Most blurred locations on Google Maps are not deleted. The blur usually appears in Street View imagery because Google automatically masks identifiable faces and license plates, or because someone successfully requested additional privacy protection. A home, vehicle, person or other feature can also be blurred after Google reviews a Report a problem request. Google says an applied blur is permanent.
What the blur actually covers
Street View cars photograph public roads, so a panorama can include houses, driveways, vehicles and pedestrians. Google applies privacy processing to that imagery. The blur affects the Street View panorama itself; it does not necessarily remove the address, place label, road, property outline or map coordinates from Google Maps.

That distinction explains why a building may look indistinct when you enter Street View while its map listing remains searchable. The underlying map record and the publicly visible photograph are separate elements.
The three main reasons a location is blurred
Automatic privacy masking
Google says its image-recognition systems are designed to blur identifiable faces and license plates in Street View. This processing is intended to protect the privacy and anonymity of people who happen to be captured from public roads. It can affect a face or plate even when nobody submits a complaint.

A user-requested privacy blur
Google accepts requests to blur a home, vehicle, full body, face, license plate or another identifiable feature. A requester opens the relevant Street View panorama, uses Report a problem, frames the object and selects the applicable category. Google reviews the request before applying any additional masking.
For a residential home, current instructions require proof of address. Accepted examples include a utility or bank document, lease, insurance document or property-tax record. The requester should redact names, account numbers, payment information and health information before submitting documentation.

Local legal or security restrictions
Some governments require map providers to mask military installations or other sensitive sites. These restrictions are jurisdiction-specific, not evidence of a single worldwide Google policy. For example, a 2026 decision in South Korea required Google to blur satellite and aerial imagery of military and other protected locations. A blurred base in one country therefore cannot, by itself, establish that every military base is universally hidden by Google.

How to request a blur for your home or another feature
- Open Google Maps and navigate to the property or object.
- Enter the relevant Street View panorama.
- Select Report a problem from the Street View interface.
- Adjust the image frame so the home, vehicle, person, face, license plate or other feature is clearly identified.
- Choose the matching report category and provide the requested explanation.
- If the request concerns a residence, submit proof of address with sensitive personal and financial details redacted.
- Send the report and wait for Google’s review. Approval is not automatic simply because a request was submitted.
The request concerns imagery visible in Street View. It does not automatically delete a business listing, address, road name or geographic coordinates from the map.

Why your house may be blurred even if you did not ask
Automatic masking can catch a house-adjacent face, vehicle plate or other identifiable detail without a resident contacting Google. A previous owner, tenant or another eligible person may also have filed a request. In addition, a local authority can require masking of sensitive imagery in its jurisdiction. The visible result alone does not reveal which of these triggers was used.

Google’s current Maps help guidance states that when Google receives and applies a blur request, “the blur is permanent.” Do not treat the feature as a temporary setting that can be switched off later. The permanence applies to an applied request-based blur; it is separate from automatic recognition that may vary as imagery is replaced or processed.

If you are trying to understand a blur, check whether it appears only in Street View, whether it follows a particular face or plate, and whether the surrounding map information remains intact. Those clues can distinguish ordinary privacy masking from a broader map or legal restriction, but they cannot confirm the internal reason Google used.

What a blurred image does not mean
- It does not necessarily mean the property has been removed from Google Maps.
- It does not prove that the site is a military or government facility.
- It does not show that Google hides every sensitive location worldwide under one universal rule.
- It does not guarantee that a new request will be approved.
- It does not imply that the address, coordinates or place listing have been erased.
