First identify whether the issue is viewing access or live chat, then check the stream’s membership setting, the viewer’s paid membership level, and—if chat is the problem—whether they are watching on YouTube’s own page. YouTube’s published guidance does not resolve whether looping itself changes how perks appear.
First, identify which perk is missing
“Members-only” can describe two different live-stream settings. A stream can be restricted so only eligible members can watch, or it can remain public while only members are allowed to post in live chat. The first affects viewing access; the second affects chat access. Check which one the viewer expected before changing settings. YouTube’s guide to members-only live streams and its memberships setup guide describe these controls.

If the member cannot watch
- Check the video’s current visibility. Confirm whether it is public, members-only, or part of a public-to-members-only transition. The viewer may be trying to access a portion that is restricted rather than the public portion.
- Verify the viewer’s qualifying membership. The creator can make a members-only stream available to all paid members or to a selected level and above. A membership at a lower level may not qualify for a stream assigned to a higher level. Make sure the viewer is signed in to the YouTube account holding the membership.
- Check whether the video is live or archived. If the broadcast has ended, inspect the specific replay’s visibility and eligibility. YouTube says a public-to-members-only transition creates separate public and members-only portions, with separate archived videos; a channel may also post a replay after a stream ends. Do not assume the replay has the same access setting as the live portion.
These checks follow YouTube’s guidance on members-only streams and live streams and replays.
If the member can watch but cannot use chat
- Find out whether chat alone is restricted. On a public stream with members-only live chat enabled, everyone can watch, but only members can post. A public video therefore does not necessarily mean chat is open to everyone.
- Open the stream on YouTube’s watch page. YouTube states: “The Live Chat feature is only available on YouTube watch pages, not on embedded players.” An embed can explain missing chat, but this guidance does not say that an embed hides viewing perks.
- Confirm the account and level. Check that the viewer is signed into the account with the active paid membership and that the creator’s chat restriction includes that membership level.

If a different membership benefit is missing
Badges, emoji, posts, videos, Shorts, early access, recognition features, and other benefits depend on what the creator has enabled and which level includes them. Ask the creator which benefit and level they intended to offer, then check the channel’s “See perks” or membership details. The member’s paid level must qualify for that particular perk; being a channel member does not establish eligibility for every benefit.

Confirm the perk and level
In YouTube Studio, go to Earn > Memberships. Check that the intended perk is published and assigned to the level the viewer holds. YouTube says a channel can have up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level, and that higher-priced levels inherit perks from lower-priced levels. YouTube reviews levels and perks before they go live. These are configuration limits and processes, not an explanation of looping behavior. Details are in YouTube’s levels and perks guide.

Confirm the stream or chat setting
For a members-only livestream, YouTube’s documented desktop workflow sets the stream visibility to Members only and then selects all paid members or a qualifying level. For a public-to-members-only transition, the creator schedules the change in Live Control Room; YouTube describes the public and members-only portions as separate segments, with distinct archive videos. Its current guidance says transitions are not available on vertical live streams and describes the feature for desktop Live Control Room use. Consult the current setup instructions before changing a live event.
What is—and is not—known about looping
YouTube’s guidance covers membership perks, stream visibility, transitions, archives, and where live chat is available. It does not explain whether a continuously looping or prerecorded livestream changes how membership perks display. So do not attribute the problem to the loop alone: the documented settings and access checks above are the practical starting point, while a loop-specific cause remains unresolved by this guidance.

When the usual checks do not explain it
Give the creator or YouTube Support enough detail to investigate the particular account and stream. Include the channel and stream URL, the member’s level, whether the video is currently live or archived, the device and app or browser, and whether the symptom changes on YouTube’s watch page. A missing perk after these checks does not by itself establish a platform-wide bug or outage.
