These quick comparisons help identify whether the cause is a setting or source—or something specific to the headphones—before you reset or replace anything. Controls and cleaning instructions vary by Bose model, so use the guide for your exact product.
Find out whether the problem is the source or the headphones
Check every volume control
Raise the volume gradually on the headphones if they have an independent control, on the connected phone or computer, and in the playback app. Check that playback is not paused or muted and that the intended output device is selected. On the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, swipe up on the right earcup to raise volume and swipe down to lower it; other Bose models use different controls. The 700 owner’s guide advises: “Increase the volume on the headphones, mobile device, and music app.”

Compare tracks, apps, and devices
Try a different track, another app or streaming service, and a file stored on your device. If possible, connect the headphones to a second phone or computer. Bose recommends these comparisons in its low-audio guidance for the legacy QC15 and IE2 and in its 700 troubleshooting guide. If only one recording or app is quiet, check its playback settings or recording level. If the sound is low from multiple sources, continue with the headphone and device checks below.
Turn off settings that can reduce or alter sound
Test with neutral audio settings
Temporarily set EQ to flat or off on both the connected device and in the app. Also turn off optional loudness, compression, or other sound-enhancement processing for the test. Bose’s QC45 and QuietComfort Ultra troubleshooting guidance identifies device EQ or sound processing as possible factors; the QC45 article notes, “The EQ settings of your Bluetooth device can affect sound.” Restore your preferred settings after testing.

Choose the full-range Bluetooth output on Windows
When using Bose Bluetooth headphones with Windows, select the Stereo output rather than Hands-Free when both are available. Bose’s QC45 guidance and its SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphones II guidance distinguish Stereo/A2DP from Hands-Free/HSP; Stereo is recommended for full-range listening. The exact labels and menus can differ between Windows versions and products.
Check openings, cables, and connections that apply to your model
Inspect in-ear openings carefully
On in-ear models, look for wax, dust, or other debris covering the ear tip or mesh grille. Bose identifies blocked openings as a possible cause of faint or poor sound in its IE2 and custom QC15 guidance. Clean only as directed in the manual for your exact model. Do not push tools into an opening or use liquid unless that manual expressly permits it.

For wired legacy models, check the cable path
If you have a wired model, inspect the cable for damage and test without an adapter or extension. Bose’s custom QC15 guidance also says to check the Hi/Lo switch on the audio-cable connector. These checks do not apply to wireless-only headphones unless you are using the relevant cable or accessory.

For the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, keep moisture out
Bose’s 700 owner’s guide advises wiping exterior surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and keeping moisture out of the earcups and 2.5 mm audio jack. Follow your model’s care instructions rather than assuming its openings or cushions should be cleaned or replaced to fix low volume.

Rule out Bluetooth and connection problems
Move the playback device closer to the headphones and away from obstructions or sources of interference. Bose specifies a Bluetooth range of 30 ft (9 m) for the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700; this is a model-specific operating figure, not a universal distance guarantee for all Bose products.
If several devices are paired or connected, pause audio on the others or temporarily disconnect them to simplify the test. The 700 can maintain two simultaneous connections but plays audio from only one active stream at a time. If needed, toggle Bluetooth, forget and re-pair the headphones, or clear their device list using the instructions for that model. Reset procedures differ, so do not use another Bose model’s button sequence.

Check for updates without treating them as a guaranteed fix
For a model that supports it, check Bose’s app or official computer updater for update instructions. Bose says its QuietComfort app can download updates and that the headphones should remain connected and in range during transfer; a computer updater is an alternative for supported operating systems and browsers. Updates may address minor bugs or compatibility issues, but Bose does not promise that an update will resolve low volume. Follow current instructions for your exact model rather than relying on an old version number or timing.
Use the symptom pattern to narrow down the cause
Once you have tried the relevant checks, compare what changes and what stays the same. These are practical ways to organize the troubleshooting—not a Bose-published diagnostic scoring system.

- Only one app or file is quiet: investigate its volume, EQ, processing, or recording level.
- Only one phone or computer is affected: check that device’s volume, output selection, EQ, enhancements, and Bluetooth connection.
- Bluetooth is quiet but wired audio is not: focus on Bluetooth settings, pairing, and the source’s selected output, if your model supports both connection types.
- One ear is quieter: check for a visible obstruction where applicable and compare another source; avoid inserting anything into a grille.
- Sound remains low across multiple sources and devices: keep investigating the headphones and consider support if applicable checks do not help.
When to contact Bose
If the problem persists across apps and playback devices after the checks relevant to your model, contact Bose support or an authorized service option for your product and region. Have the model name ready, along with the devices and apps tested and whether Bluetooth and wired audio behave differently. The Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 guide directs users to Bose customer service when its troubleshooting does not resolve the problem; service options can vary by location and product age.
