The most useful first test is Microsoft’s Task Manager check: if Task Manager flickers with the desktop, a display-driver problem is more likely; if Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. Panel-specific firmware or power behavior can also be involved, so the exact laptop model matters.
Work through the checks below in order. You can usually separate an app problem from a Windows driver issue in a few minutes, then use supported display settings and the laptop maker’s own utility. Do not assume that changing refresh rate, installing a filter, or replacing the panel will fix every OLED system.

What OLED laptop flicker can mean
“Flicker” describes a visible or uncomfortable change in screen brightness, stability, or image output. On an OLED laptop, that symptom may come from different layers of the system:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Windows display-driver behavior: Microsoft says, “Screen flickering in Windows 11 is usually caused by a display driver issue or incompatible app.” The same support workflow applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- An incompatible application: A browser, game, video player, overlay, remote-desktop client, or other program can trigger flicker while the rest of Windows remains stable.
- Panel or firmware behavior: Some models have documented OLED-specific behavior when the display changes power or self-refresh state. Dell, for example, describes a case affecting the XPS 7590 and Precision 5540 OLED configurations when Panel Self-Refresh repeatedly enters and exits as content changes.
- A supported display-setting interaction: Refresh-rate options, Dynamic Refresh Rate, brightness, and manufacturer display modes can change what you see. Windows exposes only rates supported by the installed display, but Microsoft does not state that selecting a particular rate universally cures OLED luminance flicker.
These categories can look similar. A symptom that appears when you move the pointer, change a web page, connect power, or adjust brightness is a clue for diagnosis—not proof of a particular fault.

First, record the conditions that trigger it
Before changing drivers or settings, reproduce the problem deliberately and write down the conditions. Support technicians need this information to match your symptom to a model-specific advisory.
- Laptop make, exact model and screen option, if known.
- Windows edition and version.
- Whether the flicker affects the entire desktop or only one window.
- Brightness level and whether it starts immediately after a brightness change.
- Current refresh rate and whether Dynamic Refresh Rate is enabled.
- Battery or AC power, power mode, and whether the behavior changes when you connect the charger.
- The app that is open, the type of content on screen, and whether moving the pointer or scrolling triggers the effect.
- Whether the symptom appears at the sign-in screen, in BIOS/UEFI, or only after Windows loads.
Keep the notes with the laptop’s serial number and the date the problem began. A change that started immediately after a display-driver update points to a different next step than a problem present from the first day of ownership.
Use Task Manager to separate a driver problem from an app problem
This is the highest-value diagnostic step because it does not require opening the laptop or guessing at OLED technology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If it opens in the compact view, select More details.
- Leave Task Manager visible while the flicker is happening. Resize it or move it over the area where the symptom is easiest to see.
- Compare Task Manager with the rest of the desktop.
| What you observe | Most likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Task Manager flickers along with the desktop | Display-driver issue is more likely | Follow the driver update, rollback, and reinstall path below. |
| Task Manager remains steady while the rest of the screen flickers | Incompatible app is more likely | Close, update, or remove the app that triggers the effect; test with hardware acceleration or overlays disabled if that app provides those controls. |
| Flicker appears before Windows starts or in BIOS/UEFI | Windows software is less likely | Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support and service process. |
Microsoft documents this Task Manager comparison in Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows. It is a probability test, not a hardware certification: a complicated app and a driver can interact, and an intermittent panel fault may not appear during a short check.
If only one app flickers
Confirm that the app is the trigger
Close the suspected app and use Windows or another program for several minutes. Reopen the app with the same content. Test a new document or a different web page as well as the original workload. If the symptom follows one application or one type of content, record its name and version.
Update or remove the application
Install the app’s current update from its normal publisher or store. If the flicker began after an app update, use the publisher’s documented rollback or uninstall process rather than downloading an unverified older build. Reboot after uninstalling and test the desktop before reinstalling.

Check app-level graphics options
Some applications expose hardware-acceleration, overlay, HDR, or video-rendering switches. Change one option at a time, restart the app, and record the result. These controls are app-specific; do not assume that a setting with the same name behaves identically in every program.
If Task Manager stays stable but the app continues to flicker after an update or reinstall, send the publisher a reproducible description: laptop model, Windows version, display mode, brightness, refresh rate, and the exact action that starts the problem. Do not replace the OLED panel solely because one application misbehaves.
If Task Manager flickers too: work on the display driver
Identify when the driver change happened
Check Windows Update history and the laptop maker’s support utility. If the symptom began directly after a display-driver update, Microsoft says rolling back may help. If there was no recent change, an update or clean reinstall may be appropriate.
Roll back a recent driver
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the listed graphics adapter, and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if Windows makes the option available.
- Restart and repeat the same flicker test under the conditions you recorded.
The rollback button can be unavailable when Windows has no previous package to restore. Do not force-install a random driver from a third-party download site.
Update or reinstall from the correct source
For a laptop, start with the exact model’s support page. Laptop makers can customize graphics packages, firmware, panel behavior, and power management. Install the driver intended for your Windows edition and model, restart, and test before changing another variable.
If the manufacturer’s instructions call for removing and reinstalling the adapter, follow those instructions precisely. A generic graphics-driver package may work, but it can also omit laptop-specific behavior; manufacturer guidance takes priority when the two differ.

When the problem survives driver changes
If Task Manager flickers after a supported update or rollback, capture a short video and note whether the symptom appears on battery, AC power, an external monitor, and the Windows sign-in screen. Then contact the manufacturer. Persistent flicker can require model-specific firmware, a documented panel advisory, or hardware service; the Task Manager test alone cannot identify which one.
Check refresh rate without treating it as a guaranteed cure
Microsoft defines refresh rate as “the number of times per second that the image refreshes on the screen.” Windows lists the rates supported by the installed display. To review them:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Advanced display.
- Choose the internal display if more than one screen is listed.
- Open the refresh-rate menu and select only an option Windows reports as supported.
- Test the same app, brightness, and power state after each change.
Microsoft’s instructions for this page are at Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows. Some systems also show Dynamic Refresh Rate, which lets Windows vary refresh behavior when supported. A rate change can alter the appearance of motion or timing, but the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that a higher or lower rate fixes every OLED brightness flicker problem.
Watch for side effects. Windows may change resolution, disable a mode, or show a warning when a setting is not available. If the new rate makes the image worse, return to the previous supported value. Do not install an unofficial “custom” rate to test a theory.

ASUS systems with MyASUS
Some ASUS laptops provide OLED Flicker-Free Dimming in MyASUS. ASUS describes this feature and related display modes in [MyASUS] Splendid – Introduction of Four Modes and Troubleshooting for Related Display Features. Availability, name, and behavior depend on the particular system and installed software version.
Open MyASUS, look under the device’s display or Splendid controls, and use the OLED dimming option only if your model exposes it. Apply one change, restart the affected app, and test at the brightness level that previously triggered the symptom. If the control is absent, do not install a package intended for another ASUS model.

Dell XPS 7590 and Precision 5540 OLED configurations
Dell documents a specific case in which an XPS 7590 or Precision 5540 with an OLED panel may flicker or show video distortion when the displayed screen changes. The explanation involves Panel Self-Refresh repeatedly entering and exiting as content changes. Read the model-specific advisory at Flickering or Video Distortion on a Laptop with an OLED Panel and apply only the steps Dell gives for those systems.
Recommended Free Tools
This advisory should not be generalized to every OLED laptop. A different Dell model, panel option, or firmware version can have different behavior.
Legacy Lenovo references
Lenovo has a model-specific reference titled Screen flicker on ThinkPad X1 Yoga 1st and 2nd Gen. It is a legacy reference for selected ThinkPad X1 Yoga generations, not evidence that all Lenovo OLED or LCD laptops share one fault. Use it only when the documented model and symptom match your machine.
Brightness, power, and content tests that add useful evidence
These tests do not prove a cause, but they make a support case more precise:
- Brightness sweep: At a fixed app and refresh rate, test several brightness levels. Record the exact range in which flicker appears. Avoid concluding that every brightness-related symptom is caused by one universal OLED dimming method.
- Power comparison: Repeat the test on battery and AC power with the same Windows power mode. A difference points support toward power-management or firmware behavior, not automatically toward a defective panel.
- Content comparison: Compare a static desktop, scrolling text, video, and a rapidly changing window. If only one content type triggers the effect, include that detail in the manufacturer report.
- External-monitor comparison: If available, connect a monitor and observe whether it flickers. A stable external screen does not clear the laptop panel, but it helps distinguish an internal display path from a broader graphics problem.
- Screenshot versus camera video: A normal screenshot can miss temporal changes. A phone recording, with the recording conditions noted, may show the timing to support staff; it is evidence of the symptom, not a measurement of flicker frequency.
When to stop experimenting and seek service
Contact the laptop maker when the flicker is persistent, worsening, visible outside Windows, accompanied by colored lines or distortion, or still present after the supported driver and setting checks. Provide:

- Brightness, refresh rate, Dynamic Refresh Rate status, power state, and triggering content.
- A short recording and the steps that reproduce the issue.
Ask support whether your exact model has a firmware update, panel advisory, or diagnostic procedure. Do not presume that the panel must be replaced. A service decision depends on the model, warranty, symptom reproduction, and the manufacturer’s diagnosis.
Quick Recap
Approaches that are not established fixes
- Blue-light glasses: No cited official source establishes that glasses stop temporal display flicker.
- Screen filters or generic accessories: The available guidance does not show that a physical filter cures the underlying timing or driver behavior.
- Forcing an unsupported refresh rate: Windows documents supported-rate selection, not a universal flicker cure from custom values.
- Copying another model’s workaround: Dell’s Panel Self-Refresh case and Lenovo’s legacy reference are model-specific. Applying their settings to an unrelated laptop can create new problems.
- Immediate panel replacement: Driver and app causes should be separated first, and a manufacturer should diagnose hardware before replacement.
A practical decision path
- Reproduce the symptom and record model, Windows version, brightness, refresh rate, power state, and triggering content.
- Open Task Manager during the flicker.
- If Task Manager stays steady, isolate, update, or remove the triggering app.
- If Task Manager flickers too, use the driver path: identify the timing, roll back a recent update when appropriate, or install the exact model’s supported driver.
- Review Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and test only supported refresh rates; treat the result as diagnostic, not guaranteed.
- Check the manufacturer utility and support page for your exact model, including OLED-specific controls or advisories.
- Escalate with reproducible evidence when the symptom persists, appears before Windows, or includes distortion.
