The screenshot alone cannot identify which cause applies: the retailer, product, discount terms, selected variant, and capture method all matter.
Start by checking which page the screenshot shows
A product detail page and a collection, search-result, or listing card may present prices differently. Shopify notes that a selected variant’s product page can show that variant’s compare-at price, while inconsistent compare-at prices among variants can prevent a collection page from presenting the product as on sale. A missing strike-through or sale label on a listing card therefore does not prove that the product detail page lacks a sale price. Shopify’s sale-pricing documentation also says that whether sale prices appear, and where they appear, depends on the store’s theme.

Check the selected variant and promotion
Confirm the size, color, or configuration
Variants can have different prices and sale states. Compare the price for the exact variant selected in the screenshot with that variant’s original or compare-at price. A product card that summarizes a product may not match the price of the specific option shown on its detail page.

A sale price configured alongside a compare-at price is different from an automatic discount, coupon, or promotion applied in the cart or checkout. Some promotions may be disclosed only after a cart action or reveal step. Check the promotion’s terms, then add the item to the cart and inspect checkout if appropriate; do not assume every advertised discount is meant to appear as a lower product-page price. See Shopify’s guidance on sale prices, WooCommerce’s coupon documentation, and Optimizely’s promotion documentation for examples of how platforms handle different price and promotion setups.

Allow dynamic prices time to load before capturing
Some pages insert or update price information dynamically. If a screenshot is taken before that content finishes loading, it may show an incomplete state. Google Merchant Center identifies dynamic price population and slow page loading as situations where crawlers can miss the final price; applying the same timing mechanism to a screenshot is an inference, not a diagnosis of any particular image. Google’s guidance is at Price mismatches.
For a manual check, reload the page, wait until the price and variant controls settle, and capture it again. If you control the capture process, wait for the price element to appear or for the page to reach an appropriate loaded state rather than relying only on a short fixed delay.

Compare the live page and listing data carefully
A price displayed on a retailer’s page can differ from the price in a product feed or shopping listing. Google documents possible mismatches when a sale starts or ends before a feed updates, when the page populates its price dynamically, or when the page loads slowly. Its Merchant Center guidance also addresses regional pricing and availability; it says landing-page prices should not be changed based on a user’s location, cookies, browser, or device. For a specific store, record the market, currency, and page state rather than assuming they explain a difference.
Google’s rules for sale-price annotations are narrower than general storefront behavior: the landing page should clearly show both original and active sale prices, with the sale price more prominent, and requirements vary by market. Even an eligible offer is not guaranteed to receive an annotation. These are Google listing rules, not universal rules for every store. See Google’s sale-price annotation requirements.

A quick diagnostic checklist
- Identify the page type. Is it a product detail page, collection page, search result, or external shopping listing?
- Record the selected variant. Note its size, color, or configuration and compare its price with its own compare-at price.
- Check the promotion terms. Determine whether the discount is a product-page sale price, a code, an automatic discount, or a cart- or checkout-stage offer.
- Wait and recapture. Let the page and price finish rendering before taking another screenshot.
- Record the context. Note the market, currency, and whether the item is before the cart, in the cart, or at checkout.
These checks narrow down plausible causes; without the retailer, product, variant, promotion, and capture details, none can be confirmed from the screenshot alone.
