Those signals are only one part of ranking: the store also weighs query relevance, app quality, editorial value, advertising and the context of the Play surface you are using. You can broaden what appears by checking Personalization in Play and Play History, then switching from a single recommendation shelf to targeted searches, editorial collections and popularity charts.
Why does Google Play keep recommending the same games?
Repetition is usually a consequence of optimization, not evidence that the catalog contains only a few games. A personalized shelf is designed to predict what you are most likely to install or enjoy. If you have installed several similar games, searched for one genre, played a particular style repeatedly or interacted with related listings, the system has more confidence in that neighborhood of the catalog. Showing another similar title can therefore be a safer prediction than taking a chance on an unfamiliar genre.

Google says Play recommendations can use past Play activity, acquired games, app usage and information in your Google Account. The exact influence of each signal is not public, and it can change by device, surface and personal settings. A repeated game does not prove that one setting is responsible.
Personalization creates a feedback loop
Your actions supply feedback. Installing a puzzle game, opening its listing, rating it or spending time with similar apps can make related titles appear more relevant. Those recommendations create more opportunities to interact with the same category, which supplies additional confirming feedback. This loop can narrow a feed even when you would be willing to try something different.

Different Play surfaces have different jobs
“For You” recommendations, search results, Top Charts and editorial collections are not interchangeable. A personalized shelf emphasizes predicted individual interest. Search emphasizes the words and intent in your query. Top Charts primarily communicate popularity. Editorial pages are manually selected by Google Play editors and merchandisers using factors such as quality, novelty, design, usefulness and breadth of appeal. Comparing these routes is more effective than judging the whole store by one shelf.
Popularity and commercial context can overlap with relevance
Google’s discovery guidance says ranking can also account for app quality, user experience, ads and other contextual factors. A popular or promoted game may appear prominently even if it is not the best match for your next session. That does not mean every recommendation is an advertisement, only that personalization is one of several objectives.
How Google describes the recommendation system
Google DeepMind describes Google Play’s recommender as three broad model stages:

This is a high-level public explanation, not a diagnostic map of your account. It does not disclose the current production feature list, the weight of each input or why a particular game appeared on your phone. Google also says it continually tests and optimizes discovery pages, visual formats, layouts and ranking algorithms, so behavior can change without a visible settings update.
Google’s machine-learning overview distinguishes personalized homepage recommendations from related-item recommendations based on the item being viewed. It reports that 40% of app installs on Google Play come from recommendations. Google for Developers last updated that page on August 25, 2025; the figure is platform-wide, not specific to games, and is not an independent measurement of current installs.

First check Personalization in Play
Google Play provides controls for deciding how account information contributes to the Play experience. The labels can change as Google updates the app, but the documented route is:
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Personalization in Play.
- Review whether personalization is enabled and which categories of information, such as device details or acquired Play content, are included.
- Turn off the options you do not want used, or disable Play personalization if that is your preference.
These controls limit specified account-based signals; they do not create a completely context-free store. Google says device, country and installed apps may still affect what you see. A change can take up to 24 hours to appear across Play surfaces.
What changing personalization can and cannot do
- It can: remove or reduce the use of selected account information for personalization, depending on the control you change.
- It cannot: guarantee a new feed, erase acquired games or prevent all contextual tailoring.
- It may take time: Google documents a delay of up to 24 hours for some changes.
If your goal is variety rather than maximum privacy, you may prefer to keep personalization on and diversify your searches and browsing routes. If your goal is to limit account-based tailoring, adjust the controls even if the resulting catalog still reflects your region, device and installed apps.
Review and manage Play History
Play History records activity that can be used to understand your interests. The history controls let you inspect recent events, delete individual entries or clear history, and choose whether Play activity and app usage are saved.
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open the history or personalization controls shown for your account.
- Review recent Play activity and app-usage entries.
- Delete individual events or the available history range if you want to remove specific signals.
- Adjust whether future Play activity and app usage are saved.
Deleting history is not the same as uninstalling or losing a purchase. Google states that acquired apps and games remain associated with your account. Data managed by separate services, including a Play Games profile, may also remain. Clearing history therefore changes one source of personalization; it is not a universal reset button.

When a history change has not appeared
Allow the documented synchronization window of up to 24 hours, then revisit the relevant settings. Check that you changed the account used by the Play Store on the device. If recommendations remain similar, that is consistent with Google’s warning that device, country, installed apps and other signals can still influence the experience.

Use a different discovery route instead of one shelf
The fastest way to increase variety is to ask Play a more specific question. Broadly scrolling a personalized shelf gives the system little new information and keeps you inside the same predicted category.
Search by genre and mechanic
Combine a genre with a mechanic or mood: “turn-based tactics,” “cozy farming,” “deck-building roguelike,” “short puzzle sessions” or “story-driven adventure.” These are practical search strategies, not guarantees of a particular ranking. They give search more explicit intent than a generic query such as “games.”
Add constraints that matter to your situation
Include requirements such as offline, single-player, local multiplayer, controller support, low storage, under 10 minutes per session or a preferred age rating. Open several results and inspect their descriptions, screenshots, ratings and reviews rather than assuming the first result is the best fit.
Search for the opposite of your recent habits
If your shelves are dominated by competitive action games, deliberately search for simulation, narrative, puzzle or strategy terms. A single contrasting query will not rewrite your profile, but repeated, genuine exploration supplies a different kind of signal and exposes you to categories that a similarity-based shelf may not prioritize.

Use at least two routes before deciding that Play has no alternatives. For example, search for a mechanic, check an editorial collection for unfamiliar releases, then use Top Charts only to understand broad popularity.

Google’s May 21, 2026 Google I/O announcement introduced Ask Play, which Google describes as conversational search for finding the right app, and Play Shorts previews. The announcement also described expanded discovery through Gemini and additional surfaces using Engage SDK.
Availability can depend on account, country, device and rollout status. Open Play and look for the feature rather than assuming every reader has it. Ask Play may help translate a detailed request into search results; Shorts can provide a quick visual impression. Neither announcement promises that these features eliminate repeated recommendations or reveal all ranking inputs.
A practical reset-and-discovery plan
Use this sequence when the same games keep returning:

- Audit Play History: remove activity you no longer want used and decide whether future Play activity and app usage should be saved.
- Wait for synchronization: allow up to 24 hours for documented changes to propagate.
- Run targeted searches: use a genre plus a mechanic and one or two constraints.
- Browse editorial selections: look for manually curated collections rather than another personalized shelf.
- Check Top Charts separately: treat the lists as popularity indicators, not recommendations tailored to you.
- Reassess after genuine use: open, evaluate and, where appropriate, install games that actually match your interests so future signals are meaningful rather than random.
This process changes both the inputs you control and the surfaces you consult. It does not promise a permanently varied feed because Google’s models and ranking objectives remain partly undisclosed.
Privacy trade-offs when you broaden recommendations
More account and usage information can make recommendations more personally relevant, but it also means more activity contributes to profiling within Play. Limiting personalization reduces some account-based tailoring, while leaving device, country and installed-app context in place. There is no setting documented as both fully anonymous and fully personalized.
Deleting history can be appropriate when old interests no longer represent you or when you want tighter control over saved activity. Keep in mind that it does not remove acquired content and does not necessarily affect separate Play Games profile data. Choose settings based on whether your priority is relevance, variety, privacy or a combination of those goals.
What not to infer from a repetitive feed
- It does not prove your phone is defective. Repetition can arise from ranking and available signals, not hardware failure.
- It does not prove a single game is paying for every placement. Google lists multiple ranking and experience factors, including ads, but a visible recommendation alone does not reveal its cause.
- It does not prove clearing data will fix the issue. No official source establishes a guaranteed improvement from deleting Play History.
- It does not make popularity a quality verdict. Top Charts show popularity-oriented information, while editorial and personalized routes answer different questions.
- It does not reveal the complete model. The candidate-generator, reranker and multi-objective description is intentionally high level.
Frequently asked practical questions
Can I reset Google Play recommendations completely?
Google documents controls for Personalization in Play and Play History, but not a guaranteed full reset that removes every contextual signal. Device, country and installed apps may still affect the experience, and acquired content remains after history deletion.

Why do search results still resemble my usual games?

Are Top Charts better than For You?
They answer different questions. Top Charts indicate popularity; For You attempts personal relevance. Neither is universally better, so compare them with search and editorial collections.

Repetitive Android game recommendations are an expected risk of a system optimized around your established interests. Review Personalization in Play and Play History if you want to change the signals tied to your account, but do not expect a guaranteed reset. For immediate variety, describe the game you actually want with specific genre, mechanic and constraint terms, then compare search, editorial selections and popularity charts instead of treating one personalized shelf as the whole Google Play catalog.
