Usually, this is not evidence that your friend hacked you. The most common causes are a shared Google, Microsoft or social-media account; a browser profile or Chrome Sync session left on that computer; cross-device advertising and remarketing; or a shared household or workplace network. One or two similar ads can also be coincidence.
The response depends on what you are seeing. A product you recently viewed appearing once is usually advertising. An unrecognized account session, repeated exact-product ads, pop-ups outside normal websites, redirects or unfamiliar extensions require a security check.
First identify what “my ads” means
These are different situations:
- Ads for products you searched for or viewed.
- Ads inside Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, Bing or another service.
- An ad displayed while your friend is browsing ordinary websites.
- Pop-ups, fake virus warnings or new tabs that appear regardless of the website.
- The same broad campaign appearing to both of you.
Google, Microsoft, Meta, TikTok, retailers and independent ad networks do not necessarily use the same account or tracking system. The platform showing the ad determines which settings and account sessions matter.
The most likely explanations
You used the same account on that computer
If you signed in to Gmail, YouTube, a Microsoft account or a social network and left the session active, the service can use your account activity when selecting ads on that computer. A saved browser profile can preserve the session even after the browser is closed.

Chrome Sync or a browser profile remained active
Chrome Sync can connect bookmarks, history, settings, extensions and other browser data between devices. That does not prove that every item in your advertising profile or browsing history was copied, but it can expose considerably more than an isolated ad.
On the friend’s computer, open Chrome’s profile menu in the upper-right corner. If it shows your email address or says Sync is on, select the profile and turn Sync off. Check extensions, saved passwords, autofill and open tabs if you previously used that profile.
Cross-device advertising linked the two devices
Google says ads may be selected using account activity, cookies, IP address or general location, device and browser information, advertising identifiers, and activity on another device. It also says a household device may receive ads related to activity from other devices in that household (Google Ads technology).
The ad is not literally transferred from your computer. The advertising system independently chooses a similar ad for the second device after matching accounts, identifiers, household signals or context. The FTC describes this as cross-device tracking, which can use logins or inferred signals (FTC explanation of online tracking).

A shared Wi-Fi network does not normally copy your cookies to another computer or give your friend your browsing history. It is a weaker explanation for an exact product you just viewed than a shared account or active browser session, and it does not by itself prove the router was hacked.
Remarketing followed a visit
After you visit a retailer, its advertising partners may show that product on another website. A cookie normally belongs to one browser and device; delivery to your friend’s computer requires an account link, household or cross-device match, or another identifier. Without a plausible link, coincidence is more likely. Google explains remarketing and related identifiers in its advertising policy.
It is coincidence or a common campaign
Popular products, seasonal promotions and viral stories can make two people see the same campaign. One or two broad category matches are weak evidence of surveillance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck account access before changing ad settings
An unfamiliar account device is a security issue, not merely an advertising preference.
- Open Google Account → Security & sign-in → Your devices → Manage all devices.
- Look for your friend’s computer, an old browser session or a device you do not recognize.
- Select the device and choose Sign out.
- Review Recent security activity, third-party apps and services with account access.
- If the device or activity is unfamiliar, change your Google password and enable two-step verification.
Google notes that a displayed location can be approximate and that background synchronization can make an activity time appear newer than your last hands-on use (Google device sessions). Do not treat a map pin alone as proof of theft.

If you added your account to someone else’s Chrome profile, remove it from that browser and follow Google’s account-removal guidance (remove account information from another device). For future use, choose Chrome Guest mode or a private window, never save passwords or payment details, and sign out afterward.
Check Chrome Sync and local browser data
In Chrome, select the profile icon. Your email address and a Sync is on label indicate that the browser is connected to your account. Select Sync is on → Turn off; Google documents the current sign-out and Sync controls at Chrome Help.

Remove your profile from the friend’s computer if it was added accidentally. Reduce personalized advertising
Google and Chrome
- From a Google ad’s three-dot menu, open Why you’re seeing this ad and then My Ad Center, or open Google’s ad controls directly (Google My Ad Center).
- Review topics, brands and activity categories, and turn personalized ads off if you do not want account activity used for personalization.
- In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Ad privacy to review ad topics and site-suggested ads (Chrome ad privacy).
- Clear cookies and site data on computers where you used the account if you want to reduce browser-based remarketing.
Chrome says ad topics older than four weeks are automatically deleted, and site-suggested ad data older than 30 days is deleted, although a site can recreate it when you return. Turning personalization off does not remove all ads: contextual factors such as general location, browser type, search terms and the page being viewed can still influence them (Google advertising policy).
My Ad Center primarily controls Google services and may affect partner sites depending on browser, device and cookie settings. It does not control unrelated advertising companies (My Ad Center limits).

Microsoft, Edge and Windows
For Bing or Edge, check whether the same Microsoft account is signed in on both computers, review Edge profiles and Sync, and use Microsoft’s privacy controls at Microsoft third-party ad settings. Microsoft describes Edge browsing activity and personalized advertising at Microsoft Support.
Windows also has an advertising ID that apps and ad networks can use for more relevant ads. You can review it and recommendation settings using Microsoft’s current Windows guidance (Windows privacy settings). These controls reduce particular uses of data; they do not stop every form of collection or contextual personalization.

Do not dismiss the following symptoms as ordinary targeting:
- Pop-ups continue when no normal website is open.
- New tabs open by themselves or searches are redirected.
- The homepage, search engine or browser settings change without permission.
- Unfamiliar extensions or toolbars appear.
- Fake virus alerts, injected ads or unusual slowdowns occur.
- Settings repeatedly change back after you correct them.
Google lists these as common signs of unwanted software (Chrome unwanted-ads guidance).
Remove the cause safely
- Do not click fake virus warnings or download their suggested “cleaner.”
- Uninstall programs you do not recognize from the operating system.
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or trust.
- Update the operating system and browser, then run the computer’s reputable built-in security scanner.
- Reset the browser if unwanted settings remain.
- From a known-clean device, change important passwords and enable multifactor authentication if theft is possible.
- If symptoms persist, back up essential files and contact the device manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Google’s account-security sequence also recommends removing unsafe software and untrusted extensions, updating the system and using Security Checkup (Google account malware guidance).

Reset Chrome when settings will not stay fixed
- Open Chrome and select More → Settings.
- Select Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings.
This restores the default search engine, homepage, startup pages, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions and themes. Saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted (Chrome reset instructions). A reset does not remove an installed unwanted program that can change Chrome again.
Check for legitimate management
On a work, school, library or family-managed computer, policies may control extensions and browser behavior. Enter chrome://management and chrome://policy in the address bar to view management status and applied policies (Chrome management help). Do not remove authorized management from an employer- or school-owned device.
A symptom-based decision guide
| What you observe | Best first action |
|---|---|
| One or two similar ads on Google, YouTube or Gmail | Open My Ad Center, check the signed-in account and review why the ad was shown. |
| The exact products you recently viewed appear repeatedly | Check Google or Microsoft sessions, browser profiles, Sync and remarketing cookies. |
| Similar ads appear across unrelated websites | Review cross-device and household signals, extensions and site-notification permissions. |
| Pop-ups, redirects or fake alerts appear outside normal websites | Treat it as possible adware: inspect extensions and programs, scan, then reset the browser. |
| An unfamiliar device or security event appears in your account | Sign it out, change the password, enable multifactor authentication and review account access. |
What to record if you need help
- A screenshot of the ad and the website or app showing it.
- Whether the ad appeared in Google, Microsoft, Meta or another service.
- The account signed in on each device.
- The browser profile and Sync status.
- Whether it appears in a clean Guest or private window.
- Any unfamiliar device session, extension, redirect or changed setting.
This evidence distinguishes a normal recommendation from an account or browser problem without assuming that the network itself is compromised.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my friend see my searches because the same ads appeared?
Not from the ads alone. A shared account or browser profile could expose history or other data, but similar ads by themselves do not reveal your searches.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will changing the Wi-Fi network stop the ads?
It may change IP- or location-based signals, but it will not fix a shared account, synced browser, retained cookie or infected computer.
Does Incognito stop cross-device advertising?
It mainly limits local history and stored session data. Websites, ad networks, employers, schools and internet providers can still observe activity during the session.
Will an ad blocker remove malware?
No. It may hide some advertising, but it does not secure an account or remove an unwanted program. The FTC distinguishes ad blocking from malware protection (FTC guidance).
