Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When Android says an app does not allow screenshots, the app has normally marked its current window as secure with Android’s FLAG_SECURE setting. Android then excludes that window from screenshots and from non-secure displays such as casting. Your phone’s screenshot button is usually working; the app is enforcing a security policy.
What the warning means
FLAG_SECURE is an Android window flag. The platform describes it as treating window content as secure, preventing it from appearing in screenshots or being viewed on non-secure displays. The restriction applies to the protected window or activity, not necessarily to the entire application.
That is why you may be able to capture an app’s ordinary home screen but receive “This app does not allow screenshots” on a password, payment, or account screen. A different screen can use different window settings.
Why Android blocks the capture
- Credentials: password managers and login forms can contain secrets that should not be copied into a photo library.
- Financial information: banking balances, card details, transfers, and payment confirmations may be protected.
- Confidential account data: health, employment, identity, or business records can be restricted by the service owner.
- Purchase and transaction flows: an app may secure checkout screens, one-time codes, or receipts while providing a separate approved receipt or sharing function.
- DRM-sensitive media: video, images, or documents may be kept out of screenshots to honor licensing controls.
- Display protection: the same flag prevents the window from appearing on non-secure outputs such as projectors or wireless casting targets.
Is your Android phone broken?
If screenshots work in several ordinary apps and fail only in one app or on one screen, the pattern strongly indicates an app-level policy rather than a hardware failure. Restarting can rule out a temporary system glitch, but it cannot remove a deliberate secure-window flag.

If screenshots fail everywhere, test another app after restarting. Also check whether a work profile or device administrator is applying device-specific restrictions. Those controls vary by phone, organization, and Android build, so the exact menus differ.
A quick diagnostic
- Open a non-sensitive app, such as a browser page, and take a screenshot.
- Try the same gesture in the affected app’s ordinary, non-account area.
- Try the protected page again.
- Test after a restart and, if relevant, outside the managed work profile.
Success in steps one and two but failure in step three is the usual signature of FLAG_SECURE.
Can you override the restriction?
There is no universal, supported Android switch that overrides an app’s secure-window decision. Android’s security model is specifically intended to keep protected content out of screenshots and non-secure displays.
Do not rely on a third-party screenshot utility, screen recorder, mirroring app, or capture card as a guaranteed bypass. Some capture paths may show a black frame, omit the protected region, or behave differently across devices. Bypass behavior is device- and method-dependent, and attempting to defeat a service’s protection may violate its terms or expose information you are not authorized to copy.
Approved ways to save the information
Use the app’s own output path whenever possible. It is more reliable, preserves the service’s intended privacy controls, and often produces better resolution or metadata than a screenshot.

| Method | When to use it | Security and fidelity considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Export or download | The app offers a file, statement, document, or data export. | Usually the most complete option; the app can apply its own access controls and metadata. |
| Share | You need to send a receipt, image, or record to another approved destination. | Use only a trusted recipient; shared data may no longer be protected by the original app. |
| Print or save as PDF | A report or receipt supports printing. | Check the preview for redaction, page breaks, and whether sensitive fields are included. |
| Receipt or transaction history | You need proof of a payment or purchase. | Prefer the provider’s downloadable receipt or web account history over a screen image. |
| Provider support | No export, share, or print control exists. | Ask for an approved copy and explain the record you need. |
| Screenshot | The app permits it on that screen. | Fast, but may omit metadata and can place sensitive data in backups or photo sync. |
Move to a non-sensitive screen
Some apps secure only credentials or payment details. Return to a help page, public profile, or other non-sensitive view and capture that instead. Do not assume that a screenshot of surrounding content proves the protected data can be copied.
Screenshot detection is not screenshot blocking
Android 14 introduced a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. An app can receive a callback when the user takes a screenshot, which lets it warn, log out, or show a notice according to its own design.
Detection and prevention are separate. To keep an activity out of screenshots, Android still directs developers to set FLAG_SECURE on the activity window. An app may detect permitted screenshots, block protected screens, do both, or do neither.
Reliability across Android versions and devices
Secure-window behavior is not perfectly uniform across every capture path. Android’s fraud-prevention guidance notes that on Android 11 (API 30) and lower, FLAG_SECURE was able to help on around 70% of devices reliably. The same guidance cautions that the approach is not reliable against every overlay attack or screen-recording situation.
Treat the result as dependent on the Android version, manufacturer build, app implementation, and capture method. A black image, missing region, blocked cast, or successful capture on one phone does not establish what will happen on another.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“This app does not allow screenshots” appears immediately
The current activity is probably marked secure. Look for an in-app download, share, print, or receipt control instead of changing system settings.
The screenshot is black or the protected area is missing
The capture path is honoring the secure surface. Try the provider’s export function. If you are testing your own app, verify which activity sets FLAG_SECURE and remove it only from screens that do not contain protected data.

Screen recording or casting also fails
That is expected: the flag covers non-secure displays as well as screenshots. Use an approved presentation or export mode, or ask the service provider for a permitted display method.
Only a work app is affected
A work profile or device administrator may impose additional restrictions. Contact your organization’s administrator; consumer screenshot settings cannot override an enterprise policy.
Every app rejects screenshots
Restart, test a second ordinary app, and check for device-management policies. If the issue remains across unrelated apps, consult the phone manufacturer or your administrator rather than assuming the original app is responsible.

For developers: blocking versus detecting
Use FLAG_SECURE when a window must not appear in screenshots or on non-secure displays. Android 14’s detection callback is useful when you need to know that a permitted screenshot occurred, but it does not replace the secure flag. Apply the policy narrowly: protecting a password or payment activity avoids unnecessarily degrading screenshots of harmless screens.

If what you need is a screenshot of a public website rather than a protected Android app screen, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It does not bypass FLAG_SECURE or capture private app windows; it is for URLs you are authorized to fetch.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The service accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Useful capture controls
For web pages, options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selector element, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, a pre-capture click, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing an app’s cache remove the screenshot restriction?
Usually no. The restriction is a window policy set by the app at runtime, so clearing cache does not provide a supported override.
Can the app owner tell that I tried to take a blocked screenshot?
A blocked attempt and Android’s screenshot-detection callback are different mechanisms. An app can implement detection for permitted screenshots, but the warning alone does not establish what logging the app performs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a screenshot sometimes work after an app update?
The app may have changed which activity is marked secure, or your device and capture path may handle the policy differently. Check the app’s current export or sharing options rather than relying on that change.
