What happened to oil prices?
Hindustan Times reported that on Friday, 2 October 2026, Brent futures fell 2.6% to $99.65 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures fell 4% to $89.11 per barrel. These are figures reported for that date, not live prices. What did the G7 announce?
In a joint statement published on 2 October 2026, G7 leaders said they would implement their commitments through an IEA-coordinated release of 100 million barrels, beginning immediately and running over four months. The 100 million barrels refers to the combined release, not 100 million barrels of diesel alone. The statement says the calculation includes March 2026 commitments that have already been fulfilled. It asks the IEA to monitor both immediate and full implementation.

How is the final commitment different from the earlier proposal?
Before the official statement, Hindustan Times reported an earlier proposal—attributed to an anonymous source—of 50 million barrels of diesel from EU member states and 50 million barrels of crude from IEA participants. That reported proposal is not the same as the final G7 commitment: the official statement describes a combined 100-million-barrel release and specifies early diesel front-loading without assigning the entire total to either diesel or crude.
Hindustan Times also quoted President Donald Trump’s Truth Social post: “Europe has just agreed to release a massive amount of their heavily stocked Diesel. The process will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” That is Trump’s characterization as reported by the outlet; the joint G7 statement provides the fuller terms of the commitment.

What else is included in the response to the shortage?
The G7 statement sets out measures beyond releasing stocks. Leaders said they would coordinate refinery maintenance to avoid simultaneous shutdowns and temporarily increase refinery utilization where feasible. They also said they would engage countries with significant refining capacity to encourage more refined-product production, particularly diesel. The IEA is to monitor the measures’ implementation and impacts, with a follow-up report requested before 20 days.
The statement also reaffirmed the G7 commitment to refrain from energy and energy-product export restrictions between G7 countries, and called on producers to avoid bans that could worsen market tensions. These are policy commitments and calls for action; they are separate from the stock-release volume.

Will the announcement bring down petrol or diesel prices?
The reported decline concerns oil futures, which are traded market prices. The sources do not establish that the G7 announcement will lower retail petrol or diesel prices, or by how much. A stock release and refinery measures address supply expectations and product availability; the cited reporting does not quantify their eventual effect at the pump.
