The concentration around Tampa is striking, but experts have not established why Hillsborough County has so many cases or identified one cause for the outbreak.
What the 2026 Florida case numbers show
In an October 8, 2026, report, Live Science cited 497 reported dengue cases in Florida, including 252 classified as locally acquired. It reported that 223 of those local cases were in Hillsborough County, in the Tampa area. The same report counted 20 dengue-positive mosquito pools across seven counties, 19 of them in the greater Tampa area.

These are dated snapshots, not live totals. The Associated Press reported on October 2 that, as of the prior week, Florida had 252 locally acquired cases and 245 travel-associated cases. That snapshot indicates substantial local transmission alongside travel-associated infections; it does not explain why local cases were concentrated in Hillsborough County. Florida’s Department of Health had reported 59 locally acquired Hillsborough infections in a September 4 notice, an earlier count rather than a competing estimate of the later total.
The CDC cautions that current-year dengue surveillance is preliminary and can change as reports arrive. Cases are assigned to a person’s county of residence, which may not be where infection occurred, and reporting can lag. Mild infections are also more likely to go unreported, so reported cases do not capture every infection.

Why might dengue be spreading in Tampa?
The likely explanation is a combination of conditions that can reinforce one another, not a confirmed single cause. University of Florida disease ecologist Panpim Thongsripong told Live Science on October 8 that it was too early to identify the drivers definitively while scientists gathered information. She described the situation as an “unlucky” combination of factors coming together at the right time and place.
Infected travelers can introduce the virus
People infected in places where dengue circulates can bring the virus to Florida. The Associated Press cited Tulane University expert Dawn Wesson on travel from Puerto Rico and other affected regions, and on travel patterns as a possible part of the Tampa-area picture. But travel-associated cases alone do not account for local transmission: a mosquito must acquire the virus from an infected person and then transmit it to someone else.

CDC’s analysis of 2024 provides background on travel, not a breakdown of Florida’s 2026 outbreak. Published in 2026, the analysis counted 3,798 dengue cases among residents of U.S. states and the District of Columbia in 2024—359% above the 2010–2023 annual average of 828—and classified 97.2% as travel-associated. Those historical national figures should not be treated as an estimate of the causes or proportions in Florida this year.

Florida has mosquitoes that can transmit dengue
The CDC identifies Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus as the primary mosquito vectors for dengue and notes that local transmission has occurred in Florida. The concentration of locally acquired cases and positive mosquito pools reported around Tampa is evidence that local transmission is occurring. It does not, on its own, establish why transmission intensified in Hillsborough County.

Weather and water use may affect breeding conditions
Experts cited by Live Science discussed changing climate patterns as a possible background influence on where mosquitoes can survive and transmit disease. CDC’s 2024 analysis also notes that increasing temperatures may expand mosquito range and affect survival and biting. This makes climate a plausible influence, not proof that climate change caused the 2026 Tampa outbreak.
The same report described intense drought in Florida and relayed a hypothesis that more sprinkler use could leave small pools of water where Aedes mosquitoes breed. Drought does not automatically mean fewer mosquitoes: watering and water left in small containers can create breeding sites. This proposed irrigation pathway has not been measured as a cause of the outbreak.

Florida’s Department of Health warned in its September 4 notice that even a bottle cap of standing water can be enough for mosquitoes to breed. The point is practical as well as explanatory: small amounts of water around homes can matter.

The Associated Press quoted Wesson saying most Tampa-area residents do not have prior immunity to any dengue type. That is expert context, not a Florida-wide or Hillsborough-specific seroprevalence measurement in the sources cited here. Dengue has four virus types; as the AP explained, a later infection with a different type can carry a risk of severe disease.

Live Science also quoted Collier Mosquito Control District deputy executive director Keira Lucas estimating that approximately 75% of dengue infections are asymptomatic. That is her estimate, not a Florida-specific measurement. If infections cause no noticeable illness, transmission can circulate in a community without being detected promptly.

Individual precautions cannot by themselves stop a community outbreak, but they can reduce opportunities for mosquito bites and breeding. Florida’s Department of Health advises removing standing water, and the CDC discusses mosquito surveillance and vector control as part of public-health response. Experts quoted by the AP recommended EPA-registered repellents for people in outbreak areas.
- Empty, cover, or regularly refresh water-holding containers around the home, including small items where water collects.
- Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent according to its label directions.
- Follow local health department and mosquito-control guidance, which can reflect conditions in a specific neighborhood.
These steps address exposure and breeding sites; they are not treatments for dengue. For symptoms or concerns about illness, seek advice from a health professional.

The evidence supports a plausible chain: travel can introduce dengue, competent mosquitoes can transmit it locally, and local conditions may help transmission continue. The striking Tampa-area concentration and positive mosquito-pool findings document the outbreak’s geography, but they do not establish which environmental, travel, or immunity factors made the outbreak larger there. CDC’s preliminary, delayed, residence-based surveillance also means totals and geographic patterns can shift as additional information is reported.
