished” as proof of extra value.
A retailer listing above the new recommended price is not necessarily a better or safer buy simply because it is refurbished. Check the warranty provider and duration, return terms, condition notes, included accessories, and seller reputation. If a new same-model console is available at a lower total cost with stronger protections, the higher used asking price has no obvious advantage unless its bundle or another specific feature is worth the difference to you.
When there is no comparable new stock, decide whether the model’s availability is worth the premium to you. Set a maximum total price before shopping, based on the value of the console and any extras you actually want. If the listing exceeds that limit, waiting for stock or considering another edition may be preferable to treating one seller’s price as the market’s established value.
