On a Pixel phone, automatic Night Light works only when a schedule is selected in the Night Light settings. Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light > Schedule (or Settings > Display & touch > Comfort filters on supported Pixel 10 models), then choose either a custom start and end time or Turns on from sunset to sunrise. The sunset-to-sunrise option requires Location Services; a custom schedule does not.
If Night Light still appears stuck, first check that you are changing Night Light rather than Dark theme or Bedtime mode. Then verify the selected schedule, both times, Location Services when applicable, and whether a manual toggle has overridden the automatic state.

What Night Light scheduling actually controls
Night Light is a display setting that changes the screen color during the hours you choose. Its timer is configured inside the Night Light page, not in the separate Dark theme or Bedtime mode controls. Google’s Pixel instructions document two automatic choices:
- Turns on at custom time: you enter a start time and an end time.
- Turns on from sunset to sunrise: the phone calculates local daylight times.
Leaving Schedule set to None disables automatic activation, even though Night Light can still be switched on manually from Settings or Quick Settings. In other words, seeing the Night Light color after a manual tap does not prove that an automatic schedule exists. The schedule and the current on/off state are related controls, but they are not the same control.

Night Light also is not a general “make the phone dark at night” switch. Dark theme changes the appearance of supported apps and parts of the interface, while Night Light changes the screen color. Bedtime mode belongs to Android’s Modes and Do Not Disturb controls. Each can have a different schedule, so one feature can be working while another is not.
Find the Night Light setting on your Pixel
Google has changed the menu location on different Pixel generations. The label you see depends on the model rather than on a universal Android menu.
| Pixel models | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Settings > Display & touch > Comfort filters, then Night Light |
| Pixel 9 and earlier, and Pixel 10a | Settings > Display & touch > Night Light |
These paths come from Google’s Pixel display-settings documentation. If your phone is made by another manufacturer, the names and location can differ. Use the Settings search field for Night Light, and rely on that manufacturer’s current support page for the exact path instead of assuming the Pixel layout applies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a search for “Night Light” returns nothing, try the display section and look for a similarly named blue-light, eye-comfort or screen-color feature. That name does not establish that the feature uses Google’s Pixel rules. The exact scheduling choices and location requirement must be confirmed for that phone and its Android version.
Fix the schedule in the correct order
1. Open Night Light itself
Go to the Night Light page using the path for your model. Confirm that the page contains Night Light controls and a Schedule option. Dark theme and Bedtime mode have separate pages and separate timers; changing either one will not repair a Night Light schedule.
This first check matters when the symptom is visual rather than textual. A dark interface may be caused by Dark theme, and a bedtime routine may be active without changing Night Light. Look for the Night Light control and its schedule label before changing anything else.
2. Make sure Schedule is not set to None
Tap Schedule. If None is selected, the phone has no automatic trigger. Select one of the two schedule types instead. You can still use the manual switch when no schedule is wanted, but it will not turn on or off by itself.

3. Check both custom times
For Turns on at custom time, inspect the displayed Start time and End time. Set both explicitly, including the correct hour, minute and AM/PM choice where shown. A start time without a valid end time does not define a complete daily interval.
After saving, wait for the next scheduled boundary rather than expecting the setting to change immediately unless the current time has just crossed one. For example, if the interval starts at 10 p.m., changing the setting at 3 p.m. should not be treated as a failed test merely because the screen remains unchanged at that moment. The meaningful check is whether Night Light changes when the saved start or end arrives.
When Night Light turns on but remains on, inspect the end time first. When it never turns on, inspect the start time first, then confirm that the schedule is not set to None. Checking both fields prevents an incomplete interval from being mistaken for a display fault.

For Turns on from sunset to sunrise, turn on Location Services in Android’s location settings. Google states that this schedule will not work when Location Services is off because the phone needs local sunrise and sunset timing. The requirement applies to this location-based option, not to Night Light in general.
If you do not want to provide location access, switch to a custom schedule. It follows the times you enter and avoids the sunrise/sunset calculation. You can therefore use Night Light manually or on fixed clock times without enabling Location Services solely for this feature.
After enabling Location Services, return to the Night Light page and verify that the sunset-to-sunrise option is still selected. The important combination is the correct schedule choice plus Location Services on; turning on location while leaving Schedule set to None does not create an automatic schedule.
5. Recheck after a manual toggle
A manual activation can make the screen appear to ignore the timer. In an October 25, 2023 Google Pixel Community answer, product expert Alex_V. wrote: “If you do switch it on manually it’ll override the set schedule and will show the night light all the time until the next sunrise arrives.” That is community guidance, not a universal Google promise for every Android version or manufacturer, so treat it as a possible explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you recently used the manual switch, turn Night Light off, confirm the schedule again, and let the next scheduled event occur. This gives the automatic control a chance to establish the state described by the schedule rather than testing while a manual state may still be active. Do not present the community answer as a guaranteed behavior on every Pixel release or on another brand’s phone.

Choose between the two schedules
| Schedule | How timing is determined | Location Services | Best when | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom time | Your saved start and end times | Not required | You want predictable clock times or prefer not to use location-based timing | It does not adjust automatically as daylight changes through the year |
| Sunset to sunrise | Local sunset and sunrise calculations | Required according to Google | You want the display period to follow seasonal daylight | It will not operate as documented while Location Services is off |
The practical choice is therefore between predictability and daylight awareness. A custom interval is independent of your location; the automatic daylight option is more adaptive but depends on location data.
Choose custom time when you want the same clock-based window every day, when you do not want Location Services enabled, or when you are diagnosing a problem and need a schedule with fewer dependencies. Choose sunset-to-sunrise when the display period should track changing daylight and you accept the Location Services requirement. Neither choice is inherently more correct; they solve different timing needs.
Night Light, Dark theme and Bedtime mode are different
Night Light
Night Light is the display-color feature with its own schedule. Its schedule appears inside the Night Light settings described above. Its visible effect can be present even when the rest of the interface is using the light theme.
Recommended Free Tools
Dark theme
Dark theme changes the appearance of supported apps and the Android interface. Android 13 and later can schedule Dark theme to turn on at bedtime, but that timer is not the Night Light timer. A phone can therefore have Dark theme scheduled correctly while Night Light remains unscheduled.
Conversely, a screen can have the warmer Night Light color while apps remain in a light theme. Compare the actual symptoms with the control you changed: interface colors point toward Dark theme, while the screen-color filter belongs to Night Light.
Bedtime mode
Bedtime mode is part of Android’s Modes and Do Not Disturb controls and has its own schedule and behaviors. Google explains those controls in the Android Help guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb. Adjusting Bedtime mode will not create or repair a Night Light schedule.
Why sunset-to-sunrise fails when location is off
Sunset and sunrise are not fixed clock times. They vary with geographic position and change over the year. A 2020 Google Pixel Community reply by Lilybell2 explains that manual Night Light use and a fixed time schedule do not require location, while sunrise/sunset behavior does because those times vary by where you are located. Google’s official Pixel help page independently gives the operational rule: sunset-to-sunrise scheduling will not work with Location Services disabled.

When Night Light turns on but does not turn off
Check the same controls in reverse order:
- Open the Night Light page and verify that an automatic schedule is selected rather than None.
- If the schedule is custom, confirm the saved End time, not only the start time.
- If it is sunset-to-sunrise, confirm that Location Services remains enabled.
- Consider whether Night Light was switched on manually. The community guidance quoted above describes a possible state in which manual activation keeps it on until the next sunrise.
- Make sure you are not observing Dark theme or Bedtime mode, whose schedules and visual effects are independent.
These checks distinguish a missing end time from a location dependency and from a manually forced state, which can look identical at a glance. If the end time is correct but the phone is still in the warmer display state, document which schedule is selected and whether the manual switch was recently used before consulting the manufacturer’s support channel.
Symptoms and the setting most likely to explain them
| What you observe | What to inspect first |
|---|---|
| Night Light never starts automatically | Schedule is not set to None; then check the custom start time or Location Services for sunset-to-sunrise. |
| Night Light starts at a fixed time but does not end | Custom End time, followed by a possible manual activation. |
| Dark-looking apps but no warmer screen color | Dark theme may be scheduled instead of Night Light. |
| A bedtime routine runs but Night Light does not | Bedtime mode has its own schedule; inspect Night Light separately. |
| The documented menu is missing | Identify the Pixel generation or manufacturer and search Settings for Night Light. |
This table is a way to choose the next check, not a diagnosis that applies to every Android device. The official navigation and behavior described here are Pixel-specific, and other manufacturers can use different labels or implementations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical diagnostic checklist
- Correct menu: You opened Night Light, not Dark theme or Bedtime mode.
- Correct model path: You checked Display & touch directly, or Comfort filters on the listed Pixel 10 models.
- Schedule selected: Schedule is not set to None.
- Times complete: A custom schedule has both a start and an end.
- Location available: Location Services is on when using sunset-to-sunrise.
- Manual state considered: You recently toggled Night Light manually and have rechecked its state.
- Boundary observed: You tested at the next saved start or end rather than judging the schedule immediately after editing it.
- Device scope understood: You are not applying Pixel-specific labels to a different manufacturer’s Android phone.
Work through the list in order. It starts with the control itself, then the selected mode, then the values and dependency for that mode. This prevents changing unrelated display or interruption settings and makes it clear which condition was actually corrected.
If the settings still do not match your phone
The cited procedural instructions are Pixel-specific. Android manufacturers can rename, relocate or modify display controls, and the available options can vary by Android release. Search Settings for Night Light, blue light filter or a similar display-color term, then check the phone maker’s current support documentation for that model and software version.
Do not assume that a manufacturer’s similarly named blue-light or eye-comfort feature uses Google’s exact scheduling rules. In particular, the Pixel requirement for Location Services is documented for Google’s sunset-to-sunrise Night Light option; it should not automatically be generalized to every Android implementation.
When requesting help, include the phone maker, exact model, Android version and the schedule option selected. Also state whether Location Services is on and whether Night Light was enabled manually. Those details identify whether the issue concerns a missing menu, an unset schedule, a custom-time value, a sunset dependency or a possible manual override.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Google documents the menu paths, the two schedule types and the Location Services requirement. The available support material does not provide a failure-rate statistic, a universal explanation for every device, or a guarantee that a manual toggle behaves identically on all Android versions. The manual-override behavior comes from a Pixel Community product-expert response, while the location explanation also appears in a community discussion; both should be treated as supporting guidance rather than laboratory measurements.
There is no documented need to buy hardware for this configuration issue. A screen protector, replacement display, repair tool, different phone, manual or generic accessory does not supply the missing schedule selection or the location calculation. The relevant remedy is to correct the Night Light schedule, provide location for the daylight-based option, or use a custom interval.

Fastest reliable fix
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light, or enter Comfort filters first on the specified Pixel 10 models.
- Tap Schedule and select Turns on at custom time.
- Set and save both the start and end times.
- If you prefer sunset-to-sunrise instead, select it and turn on Location Services.
- If you recently switched Night Light on manually, turn it off and recheck the selected schedule.
- Leave Dark theme and Bedtime mode unchanged unless you specifically want to change those separate features.
That sequence removes the configuration causes that can be checked without hardware: an unset schedule, an incomplete custom interval, a missing location dependency, a manual state and confusion with a different Android feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Android Night Light need Location Services turned on?
Only Google Pixel’s sunset-to-sunrise schedule requires Location Services. Manual Night Light use and a custom start/end schedule do not require it.
Why does Night Light turn on but not turn off at the scheduled time?
Check the custom End time, confirm that Schedule is not None, and consider whether Night Light was switched on manually. A Pixel Community product expert described manual activation as potentially keeping Night Light on until the next sunrise, but that is not a universal guarantee for every device.
Where is Night Light on a Pixel 10?
On Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, open Settings > Display & touch > Comfort filters, then Night Light. Pixel 10a and Pixel 9 and earlier list Night Light directly under Display & touch.
Can Dark theme or Bedtime mode schedule Night Light?
No. Dark theme and Bedtime mode have separate controls and schedules. Configure automatic Night Light inside the Night Light page.
What should I choose if I do not want to enable location?
Choose Turns on at custom time and enter both a start and an end time. That option follows your clock times instead of calculating local sunset and sunrise.
Why is the Night Light menu missing on my Android phone?
The documented paths are Pixel-specific. Search Settings for Night Light or a similar blue-light or eye-comfort feature, then consult the phone manufacturer’s current instructions for your model and Android version.

Will buying an accessory fix a Night Light scheduling problem?
No documented hardware purchase addresses this issue. The relevant fixes are selecting a schedule, completing its times, enabling Location Services for sunset-to-sunrise, or clearing a possible manual state.
The Bottom Line
On Pixel, open the Night Light page, make sure Schedule is not set to None, and set both custom times or enable Location Services for sunset-to-sunrise. If the state remains wrong, check for a recent manual toggle and make sure you are not confusing Night Light with Dark theme or Bedtime mode. Other Android brands may use different menus and rules.
