Apple makes iPhones through a global network of suppliers and manufacturing partners, not in one company-owned factory. Mainland China remains an iPhone assembly location because Apple’s production network there has developed over decades; suppliers elsewhere, including in India and Vietnam, are part of a broader footprint. Apple’s public disclosures do not establish what share of iPhones is assembled in each country or trace every component in a particular model to its origin.
Why does Apple manufacture iPhones in China?
The central reason is the established production network. The Associated Press reported in April 2025 that Apple began building a complex supply chain in China in the 1990s. That network includes manufacturing partners and the capabilities needed to make and assemble products at scale. Recreating it elsewhere is not a matter of moving a single factory: AP described a relocation to the United States as requiring years and billions of dollars. That is reported context, not a company-issued cost estimate or a precise accounting of Apple’s location decisions.

Apple’s business model also helps explain why manufacturing is distributed among partner companies. In its 2023 proxy statement, Apple said substantially all of its manufacturing is performed in whole or in part by outsourcing partners, located primarily in Asia. The filing names mainland China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam among those locations. Apple sets product requirements and coordinates a supply chain; it does not need to own every plant that makes a part or assembles a device.

Trade restrictions and geopolitical tensions are risks to this model, not proof that production has already moved. Apple’s 2023 proxy statement said international trade restrictions and U.S.-China tensions could materially affect its business where it has significant revenue or supply-chain operations. Tariff conditions discussed in news coverage can change, so they should be read in the context of the date reported rather than treated as a permanent description of current policy.
How the iPhone supply chain works
An iPhone’s supply chain begins well before final assembly and continues after a boxed phone leaves a factory. Apple describes the lifecycle as design and sourcing, component production, assembly, packaging and shipping, support during use, and material recovery. Its public overview says suppliers support every stage and that its supply chain includes thousands of supplier facilities in more than 60 countries.

- Design and sourcing: Apple specifies the product and sources the materials and parts needed to meet its requirements.
- Parts and components: Suppliers make individual parts and combine them into components such as displays, batteries, and chips. A component supplier’s location does not necessarily reveal where its raw materials originated.
- Assembly: Manufacturing partners combine components into finished devices. Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location, but does not publish a current country-by-country share of iPhone assembly.
- Packaging and shipping: Suppliers support packaging and the movement of products through the distribution chain.
- Support and recovery: Service providers support customers using Apple products, and recovery partners help reclaim materials from products at the end of their useful life.
Apple’s overview describes these stages, but it does not publish a complete supplier-to-part map for each iPhone model. The path is better understood as a network of connected companies and processes than as one linear chain in which every part comes from the assembly country.

Apple’s 2024 supplier list names suppliers and their primary locations where manufacturing for Apple occurs. It illustrates a footprint that includes mainland China, India, Vietnam, and other countries. For example, Pegatron lists locations in Jiangsu and Shanghai in mainland China and Tamil Nadu in India; Tata Electronics lists a location in Tamil Nadu. The list is evidence of a multinational supplier network, not a complete bill of materials for an iPhone.

| Location shown in Apple’s 2024 supplier list | Example in the list | What the entry establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Mainland China | Pegatron locations in Jiangsu and Shanghai | A primary manufacturing location for Apple work; Apple separately identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location. |
| India | Pegatron and Tata Electronics locations in Tamil Nadu | Manufacturing locations for Apple work. The list alone does not establish which iPhone model or production stage is handled at each site. |
| Vietnam and other countries | Supplier locations appear across the list | A wider manufacturing footprint, but not a country-by-country account of iPhone output or a model-specific parts map. |
Apple says the list is based on direct spend for materials, manufacturing, and assembly of Apple products worldwide. A listed site may support Apple products without making iPhone parts; the list does not show that every iPhone contains something from every listed supplier, or how many devices a given facility produces.
Why supplier location is not the same as a part’s origin
Three different locations can matter: where a supplier operates, where a material is processed, and where the raw material was mined or otherwise originated. Public supplier directories mainly help identify the first of those; they do not necessarily settle the other two.

Apple’s 2024 conflict minerals report, filed with the SEC in 2025, explains that smelters and refiners report country-of-origin information in aggregate across customers, rather than specifically for material used in Apple’s supply chain. Apple therefore says it cannot always determine the countries of origin of 3TG—tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold—in its specific parts and products. In the report, Apple identified 234 3TG smelters and refiners in its 2024 supply chain. As of December 31, 2024, it reported no reasonable basis to conclude that any of those identified facilities sourced 3TG that directly or indirectly financed or benefited armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or an adjoining country. That finding is limited to the report’s stated scope; it is not a trace of every mineral in every iPhone.
Is Apple moving iPhone production out of China?
The public evidence supports describing Apple’s footprint as distributed and diversifying, not as a completed departure from China. Apple’s current supply-chain page still identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location, and the 2024 supplier list also records locations in India, Vietnam, and elsewhere. Those sources do not provide a current model-by-model or country-by-country assembly breakdown, so they cannot support a precise claim about what percentage of iPhones is made in any one country.

Locations can also play different roles. A country may host component suppliers, final assembly, or both; a supplier-list entry alone does not identify which role applies to a particular iPhone. The available disclosures do not provide comparable country-level figures for cost, quality, labor productivity, or current iPhone output. For that reason, claims that one country has replaced another, or that production is shifting by a specific amount, require evidence beyond the public supplier locations cited here.
What Apple reports about supplier oversight and sustainability
Apple publishes supplier standards and reports on training, assessments, emissions, and material recovery. These are company-reported measures of programs and outcomes; aggregate totals do not establish that every site, product, or material flow has the same result.
- Apple reported 895 supplier-facility assessments in 2025, with more than 20% unannounced.
- Apple reported that more than 2.4 million supplier employees received workplace-rights training in 2025. Its current supply-chain page, accessed October 4, 2026, gives a cumulative figure of more than 33 million supplier employees trained on workplace rights since 2008, and more than 10 million participating in technical training, professional development, and enrichment courses since 2008.
- Apple reported that global greenhouse-gas emissions were down more than 60% compared with its 2015 baseline. It also reported that 30% of materials by weight used in Apple products came from recycled or renewable sources in 2025.
These figures add context to how Apple describes its supply-chain responsibilities, but they are not independent, site-by-site guarantees. The conflict-minerals reporting limitation is one example of why a company-wide supply-chain disclosure should not be read as a complete trace of a particular phone.
