1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf an RCA-to-HDMI adapter shows no picture, check the conversion direction first: the unit must accept composite AV/RCA input and send HDMI output to the TV. Then confirm it has the required power, the yellow video plug is in the CVBS/video jack, the TV is set to the HDMI input you used, and the source is on and producing video. These checks address the most common breaks in the connection chain; the exact format and settings depend on your devices.
Check the signal path in this order
- Confirm the conversion direction. Read the converter’s labels or manual. It must list AV, RCA or CVBS as an input and HDMI as an output. A device labeled HDMI-to-AV converts in the opposite direction and will not turn an old composite source into an HDMI signal. A plain cable with RCA plugs on one end and HDMI on the other is not proof of active conversion; composite is analog and HDMI is digital, so this setup requires an appropriate converter. See the [AVSL product documentation](URL1), [Megasat product documentation](URL2) and [Portholic product page](URL6).
- Connect the converter’s specified power supply. Some converters use USB power; others require a specified DC supply. RCA and HDMI connections alone may not power the unit. Use the voltage and current shown on your converter’s label or in its manual rather than assuming every model uses the same supply. The [AVSL model documentation](URL1), for example, describes USB power, while [Megasat’s documentation](URL2) says its converter is powered through the playback device’s USB port.
- Match the RCA plugs to the jacks. Connect yellow to the converter’s CVBS or video input, white to L/left audio and red to R/right audio. A loose or misplaced yellow plug can mean no picture even if sound comes through. Then connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Select the TV input you actually used. Use the TV remote to choose the corresponding HDMI input, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. Confirm the source device is powered on and actively playing or outputting video; an idle source may provide no picture for the converter to display. Sony’s [analog-device troubleshooting guidance](URL5) also recommends checking the connection and selected input.
- Try another supported output mode or video standard. If your converter has a 720p/1080p switch, try the other position and allow the TV a moment to resynchronize. Check that the source’s PAL/NTSC-family format is accepted by the converter, especially with imported or region-specific equipment. Supported standards vary: [AVSL](URL1) and [Megasat](URL2) list PAL, NTSC, SECAM and related variants, but those specifications apply to their named models, not every converter.
Isolate which part is failing
If the basic checks do not restore a picture, change one part of the setup at a time. These tests can help narrow the problem, but no single test proves every component is fault-free.

- Try a different HDMI input on the TV, then select that input. If available, test with another known-working HDMI cable.
- Connect the source directly to a display with composite input, if you have one. This checks whether the source is producing video without the converter in the chain.
- Try another composite source with the converter, if available. A result can help distinguish a source problem from a converter or connection problem.
- If the TV has a compatible composite input, try it directly. Some TVs accept composite, sometimes through shared or model-specific connections; check the TV’s manual rather than assuming it does.
If the picture still does not appear, note the source model, converter make and model, TV model, power arrangement, selected HDMI input, and whether you get sound or any image. Those details are needed to check the relevant manuals and identify a model-specific fault; generic troubleshooting cannot establish that a particular converter is defective.

Why a converter can output HDMI without improving the image
The converter changes analog composite video into a digital HDMI signal; it does not create detail that was absent from the source. Some models offer HDMI output at 720p or 1080p, but that describes the output mode, not the resolution of the original composite picture. Adafruit’s [product description](URL3) cautions that scaling does not magically clean up an NTSC signal. The exact output modes and refresh rate are model-specific: AVSL and Megasat each list 720p or 1080p at 60 Hz for their documented models ([AVSL](URL1); [Megasat](URL2)).

If you need a converter, check these specifications
After ruling out setup problems, choose a powered composite AV-to-HDMI converter—not an HDMI-to-AV converter. Compare the exact model’s documentation for:
- Direction: composite RCA/CVBS input to HDMI output.
- Required power supply and whether it is included.
- Supported PAL, NTSC and SECAM variants.
- Available HDMI output modes and refresh rate.
- Whether audio is carried through HDMI or provided separately.
Check the converter’s own label and manual before using a replacement power supply. An HDMI cable is only needed if you do not already have a working one.
